Update: A campus police official tells the Weekly, "All clear -- we are off lock-down." Also, at bottom, how a frightened young woman set the whole thing off. First posted at 12:07 p.m.

Santa Monica College was on lock-down early this afternoon after there was a report of a gunman on campus, police said.

The college on Pico Boulevard was locked down about 11:30 a.m., police told CIty News Service.

The Los Angeles Times reported there was a possible report of a shooting.

The campus is across from Santa Monica's roughest neighborhood, the Pico community, where there have been gang clashes in the past.

A source who works at KCRW (89.9 FM), which is based on campus, told the Weekly employees there were told they couldn't leave. Likewise for volunteers who had gathered to help out with the public station's summer pledge drive.

We'll keep an eye on it.

Update: An email circulated to KCRW staffers and obtained by the Weekly indicates that a young woman who thought she heard shots set off the scare:

At app. 11:07, a young woman heard what she thought was shots fired and glass breaking. She called her mom in Riverside and mom called 911. The entire Santa Monica police department and SMC police responded. A campus search found nothing. "At this time, no evidence a shooting occurred."
