'Stop SB 48' Doesn't Want California Students to Know About Gore Vidal?

GoreVidal.jpg
Gore Vidal
In the history of the world, gays and lesbians have always made important contributions to many different societies. One such person is Gore Vidal, writer and political activist who has written books, screenplays, and provocative essays that have challenged the status quo of American society and culture.

"Vidal is the best all-round American man of letters since Edmund Wilson," a Newsweek critic once raved.

In California, a group called "Stop SB 48" wants to repeal a state law that allows students to learn about Vidal and other important people in history who were gay.

In addition to writing plays and movies such as Is Paris Burning? and Suddenly, Last Summer, Vidal wrote one of the first modern-era novels that openly examines homosexuality: 1948's The City and The Pillar.

The book caused an uproar in the United States, but paved the way for more American writers -- especially gay authors -- to honestly and truthfully explore human sexuality.

"A brilliant expose of subterranean life," a critic for The Atlantic magazine wrote.

"An artistic achievement," a Washington Post critic stated.

Vidal went on to write many other novels as well as essays about American politics and society. In 1993, Vidal won the National Book Award for United States: Essays, 1952-1992.

"That massive volume unearthed a whole continent of brilliant writing about literature and politics," Jay Parini for PBS's American Masters series writes. "Over a hundred essays were gathered there, showcasing Vidal as a shrewd, uncompromising observer of American political history, cultural history, and world culture."

In July, Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 48, also known as the Fair, Accurate, Inclusive, and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act, into law.

It revised an existing law that adds the LGBT community to a list of under-represented cultural and ethnic groups that are covered in textbooks and other instructional materials in schools.

Stop SB 48 wants to repeal FAIR through a ballot measure, and the group has now started a petition drive to get the initiative on the June, 2012, ballot.

In seeking the repeal of FAIR, Stop SB 48 is creating the same kind of coalition of religious groups and conservative think tanks that worked to get California voters to approve anti-gay marriage Proposition 8 in 2008.

Courage Campaign, Equality California, and other gay rights and social justice groups are undertaking a "decline to sign" effort to keep California voters from signing Stop SB 48's petition.

"They want kids to grow up thinking gay people have never contributed to society at all," Courage Campaign founder Rick Jacobs wrote in an email to his members.

Every Wednesday, L.A. Weekly is highlighting those important gays and lesbians in history -- the same people Stop SB 48 doesn't want California students to know about.

I think you got all wrong. I don't mind recognizing people for the things they do,  but why my children should recognize their sexuallity preference. They are child molester and perverts that have done things for society, so should we recognized their twisted mind too?

We aren't "ignorant" nor are we "bigoted" because we choose not to agree with your disgusting lifestyle. I really don't understand why Gays get so mad when good natured Americans decide to remind you just how much we really hate what you're doing and how much you disgust your parents. Yes I said it. Because your mother and father don't have the guts to tell you themselves, let me remind you just how much you disgust them. For you Gay guys, your fathers will go to the grave regretting the very day you were born.  Do you really think those around you like you? Do you really think we feel that you’re cool or trendy because you like sleeping with other men? Oh I forgot…it’s not really about that is it? Of course it is. You’re kidding yourself. We interact with you everyday because we have no choice. Like your mothers and fathers, we hate every strand of DNA in your body and hope like hell our children don’t turn out like you. Now, despite how much I hate the very air you breathe, you win. You have infected, I mean infiltrated, the educational system, legislature, even law enforcement and the military. However, like your mother and fathers, we will always hate you and what you've done to this country. There now. That wasn't so bad was it? Now go away and find a closet to crawl back into until Aids finally does to you what we ignorant and bigoted folks pray for.

If straight people have such a problem with homosexuals then they should stop having gay babies

I'm sure your comment must mean something....right? Let's see, oh yeah, gays stopped trying to convince intelligent people they were born this way when it was proven scientifically many times again it wasn't true. It is nothing more than a repulsive lifestyle. You're not born with the idea of injecting yourself with female hormones, having someone cut off your penis, and trying to convince others that you're a female when you're clearly not. You're nothing more than a freak that cut off his penis. You deserve nothing more than one who cuts off his arm or foot. We would consider this person mentally ill. Look folks, you don’t need permission to admit to yourself you made a mistake choosing this lifestyle and/or supporting it. You don't have to support Gays because they tell you to. I'm not saying you need to be as vocal as I am either. All I’m saying is…parents raised little boys to play baseball and date girls. Someone else, who doesn't know or love you, convinced you of something else....something despicable.

