Racist Ads for L.A. Animal Shelter? Kids in 'South Central' Roughhouse With Pitbull, While Westsiders Pet Cute Normal Dog

Maybe we're just being paranoid and/or hypersensitive, but L.A. Animal Services' adopt-a-pet campaign looks to be landing on the racist (slash classist) side of PSA advertising these days. The ferocious bloggers at Opposing Views have posted photos of two banners, for contrast: The first, above, showing a Latina child getting slobbered on by a black pitbull, is located at the South L.A. Shelter. The second, below, in which a white girl hugs an old basset hound (or beagle -- can't quite tell), is located at the West L.A. Shelter.

Opposing Views
At the first location, another banner shows three black kids playing with the same pitbull. (Furthermore, as noted by Opposing Views, "South Central" is a long-outdated term that was deemed negatively loaded by city officials and replaced with simply "South L.A.") And at the second location, another banner shows an Asian child with his arm around a small terrier.

What do you think: Is Animal Services just trying to relate to the average constituent of each area, to maximize chances that a dog will get adopted? Or is the classification of a pitbull as a hood breed just straight racist -- a city-sanctioned stereotype to play into young L.A. people's already slanted view of themselves in society?

Opposing Views contributor Phyllis M. Daugherty, who formerly wrote about Animal Services for the LA Daily News, sinks her teeth into the department's shady ties as a sub-investigation of the racist new plugs (links added):

The seven $154 million new and expanded L.A. City shelters are strategically placed in highly visible, heavily trafficked locations throughout Los Angeles, and were carefully landscaped, including tree placement, under 2001 Prop. F bond funding being paid by property owners.

So what motivated the publicly undisclosed agreements between [brand-new Animal Services director Brenda Barnette] and two nonprofit entities to place giant banners which adorn the shelters with prominent logos of either the Bernheim Foundation or Best Friends? And, worse yet, why did city shelters become the target of a senseless massacre of mature trees? Ms. Barnette and Beverly Hills Attorney Steven Jay Bernheim seem convinced the supergraphics will cause people to get shelter pets.

We know: It seems like a long shot (and a serious case of "crying wolf") to suspect that city corruption could reach as far down as some innocent pet-adoption campaign. But there's definitely something weird going on here. In a Daily News article from August, Bernheim (the Beverly Hills attorney who commissioned these banners) said...

... "the the marketing banner strategy was hatched by animal welfare activist Pamelyn Ferdin, of Animal Defense League-Los Angeles, and agreed to by Barnette, who took over a year ago as head of Animal Services."

Ferdin is known around L.A. as the kind of animal activist who would go so far as to support radical groups that attack scientists who conduct monkey research. In other words: The kind of animal activist who, when push comes to shove, will choose animals over just about anything.

Including trees. And human cures. And, apparently, equality between South and West L.A. youth.

as a frequent visitor to the Van Nuys dog park, i can tell you that the headline is mostly true. Most pit bulls at this large dog park are owned by Black Men or Latinos. These dogs sre the strongest and most playful dog at the park. The owners usually dont have good control over the dog and seem to enjoy their aggresive nature. The other day i got into a fight w/ a Pit Bull owned by a Cholo. I asked him to leash his dog because he was very aggresive. He then pushed me,i grabed his armed and twisted it ,he fell to the floor screaming like a  baby. People who think this is a racist headline have blinders on.

I'm not jumping on the knee-jerk bandwagon calling this ad campaign racist because the story behind the ads isn't clear.  It might be cultural stupidity.  Some people are so ignorant of anything beyond the tip of their noses that they believe everything that they hear. However, if these ads were created and posted to make a malicious message then ...

I think you are going to make me hurl.  Jesus, have you BEEN to the animal shelter in these areas, do you SEE the types of dogs that are facing death? Pitbulls are a common breed in the south central shelters.  God, I hope you get slapped for your STUPID P.C. sensitivity bull crap.  LA Weekly FAIL

Think of how in movies pitbulls are associated with gangs and in movies gang members are typically depicted as minority members and  not with a pretty golden retriever or Labrador. the ads are definitely playing with stereotypes. beagles are expensive/ luxury dogs, why don't they have the little white kid playing with a pit bull or rottweiler . why are the black kids and the latino kids not playing with a cute terrior that needs a home ?

