Chris Jeon, Insane UCLA Student, Joins Qaddafi Rebels in Libya for 'Real Revolution'

Categories: Crazytown

Chris Jeon just upgraded from Coachella to Libya.
Updated at the bottom: We speak with a worried friend of Jeon's from UCLA, who says Jeon is a "thrill-seeker" trying to "test himself."

Originally posted September 1 at 11:05 a.m.

Sorry, Westwood: The raddest, most absurdly wired math major ever to grace your homogenous hell of a dorm-tropolis has officially left the building.

UCLA student Chris Jeon bought a one-way ticket to Cairo two weeks ago, telling his parents he was going on a tame little vaycay. Then -- like a man on a motherfucking mission -- Jeon made his way to the heart of foreign unrest: He's currently in a town called An Nawfaliyah, on the road to Tripoli.

Apparently the UC Regents budget-cut walkouts weren't cutting it for Jeon, on the rebellion meter:

"It is the end of my summer vacation, so I thought it would be cool to join the rebels," he told an Australian reporter from The National, clearly floored to find an Asian-American dude in an L.A. basketball jersey out in the middle of the desert. "This is one of the only real revolutions."

fo02se-LibyaRoadTrip.jpg
The National
His story only gets zanier from there. Jeon makes civilian Osama-hunting look like child's play:

"How do you fire this thing?" he asked on Wednesday as a bearded rebel handed him an AK-47. Locating the trigger of the assault rifle and switching off the safety, Mr Jeon fired it in the air in two short bursts.

"I want to fight in Sirte!" he proclaimed, using hand gestures and pointing west towards Sirte. Whether the rebels understood him was far from clear. "It's hard to communicate. I don't really speak any Arabic," he said.

The Arab Spring rebels with whom Jeon is running have nicknamed him Ahmed El Maghrabi Saidi Barga, awesomely. The name also serves as something of an awkward-silence breaker, reports the paper: "When communication invariably reaches an impasse, he merely repeats his name and the rebels erupt in raucous cheers."

Oh, and here's the reason Jeon didn't buy a return ticket (though he does still plan to graduate in May, being the shruggishly optimistic dude he is): "If I get captured or something, I don't want to waste another $800."

How did this human come into existence? And in a place like Cypress, California, no less. His Facebook profile makes him look surprisingly normal; he's in groups like "I <3 Cali" and "Texts From Last Night-UCLA."

But don't be fooled by these inane attempts at status-quo! And please, readers: If you have the honor of knowing Chris Jeon, or even knowing someone who knows Chris Jeon, contact us immediately. We need to find this kid. And marry him. After a supreme talking-to.

Best quote for last: "Whatever you do, don't tell my parents," Jeon told the paper. "They don't know I'm here."

Uh, yeah. About that. We can more or less guarantee your parents are in the throes of a collective Earth-shaking heart attack right now, unable to rip their eyes from some Australian reporter's photo of their precious little math star with an AK-47 and a rebel's headscarf, wondering where their good Asian parenting went wrong. (On the contrary, we'd like to reassure them: This might be one of those situations that's so wrong it's right.)

Really though -- come home safe, Chris. We know UCLA is going to seem stupid boring after your X-treme crusade to free the Libyans from oppression, but at least you won't get shot here, or blown up by terrorists, or turned to stone by Qaddafi's mere gaze. It's only a cool story if you live to tell about it.

Update: Peter Duan, who calls himself a "close friend" of our Libyan adventurist, says he tried to talk Jeon out of the trip, to no avail.

"He does whatever he wants," says Duan. When he originally asked his friend why he was choosing the most dangerous destination possible, he says Jeon replied, "to see if I have it in myself."

Duan explains: "I've known Chris for a while. What I gathered when I first met him is that he's a different type of guy. ... He loves going into nature. He went to the Amazon by himself. But more and more, he's becoming a thrill seeker. I love him to death, but he does plenty of stupid shit. ... I'm very glad that he's still alive."

Though Jeon told his friend that he was taking the trip to "see a revolution from the ground up," Duan is worried that he may be in over his head -- traversing a political and religious world with which he has no familiarity or ties.

"I definitely think he would shoot somebody," says Duan. "He told me, 'If a rebel's running at me with a gun, I won't hesitate to shoot his head off.'"

We ask Duan whether Jeon tried to gather any fellow travelers before taking off for Cairo.

"No," he says. "Nobody's crazy enough to go with him. He knows that."