No what he was saying is is that a gay couple can't naturally have children only there straight stubborn unsupporting parents can. So it's a play on words, the bigots who hate gays are themselves, the only ones creating them...

I have no problem with text books including the contributions of homosexuals if the information given deals with the contribution itself and NOT with the sexual 'orientation' of the contributor.  If, as the LGBT lobby claims, their orientation is something over which they have no control, the fact that the contributor is LGBT is of no importance - it is the value of the contribution that should be celebrated. Michelangelo's magnificent work would be no less magnificent had he been a heterosexual, and George Washington's greatness would not be diminished if he had been a gay man. Both historical figures are great because of their work, not because of the sexual orientation. Stick to the accomplishments and how they made society better.  There is no reason to even explore the sex lives of our historic figures.

Interesting, all of the comments I've read about this issue ignore the question on the table: Should public Kindergarten through 12th grade classrooms delve into the sexual preferences of people when presenting history? Or, more accurately, should teachers be required to make sure they check the sexual preference of the historical figures they teach about and make sure there are enough gays, lesbians, and transgender folks included in the lesson plan?

Keep in mind also, that the law requires that the curriculum present LGBT folks in a positive light, regardless of the values of the teachers, parents, or the students. There are some pretty negative heterosexual figures in history, and some pretty negative gay folks. This law, as written, would make it illegal to teach about Jeffrey Dahmer, for instance. There is supposed to be an "age appropriate" way to present this content to kindergarten kids as well.

Regardless of your views on sexuality, is this the right mandate for public education? Read SB 48 and tell me... what do you think of the law itself?

Children today are required to learn and memorize so much already, is forcing our children to learn about the "glories of the gays" course actually necessary???  Getting into the sexual preference of people while talking about history is most definitely unnecessary and will only cause destruction for the next generations.  Lets force a class on world religions before "best gay people in history" class

Moments like this make me proud to be a Californian, and proud to have Jerry Brown as my Governor.  Here's to common sense prevailing.

If you bothered to even google the topic about homosexual behaviour in animals before you decided to write an incorrect statement about "what's natural"- you would've found plenty of links to research on the topic. There are many recorded cases of it with pretty much every animal that engages in sexual behavior. This includes apes, giraffes, penguins, etc. These hateful, ignorant and plain wrong assumptions about this group of people aren't just a result of a lack of education, these people just don't want to be educated. They are also anti- education and they have no place in the debate over what important academic topics need to be covered. Stick to topics you know like cheap beer, trailer parks, guns and mullets. (no offense to intelligent folks with these interests of course).

LOL! after that long detailed response by Geenie he says "bla bla bla"?? Great argument idiot. I support a well rounded education and I like this bill. Censorship is just wrong. Plain & simple.

Yeah, you're a good judge of what's "normal"... I'm surprised you spelled that word rite, you butchered every other word. I don't agree with you, so you're wrong again amigo. Idiot.

This law is vital. Kudos to Gerry Brown and to L.A weekly for doing this feature. Some of the ignorant and hateful comments demonstrate exactly why a well rounded education is very important and religion has little to do with it. If more people understood how complex and varied sexuality was amongst all species, such bigotry would be far more rare than it is.

I'm no legislative expert, but if a law is titled "Fair, Accurate, Inclusive, and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act", shouldn't it try to be "inclusive" instead of "exclusive"?

The irony here is that Vidal has famously said, "There are no homosexual people, only homosexual acts."  His point is, we shouldn't be classifying or typifying people as homosexual at all, just based on the kind of sex they prefer on a given day.  Sorry, Patrick, but I don't think including Vidal here helps your point along.

"on a given day"? Like some days I like cereal and some days I like eggs. Wow, ignorance is alive and well!

Homosexuality is unnatural, unhealthy, and self destructive behavior...like drug abuse, alcoholism, adulterous behavior. Most people see this and that is why most people do not want there 1st grader being taught that it should be acceptable.

We need to stop these sick people. I am getting sick and tired of these homes and les trying to shove there agenda down our throat. We should send these people to an island so they can live within themselves and not bother other people.

Geenie-California

Who's bothering you? Do you have gay boy or gay girl scouts knocking on your door every day trying to recruit you? I think the agenda being shoved onto others is that of the ignorant and bigotted ... And your case probably the deeply closeted and self loathing homo. It's funny because the most hateful, the most homophobic are usually those who can't handle it themselves. It's time YOU AND YOUR BIGOTTED KIND MOVED TO AN ISLAND JERK!