More than 30% of the LA shelter dogs are "pit" type.  It might have been good to use those for all the ads.  or Chihuahua, since they are another 30% (21 of the 86 pages of listings).  There were a few Beagles and beagle X dogs, but nowhere near the same numbers.  Marketing to the "area" is standard -- else why ads in Spanish in one area, Chinese in another?  That the LA AC has major problems is well known -- from their anti dog owner and certainly their anti dog breeder stand to selling a brand new facility built on public funds, to lack of AC in facilities and not forgetting some of the high salaries paid these folk.  Cutting down trees may be one of the more visible problems, but it certainly isn't unique in terms of waste of tax $. The ads are probably just thoughtless rather than racist.

Phyllis Daughtery: Hand-wringing white woman who 'anguishes' over 'those poor minorities', for her own attention-whore motives, but who wouldn't dream of actually LIVING outside her gated community with 'those people.' Take a walk through the south L.A. shelter Phyllis...75% or more of the dogs there are abandoned pits or pit mixes, good dogs who are victims of overbreeding. Adopt the dogs...Euthanize Phyllis and her idiot compatriots. Problem solved, the world= a better place.

Simone is obviously prejudiced herself.. just look at the headline "normal dog' as if a "pit bull" cannot be a "normal dog".. stupid and of course not true.. many "pit bull" types make wonderful family pets.. look it up Simone..you might learn something

Tina Clark

The writer of this article has her nerve accusing anyone of racism. I was outraged before I even read the article, just from the headline. Pit bulls as compared with "normal dogs"???? Implying that pit bull are "abnormal." This betrays a bigotry against pit bulls before the article even begins. I know it isn't always the writer of an article who writes the headline, but the article itself reflects the same bigotry. Even the way she describes the South L.A. banner is slanted: "a child getting slobbered upon by a black pit bull" trying to use the word slobbered to make the pit bull seem badly behaved (and she had to describe the pit bull as "black") as opposed to the more genteel sounding "a white girl hugs an old basset hound." The whole idea that these signs are racist is ridiculous; however, the writer's bigotry is blatant.

Maybe they are just trying to find homes for the breed that is most prevalent in those particular shelters?

can't you just hear the hue and cry if all of children had been white?  NOTHING pleases these people and there is a bogeyman under ever bed..

Does anyone complain when "malt liquors" are advertised on billboards in black neighbor hoods?  or when billboards for Mc Donalds are in Spanish in Hispanic neighborhoods.. there are cultural differences and if it saves a dog and gets a child a family pet.. more power to the shelters let's hope this gets more dogs inot homes and less into the dump

Honesty Helps is a frequent pposter who also runs a blog that trashes pit bulls, Barnette and the No Kill movement on an almost daily basis.. she/he wants all pit bulls dead, Barnette fired and  Winograd and No kill.. well HH wants them dead as well.. HH wants to see dogs killed especially at shelters..  HH should know full well about "racial profiling"  HH does it on a daily basis.. pay not attention to HH's rants.. they know not..HH would have seen all of Vicks dogs killed.. and more.. HH is a sicko who wants to be "heard" nothing more.. Ignore HH

Honesty Helps

No brass ring for you fearnot. I have never referred to all pits being killed, in fact, I am against bans for pits. Barnette is a puppet for the most evil movement ever, a movement that I consider to be more abusive to animals than Michael Vick could ever be. I base that on the hundreds of "No Kill" shelters that have been busted for cruelty since applying this program. If you had a good argument, you would not resort to name calling, would you? It hurts when people expose the truth about something you obviously believe in and it doesn't turn out the way you expect. It's not my fault that pits are being euthanized in record numbers in the shelters, they didn't get there because of "pit haters", they are there because of pit lovers. It's not my fault that pits commit 2/3rds of the dog bite fatalities, that is because of pit lovers not taking responsibility for their chosen breed. Unlike the Dobbie community who banned together to stop attacks by their breed, pit lovers remain steadfast in keeping their pits "game". They don't want to change pits and make them into more acceptable pets. Fearnot, bans will come and so will BSL at this rate and the only ones to blame for it are the pit lovers.

Honesty Helps
Honesty Helps

Once again Breeder Barnette is showing her true stripes. Those thinking the pit bull with the kids is okay because pits are "okay" are so mistaken. Pits are killing in numbers like no other breed in history and if anything, they should not be adopted from our shelters. Give the liability to the rescues and let them save them. This is racial profiling, plain and simple. Just like Breeder Barnette finds mix breeds to be trash and thrown away, she finds pits and certain races the same.

fearnot
fearnot

no YOU are the one doing the racial profiling.. do you not know about the Vick dogs.. some are therapy dogs.. how about the search and rescue "pit bulls".. the ones who do bomb searches. and, yes, the ones who are wonderful family pets... you are I am afraid the worst sort of bigot.. the one who hates dogs .. and hates people even more..

