Raw Milk Raid in Venice: Three Arrested For Alleged Unpermitted Sales of Unpasteurized Dairy

Don't do it.
Another day another raid in Venice. But this one didn't involve marijuana shops or pot docs or even RV dwellers.

No, this time the targets were purveyors of fine, raw milk, a product you can't really sell legally without special permits. Those, authorities say, were not in-hand when they raided these particular suspects today.

And so agents from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the California Franchise Tax Board, the California Department of Food and Agriculture and all kinds of police descended on the Venice shop Rawesome to make arrests (video via Venice311).

Suspects include, according to a District Attorney's statement:

-Sharon Ann Palmer, 51
-James Cecil Stewart, 64
-And Eugenie Victoria Bloch, 58.

According to the D.A.'s office the three ...

... were charged in a 13-count complaint ... Palmer owns Healthy Family Farms, LLC, in Santa Paula, which prosecutors allege has operated without any type of license or permit for milk production since 2007. The business Healthy Family Farms and Palmer are charged in nine of the 13 counts. Bloch works for Palmer and is charged in three conspiracy counts.

Stewart runs the Venice market Rawesome, which has been in operation for more than six years but has never had any type of business permit or license, prosecutors allege. Stewart is facing 13 counts.

The arrests were part of a year-long investigation of this alleged raw-milk underground that targeted unpasteurized diary products that also included goat milk, yogurt and kefir.

Prosecutors say that customers paid fees or a $50 membership to get acces to the goods. In case, they said, goat milk was sold out of a van in the back of Health Family Farms.

We hear that feds are targeting illicit cookies next week.

And, BTW, LA Weekly was at the raid. Stay tuned to our sister blog Squid Ink for all the backstory, details and photos you'll ever need to read when it comes to the raw-milk underground.

And remember kids, if some shady character on the boardwalk gives the "pssst" and offers you the white stuff, just say no.

The real criminals are the FDA thugs and their degenerate, slim-bag cohorts.  I say jail time for FDA thugs.

A SWAT type raid for selling raw milk??? REALLY???

Amendment 5 - Trial and Punishment, Compensation for Takings. ...nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law...

If you do not exercise your rights you will lose them.

Our founding fathers drank whole raw milk. Why can't you choose to do the same? It was their right. When did your right to do likewise vanish?

Because elections have consequences, and people have been electing statists for a long time.

Americans have become terrified of freedom, because it also means you're responsible for the consequences of your own actions. True freedom means that someone who is lazy and lays around instead of working would starve, because government would not be stealing from those who work to give to them....and the recipient class, now 48% of the population, has discovered they can vote themselves other people's money.

year long investigation over milk?! Talk about a giant waste of taxpayer money.

With unpasteurized milk being so dangerous and all, why isn't the government arresting breastfeeding mothers?  Child abuse is an ugly thing.

We live in a police state.  The Congress has let us down.  The bureaucrats are running the show.  I say jail time for FDA thugs.

The real story is all those agencies have been obsessed with charging them for something for YEARS.  By the way it was a private membership, not a retail store. THE REAL STORY is the hundreds of thousands of $ spent and years to get them for selling..... raw dairy..  sigh.

They were set up as a private buying club and did not sell to the public. Why shouldn't people be able to join together to contract with farmers to raise for them the kind of foods they wan tho eat?

Forming a private buying club exempts you from regulation? Wow, I didn't know that!

I think the problem here is that due to regulation (which I am a fan of, btw) , it is difficult to secure the permits needed to sell the product- and as people are becoming more food-aware, the demand is rising. I feel for these farmers, who likely started because they had a need of their own to know where their food comes from, and to have whole healthy food at their disposal. I'm sad that a state that claims to have such budget woes saw fit to spend so much to bust farmers so harshly. I think that money would have been better spent maybe having an inspector come out and assist the farmers in getting the necessary paperwork in order....

It sounds like this "raid" was excessive, and maybe some rights were violated, but of course I don't know the details and can't say for sure. But would you suggest we don't enforce our laws? You can't sell foods just however you want. We have the FDA for a reason. And you can't operate a business without a license. Go through the proper channels and follow the rules. This isn't some conspiracy to keep "wholesome food" out of people's hands. It's a couple of "entrepreneurs" who think the rules don't apply to them.

WAY too much government.  WAY too much opportunity for abuse, as in this case.  A big company sickens thousands, and no one goes to jail.

I say jail time for FDA thugs.

So for a minor infraction, you're okay with shouting roid-rage adrenaline-junkie sorts coming in with loaded guns pointed at you, at customers, even at children?

Funny how the same people who are okay with that scream about rights violations every time they round up illegals in a peaceful manner...

Right...then let the migrant workers shit on the spinach, import Chinese food with plastic chemicals in it, eat all the pesticides from Chili, Peru, and the rest of South America, and we can all run around with the squirts and growing tumors. The cream rises to the top for a reason, City Folk? Although, I do agree with the Lic. part. Don't cheat The Man...we got wars to finance. Fix-- just sign a liability waiver and drink the crap...before the ATF exports it to the Mexican drug cartels. Six years!!!

The FDA is really the problem here. If they were really looking out for our safety that would be one thing, but more often then not they are only out to protect the profits of big corporations.

Exactly, MikeJones. This is indeed a conspiracy to keep "wholesome food" out of people's hands. And it has been a conspiracy since pasteurization was instituted to take dairy distribution away from independent farmers.
