Trader Joe's Will be Swarmed as Ralphs, Vons, Albertsons Workers Take a Last Step Toward a Strike

Updated: It's ova. A settlement has been reached, city Councilman Eric Garcetti tweeted. First posted at 7 a.m. Friday

Looks like you're going to be shopping at Trader Joe's, the dollar store, and maybe Vallarta.

That's because the workers at Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons took one giant step toward a strike. You don't want to cross the picket line just for milk, do you?

The United Food and Commercial Workers are pissed that the stores aren't paying more toward their health-care premiums. Workers would have to fork out a little more than $90 a month for family plans under the stores' contract proposal, and even then they claim the combined contributions won't fully fund medical needs in the year or so ahead.

And so late Thursday the union said its canceling a temporary contract extension that was needed to keep talks for a permanent deal on-track.

That means that workers could be striking this weekend because they already authorized picket lines last month. All they need to do is pull the trigger. (Didn't we just go through this? No, that was during George W. Bush's first term, believe it or not).

There are reports that some of the stores involved are already taking applications for replacement workers.

Vons sent us this statement last night:

The notice does not mean a strike is imminent or that a strike will necessarily occur at any point. The notice simply allows the union the ability to call a strike if they choose to do so. Vons and the other employers intend to remain focused on the negotiation process and urge the unions to do so the same.

Workers claim that the stores make billions and can afford a little more health-care money.

The union represents most of the grocery store workers from the border to Santa Barbara.

So, remember, Trader Joe's has great bread and tortillas. And awesome beer. But it's not really the place for paper towels and soap. Be prepared.

Updates: Even as Ralphs threatened to close its stores if the workers walked, talks continued Monday.

President of the grocers' union, Rick Icaza, said Monday morning that talks would continue "as long as we feel progress is being made towards a fair, equitable agreement."

The workers' own deadline to settle or strike passed Sunday night.

Albertsons sent us this statement after the deadline passed:

Albertsons, Ralphs and Vons are still at the table with the union. Progress is being made, but we do not yet have an agreement. Even though the 72-hour notice period has expired, nothing has changed. The terms of our most recent contract -- including wages and benefits -- remain in place, and our stores are open to serve customers as they usually are. We are still hopeful that a contract will be reached soon.

Update No. 2: City Council President Eric Garcetti tweeted that the strike has been averted:

UFCW announces settlement with employers--strike of grocery workers averted. Yea!!

[Added]: Here's the joint statement from Vons, Albertsons and Ralphs:

We are pleased to have reached a tentative settlement agreement with the union that continues to preserve good wages, secure pensions and access to quality, affordable health care - while allowing us to be competitive in the marketplace. We appreciate the hard work, support and patience that many different people have shown during the past eight months, and particularly the past few weeks.

@me - your name is appropriate. Me, Me, Me - it may be hard for you, but try to step back and look at the "big picture". This is more than about just an additional $90 it's about the middle class progressing. Unless you are above middle class or maybe you think you are, then these strikes will not affect you now.

What I am waiting to see is how many of our spineless politicians side with the unions to fatten their personal wallets. Any that do should be immediately recalled!!

Adding up your comment and mine makes all politicians spineless. Since most of them are crooked democrats, I will have to agree with you.

Talks are continuing but unions leaders warned that preparations such as picket training and stockpiling of food are underway so workers would be ready to strike at the end of the 72-hour period.               http://bit.ly/pt93Zt

Unions gave us the 40 hr workweek, helped with child labor laws, and did their best to bring about humane working conditions as a right.  Too bad they wish to maintain decency and fairness in the workplace and maybe spread the wealth a bit.  On the other hand corporations will treat  you, the average American, far better than any union worker,  so be sure to vote with your dollars and cross those lines.  Show those union folk what's really up,  after all companies like Goldman Sachs, Countrywide, BofA, Blue Cross, Boeing, Kroegers, Wal-Mart, TimeWarner, Haliburton and others all love you as opposed to those dastardly union workers.  Corporations are people too, just misunderstood at times.

People are dumb!!! If you were getting your hours cut and make only 8 bucks you would be mad as well!!! So you think that working only 16 hours a week making minimum wage is over paid and that we can afford health care while trying to support your child please!!!!

Ydennek1
Ydennek1

So you only make 8 bucks an hour and work 16 hours a week huh?  If you are only making $512 per MONTH (supporting a child no less)...why are you calling people dumb again?