Honesty Helps
Honesty Helps

Do you know how many of the Vick dogs were adopted into homes? Three, that's all. And the one "therapy" dog was banned from the library readings to kids. And do you also know that a recent study shows that pits have a limited smelling capacity? So how does this affect them doing search and rescue, etc? The military doesn't use pits, and what are the majority of police K9s? I would rather be a bigot than to remain ignorant on an issue that is mauling and killing in record numbers unlike any other breed in history.

fearnot
fearnot

tell the truth .. 19 of the dogs are in homes.. and the "library dog" was outed along with ALL dogs from that library.. why post lies when the truth is so easy to find?

fearnot

see that is where your name is so wrong..this is the real story about the library:http://www.parade.com/news/201...

ALL dogs were banned from the library.. not just the Vick dog.. while you are there read where the other 19 dogs went.. to HOMES.as for their smelling capacity  well that bunk stinks.. any pit bull will tell you that.. it just is not so.Stop spreading the bigotry. hey a little honesty helps..

from the ASPCA April  2011:  Fast forward to a year later after the dogs were taken out of solitary confinement.  Some very kind and rational people fought the mean irrational people who wanted all (47 at that time)remaining dogs be put down, and those nice, kind, rational people worked with them. Twenty-five were immediately put into foster homes. These foster homes had kids, small children and other dogs, and cats. The remaining twenty-two were sent to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary where today, fourteen more have been adopted out (again, exact numbers may vary slightly according to reports.)Continue reading on Examiner.com Kansas City Pitbulls and the Vick dogs today - Kansas City Animal Advocacy | Examiner.com http://www.examiner.com/animal...

Seems like a bunch of libs arguing over how to waste tax payers' money. If it works, let them keep the signs. I see racially sensitive adds for community colleges all the time (ie El Camino Community, Compton), targeted to blacks and Latinos. No one makes a big fuss over those adds.

This is a ridiculous article - now cutting down those trees to put up banners, that's another story.  If the banners in South LA showed gang members with scary looking pit bulls it would be one thing, but there is nothing racist about showing the people in their own neighborhood what their family could look like with a dog available at their local shelter.  By calling out this banner as being racist, you are denigrating the pit bull, which is one of the most family friendly wonderful dogs around.

wth this crap, happen all the time everywhere.if its not a a car,its sports or even between men and women. Why didnt they have a special needs child up there?.What about the other animals?

Interesting Point though it may need another look.  South Central is over inundated with Pit Bulls thus they need to promote the adoption of them. It's easy to throw a violation flag into the game though mostly what you do is incapacitate effectiveness by raising issues like this. We have a near 50% euthanasia rate. Target marketing is normal and effective AND is not judging someone badly. Is a Pit Bull bad? Is it associated with a degenerate or lower class citizen? There are stereotypes but we must look beyond those to see the truth. Please adopt and tell a friend.

I wouldn't call it intentionally racist but its an stereotype nonetheless.  Its the kind of stereotype created under well intentions.  Its as bad as advertising quiche and lasagna in a white neighborhood and fried chicken and tacos in another.  What the heck was wrong with doing the same breeds of dogs for all neighborhoods.  Sometimes the stereotypes are so deep people actually think they're doing the right thing.  That's just sad.

Swisssheepgirl

This article's racist, against dogs.  Pit bulls are just as awesome as any other dog.  It doesn't even look like a a full pit bull Also, it looks black and white, and why does it matter what color it is?  I think you're stretching here.  Scientists who conduct monkey research suck, and so does this article.  Trees on the other hand, are awesome. RIP, trees that died for the banner.

Crikey
Crikey

This is a ridiculous argument. Essentially you are saying Pit Bulls are a lesser breed than any other, and not fit for white people, which is astoundingly breedist. Ask anyone who works in animal control, and they will tell you where they pick up the most abused and neglected pits in the city. Hint: Not Hidden Hills.

Sekon2none
Sekon2none

@ Crikey  You appear be missing the point of the charge.  The complainants are asserting that pit bulls are viewed as aggressive violent breeds that are common in Black and Latino neighborhoods while the sweet and docile basset hound is more likely to be seen a White neighborhood.

The City Attorney needs to look into the dirty dealing that is going on at LA City Animal Care Services.  Brenda Barnette is clearly inept if she is being led by a Beverly Hills attorney, the Animal Defense League and Best Friends.  Exactly WHO is in charge over there??????