Wow - At last somebody as cool as the 60s kids!  I completely admire this dude.  Imagine actually going somewhere and not just having a cyber-adventure.  It is great to think that there will be one person in America who actually knows what he is talking about when he starts blowing off about other cultures.  My total hero.

adventurous, maybe? certainly ignorant.

the rebels are thugs. they are not bringing, giving freedom but servility.

but he is a college student so ignorance is automatic.

This guys ego is what has fueled his ambition to act like he's there to help Libya. He is just one more idiot looking for attention and recognition for himself. The Libyans are in a true crisis and don't need some dipshit hanging out for a photo shoot for his Facebook buddies. If he wants to help humanity he could have took the $800 and went and help the homeless on skid-row. But that would go unnoticed.

If he actually sympathised with the rebels' cause, I could see why he went there to join the fight. There have been thrill-seekers like this guy throughout history.

But when I read this quote...:'If a rebel's running at me with a gun, I won't hesitate to shoot his head off.'...all I can say is I hope the rebels kick his spoilt ignorant ass out of the revolution which is theirs to begin with. He's got nothing to do there.

Someone should give him a serious smacking when he comes back.

I'm not sure why so much negative sentiment is being thrown in Mr. Jeon's direction here on laweekly.  Some of us like to read about revolutions and others want to jump headfirst into the fray.  Are his actions fraught with peril?  Yes, of course!  No one understood that more than Chris Jeon.

Mr. Jeon may not have done himself any favors by saying he was going on a "sick vacay", but who doesn't do a bit of posturing when with close friends.  In my eyes, revolutions are "cool" and if we didn't have our own we'd all still be subjects of the Queen.  We've all read about revolutions in our history textbooks, what's so wrong with seeing and experiencing one up close and personal.

Is he out of place and awkward in action and appearance?  Sure, especially to us weak-willed, internet commenting, critics who haven't taken any action for any cause however small.  I would leave it to the irregular rebel fighters he's with to make the decision about when to leave.  If he's hurting the cause in any way, they will surely put him on the first transport back to comfortable suburbia.  Meanwhile none of us have left our own comfortable computer screens.  All I can say is that his actions have done more for the cause of the Libyan people than all of this internet drivel... including my own.

What more can you expect from a person of his caste? I may not be a total moron nor am i  trying to join or hang out with a rag tag rebel group attempting to overthrow a 42 year old rouge government but I can say wholeheartedly some of us are doing a lot more then this!

So a cute Azn boy goes to LibyaA respite from lame academiaBut once he gets thereRebels grasp his dierrereAnd pump it up full of chlamydia.

Idiot

I can't believe how many people support this guy, and justify it by either saying:

1.)  Who cares what he does, whom does it hurt?2.) He's doing something for the cause of Libya's liberation?

As to whom it hurts, how about the actual people fighting in Libya trying to get freedom.  The people who are actually putting their lives on the line to win freedom from a tyrant who has oppressed them for years(by the way, with US backing, either through active or passive complicity).  These people are experiencing food and water shortages, learning how to fight while people around them dying.  A good portion of them are guys who run video stores, bakers, butchers...the people we have in the US and go to everyday or our neighbors.  Who does he hurt, the very honor of the people who are putting their lives on the line, so we can have a "sick vacay" while shooting off their ammunition and eating their food.

Regarding his fighting for liberation AND how people(commentators on this board, myself included) are not doing the stupid ass shit he is doing to "support the cause of Libyan independence," are you all morons?  Having read the article and his comments on his reasons for going, do you think that he is actually there to support Libyan independence.  HELL NO.  He's  self-serving ego-centric douche who needs people's attention to feel he matters....which is sad since I am writing this, I am giving him what he wants.

In summary, if you support this douchebags "mission," to help Libyans, you are either a moron or a douchebag like him.  If you see this for what it is, fame-mongering, you are probably going to be as disgusted with him as I am with people who support him.

joe

qaddafi is no tyrant. you read too much american propanda. qaddafi does more good for the libyan people than any american president has done for the american people. not counting the top 5%.

the rebels are thugs supported only by u.s./nato. 95% of libyans support qaddafi. that is why nato had to carpet bomb (still is) libya with some 40,000 bombs to keep the "rebels" from being slaughtered by the citizens of libya.

stay away from u.s. propaganda and you will not be ignorant.