In other words: get a jot at Ralphs, forget about having children, be grateful and put up with ugly, anonymous comments about it.

The grocery stores may pay as much as $15/hr for replacement workers. This is a good opportunity for those up caught in that catch-22 (can't get hired if you are not working) to get a temp job that will make you employable again. Work P/T during the strike, and job hunt as an employed person.

In other words:  "What's in it for me?  Fuck everyone else."  What a wonderful race to the bottom--and they're off!

Yeah, because the striking grocery workers are truly altruistic... they're not thinking of only themselves... they're strikiing for the good of everyne else and there's nothing in it for them... give me a break.

$90 per month for family coverage - that is a steal.

Jrldiver

Seriously! I'd love to pay only $90 a month for a family plan! I pay about $400/mo! I can't feel sorry for these union workers.

Maybe you should join a union so you can pay less.

I agree. My husband works for Vons and he did not vote to strike. This strike is considered a lock out. He wants to work and will not be allowed to. We have no problem paying for our healthcare. The union is forcing this strike on hard working employees. This strike hurts everyone.

I will joyfully cross those picket lines.

What does "this economy" have to do with getting the best value? Not to mention responsible shopping. I shop at TJs because 95% of the time it's cheaper than Ralphs, even with reward points and coupons.  And I feel better about it because I know TJs is paying their staff a good wage and providing them with benefits. Workers at Ralphs and Vons are striking because "in this economy" they're not making it and these grocery stores are jacking up prices for the consumer but not sharing the wealth with their employees. There's no way I'll be crossing a picket line, just like I didn't last time.

I never understood the concept of "striking".  Unions are like babies that have tantrums.  If you don't like your job or your employer, do what I do, get another job!! Can't we once and for all just do away with these organizations that act like leeches sucking the life out of good american businesses?! For the record, I'm crossing the line for gum.

voreason39
voreason39

@MIke - I'm probably a lot older than you and do remember when a livable hourly wage was hard to come by. The concept of unions and striking was and is to create a middle class that can afford to raise a family, afford decent housing and transportation. This was not the case when unions were weak and very few existed. Take a look at where we are today, corporate greed would like to go back to those days and they have many working people like yourself who never experienced bad time until now. Believe me no matter what industry you work in, union or non-union your life had been possitively affected by the fact this country has gone through a period strong unions and strong laws that protected the workers. Unfortunately, I see a cultural change that is taking affect in this country that may change the American lifestyle you enjoyed. Henry Ford once said that he wanted his employees to be able to afford the cars they were building.

Jacking up prices but not sharing with employees???  Their wages are way too high for a job meant for 16 year olds and do you know how much health insurance is in the real world lady?  Prices are high because of the Union Pukes.  I hope Vons does the right thing and lowers prices when these guys go on strike.

la_weakly
la_weakly

Surprise: They wont and they don't! And these 16 year old jobs? Turns out 40 year old's want them as well as we're at 9% unemployment.

soundbonz

I supported their last one, but I won't this time.  I have no problem crossing their picket line.  I pay more than they do for my health insurance. There are plenty of people who will gladly take those jobs.

UFCW Local 770 will have to do whatever they think is right for themselves, their families and their fellow members.  Consumers in Los Angeles will also have to do whatever is best for them and their families.  This time around, I really don’t see crossing picket lines, as a matter is disrespect.  For many families it will mean a matter of survival.

Aaron M.

I crossed the picket line just for milk the last time they went on strike.  and i will do it again. I am not going to stop eating just because they can't solve their internal affairs.

Thomas Coleman
Thomas Coleman

. . . and don't be bothered by going to a nearby non-struck store.  Let's just hope the struck store stays in business.  Otherwise you may stop eating after all!

Actually, it is a place for paper towels and soap. Trader Joe's carries both items. :-) Also, shopping at Trader Joe's shows that you are voting with your money for a company who gives great benefits to it's employees. I think that's something worth supporting all the time, not just during strikes.

Tarkus

Ditto... I have no qualms about crossing picket lines (esp since I have to use my Ralph's Double Points before month end).  This economy is definitely not the time to be striking, so I wish 'em luck (and hope their jobs are still there for them post-strike).

Ydennek1
Ydennek1

Go ahead and strike during this economy.  Yes I will cross the picket lines...even for a pack of gum.  And if the Grocery Stores cave into union demands and end the strike, I will start going to Trader Joes and Walmart.
