R.I.P. Continental Airlines: 800 Employees Say Goodnight to Iconic Airline at LAX 'Memorial'

Categories: Business

The Continental crew, circa 1970s.
Like a baseball team or a Hollywood studio, an airline, in America, holds incredible cultural weight. It's a corporation, sure, but only in the way that Coca-Cola is a corporation -- ads don't feel like ads. More like cozy pop art.

What little girl, at one point or another, didn't want to run away in pantyhose and a pencil skirt, for to be stuck with a golden flight pin? And no existing American airline can so legitimately rep its role in the iconic 1950s-70s "jetset" aesthetic -- so hot on the telly right now! -- as Continental Airlines. Pan Am may get its own show this fall, all adorably misogynistic with 10 leggy flight attendants to every man-captain, but Pan Am folded long ago. On the contrary, Continental narrowly avoided that fate and went on to prosper, much for the same reason 800 proud employees will be gathering at LAX this Saturday:

Organizer Todd Magnus says that when former and current Continental staffers got wind of a September 16 "memorial" -- which will commemorate the "passing of the Continental identity" in light of its merge with United Airlines -- they "got really excited," signing up by the droves.

And not just because of the little golden pins. In its 2009 recession guidebook Up in the Air, Cornell University Press used Continental (along with Southwest) as a shining example of how to "build a positive workplace culture that fosters coordination and commitment to high-quality service."

Not immune to the '80s, however.
Only then, the book argued, would the failing airline industry have a chance.

Continental may finally be succumbing to a merge, but it's not throwing in the towel. The partnership with United was pitched only as a means to preserve quality in "an increasingly competitive global and domestic aviation industry," and the new fleet will still boast the classic Continental globe on its tail-feathers, according to Magnus. (Though the planes will read "United.")

Now for the fun stuff. Todd says LAX's flight museum will be lending 30 uniforms, dating from the 1950s to present day, to put on display at the memorial. All the major Continental characters will be there, including Gordon Bethune, often credited for the airline's mid-90s bounce-back (on which he wrote his bestseller), and Tiger Childers, the stewardess who famously got married on a Continental flight.

Some more glamorous moments in the Continental legacy: In 1965, it became the first airline to hire a black pilot. In 1970 and 1987, it played a starring role in the original "Airport" and the original "Wall Street," respectively.

Beverly Hills man about town Robert Six also served as CEO for almost 50 years, bringing starlets Ethel Merman and Audrey Meadows into the Continental family. (The latter was commissioned with designing the airline's classic '60s and '70s flight-attendant uniforms, complete with mandatory pearl necklace. Fabulous!)

So, ladies and gents of Continental: Let enough nostalgia flow this Saturday, at LAX's equally iconic Proud Bird watering hole, to make up for the rest of us. And please, share your memories of the glory days below.

We've been watching these old things all afternoon:

Continental will never die, thanks to the awesome employees.  I started in 1988, my parents wanted the benefits!  When I began flying I was based in Denver, where UA had a huge prescence.  CO was such a disaster back then, most of us never saidwho we worked for.  When Gordon came along, the change was incredible.  I hadbeen out on leave taking care of my parents.  I had to extend my leave severeal times, to the point that I was afraid I was going to be fired.  Imagine how I felt whenI returned to the "Dignity & Respect"  airline that Gordon created!  It was incredilbe! That phrase has changed my life and Continental has as well.  I will forever be a proud Continental Flight Attendant!  In fact, I want that on my tombstone!

Hello fellow ex-CO colleagues!  I joined CO in SYD in 1980 just after they started South Pacific services to Australia and New Zealand and also Fiji and American Samoa.  In those days we were at the end of the line as far as long haul services went.  AFter making your way to HNL, the flights still had 10-12 hours to fly using the old DC-10-10's and once the DC10-30's were introduced it made non-stop HNL-SYD a reality.  We had a wonderful family of CO staff in this region, and the name of Continental Airlines will always live on in the hearts of many of us here.  Even though most of us went on to work for other airlines, CO gave us our first chance and for that we will always be grateful.  I also had 10-years with American Airlines and loved my time there, but CO was something special and will always be something special.  Long may she stay in our memories.

Continental Airlines has always been like a second family. Even though I left many years ago the friendships will last forever. I will always be proud to say that I worked for Continental and the memories and experiences that I enjoyed bring a smile to my face that will last a lifetime. It was a great ride.

What a fabulous weekend! Friends connected at the cocktail party on Friday night and continued Saturday night to celebrate the joy of having been part of the "The Proud Bird with the Golden Tail". Todd Magnus did an unbelievable job of organizing a first class function enjoyed by all. Fantastic!

I joined Continental in 1983 and worked there through 1996.  There were up's and down's but it was always a great place to be!

I'm proud to be an ex-con. The level of professional service we provided to our passengers went above and beyond the call of duty. I've heard so many platinum members say they hope the level of service doesn't disintegrate. Well all I can say is we can make this the best airline, we just need the right positive attitude and strong workforce ready to meet the challenges ahead of us. We can succeed

As a Continental employee from 1987-1994 (SJC/HNL/SFO) - LPS, the friendships and experiences still follow me today.  This was, and will continue to be, a life changing experience.  I hold dear my memories of Continental and often speak of the "good old days".  Even though we went from being a "Proud Bird" to "Making a Difference", we were the same.  A group of people that were more than co-workers.  We are friends and family even today.

This airline has been a part of my life for so long, I don't know if I will ever be able to say I work for a different airline than CO. Through my job I met my husband to be, moved to the US from my home country, had 2 children, and even during the years I took a break from work, I lived and breathed CO, living vicariously through my husband's recounting of his day at the office. I always came back to the airline that felt like home and family, and they always welcomed me back with arms wide open. I now work for CO with more pride than ever. Thanks for the memories. Proud to be an EX-CON!

LAX was Continental's headquarters through the heyday of the jet age.  I worked in flight as a flight attendant and even spent a few years in the LAXRR (reservation center) that was located in the old Mueller bldg on World Way West.   I've long since left CO, but it still remains in my heart...I saw it go from the austere days of  Robert Six right through the bleakest period in existence under Frank Lorenzo.    This is one brand that pains me to see go away, but I'm glad UA has kept a least a part of the CO image to live on.   LOL...I came to CO after being furloughed from my first Airline...Pan Am of course.   Damn I've been blessed!

I joined Continental in 1981, Looking back on these ads made me smile and gave me a feeling of looking at a cherished wedding album. Before Gordon, I often referred to Co as being in a bad marriage, I loved it so much - but it kept knocking me down. I was committed though and thank God for Gordon  it became the dream airline everyone wanted.  I won a Ford Explorer in 2004 and I still treasure it. I left in 2008 and will always miss the wonderful people I worked with and met through the years.. I am sad to see the name replaced, but United was my first airline so I have my airline career represented on the planes. Thank you Gordon for posting this (once again you know what we need, when we need it)  Susan Herrington BDL/ELP/DFW -EIT

As a former Continental employee, I am saddened. Even though I currently work for a different airline, Continental gave me my start in the industry over a decade and a half ago. My heart still belongs to them in some way , even as I sport my 22" Travelpro roller bag with the symbol and "CONTINENTAL" embroidered on it whenever I fly, regardless of the airline. Goodbye old friend.....

How much the Spirit of Continental will be missed! Through hiring bright and enthusiastic people and trainiing them so thoroughly, this became the  airlines one flew with confidence, and flights were often fun,one never felt like bus passanger on a Continental flight.