Good for him. For every one that's sitting here complaining about Jeon, what he's doing and his motives ask yourselves a couple questions first:

1. What the fuck are you doing to contribute to the efforts? 2. Is it really your decision to say he is doing this for the wrong reasons, therefore he should not do this at all? We all know NATO is in this for the wrong reasons, worse reasons than a meaningful life experience, but we don't care. It's for a good end result. Even if it's for his own self interest, who cares? You could only say his involvement is WRONG/BAD/ NEGATIVE, if you are pro-Ghaddafi. How could you possibly support the revolution and suggest that people don't support?3. How would it be any more productive for him to climb a mountain, or go on a vacation rather than supporting the Libyan rebels? If it is for the same self interest, isn't a good cause more productive than some other adventure?4. What the fuck are you doing to contribute to the efforts?

5. What the fuck are you doing to contribute to the efforts? - I will take a wild guess and say nothing.

If you are sitting behind a computer in the comfort of your freedom, what entitles you to tell people not to contribute? A little self righteous. Let the revolutionaries decide. It's not your place.

Ad hominem: have you (or these people) ever heard of it? I've seen a lot of valid reasons for thinking Jeon's actions are definitely irresponsible, and possibly selfish and frivolous. The main response to these claims seems to be, "But what are YOU doing to make a difference?" It's irrelevant, dude.

guestnow
guestnow

Its in response to people being mad that he's doing this. No one says he's doing anything useful or helpful but he's definitely not doing anything harmful for you chronic complainers to get all butt hurt. For the stupid excuse that he's a liability and he'll fail when it comes to torture tactics- he's got as much fighting experience as at least 50% of these rebels which may be 0 prior to this revolution. These aren't trained military personnel they're people off the streets that were given weapons to help. So if you're NOT doing anything where do you get the nerve to criticize somebody else for NOT doing anything either.

guestnow
guestnow

dude i will suck you off. I'll show you who's a lil bitch when your balls deep in the culo

Guest
Guest

So true...every time I see "but what are YOU doing help?", it makes me cringe.  Especially in this case where it doesn't seem like he's actually helping them.  If he really wanted to help, he would have brought food and clothing there instead of taking their food and supplies.  He would have learned how to protect himself so that they're not risking their lives trying to protect his ass.  If he really had genuine intentions of helping them however, then you can't really make him out to be a bad person, just reckless and naive.

guestnow
guestnow

You act as though these rebels are trained army militia men. half of them are children and 90% have never fought in the past so how do you figure they have more war fighting experience than this kid making them liable for his irresponsibility.

from a military viewpoint, he is a big liability to the rebel army.

1. if he is captured and tortured for information, he'd be the type to crack quickly. He doesnt have the right motives to withstand torture.

2. if he is captured, this gives gadaffi a political bargaining chip with the US.

3. he doesnt speak arabic -_- how the fk is he gonna fight effectively with the rebels?

Chris Jeon sounds like a thrill seeker and a publicity whore who went to Libya just to have something to brag about if and when he makes it to graduation.  He's either a genius or a complete dumbass ... only time will tell.  Though, if he does make it back (and I hope he does), he'll probably get interviewed on national TV, a book deal, and will be on next season's Survivor.

Doucheeeeee

=3
=3

All actions are judged positively and negatively by critics, Chris is somebody who could give a shit about criticism.  Sure he may not understand the weight and depth of the situation, but does a personal choice to do something for thrill really require careful planning.  Does a person like Chris really need the consent of all-knowing politicians, learn the history of the Libyan conflict, and study war engagement laws to personally go on his own trip to Libya?  A lot of us including myself, would never dare step into a danger zone like that, because we fear death.  It's not an easy notion to simply overcome, and Chris has the balls to do it. This action generates media attention and all that jazz but at the end of the day, he went and create an epic story for himself.  People need to stop putting heat on where people come from. He doesn't have to be a Libyan, living under oppression for decades, and then qualify to fight in the revolution. If he did pose as a distraction to the rebels I'm sure he would have been shot by now, but according to information thus far he has been a big morale boost to their cause.

All I know is if he comes back to southern california alive,  he's going to be winning almost every job interviews and stand out in every opportunity he chooses to pursue.  Law of averages say there will be more people who like him than people who don't.

Dust Maker
Dust Maker

Winning jobs? You mean the same way that somene like John Walker Lind is offered a job folowing each interview , right?

Ian Wang
Ian Wang

How does that guarantee job interviews and standing out?  I guess you mean that blind courage (if you call it that) and the ability to use firearm win over a rational, educated and intelligent mind.  Didn't people learn from the Bush years that those traits get us nowhere?

whatever
whatever

To make a call of duty analogy this is basically joining the winning team on domination with the score oh 9700 to 6000.
