USC's Freshman Class Most Diverse Ever: 1 Out of Four New Trojans is Asian

When we think USC freshman, we think white guy with a letterman's jacket, a mullet, a Mustang and a somewhat rich dad (says the Bruin).

But it turns out that not only are Trojans smart but they're diverse too.

In fact, the university is trumpeting its most diverse class of incoming freshman to date.

According to numbers sent to the Weekly ...

... of 2,931 entering undergraduates, 1 in 4 is of Asian descent, more than 1 in 10 (12 percent) is Latino, 7 percent are African American and 2 percent are Native American or Pacific Islander.

More than 1 in 10 (14 percent) are the first in their immediate families to go to college.

The "un-weighted" weighted GPA of the incoming class is a ridiculous 3.7.

The most-represented public high school is Arcadia high. The most-represented private high school is Harvard-Westlake. A majority of the new USC kids, however, are from out of state.

USC Dean of Admissions Timothy Brunold:

Not only are these students incredibly talented, both inside and outside the classroom, but they are a more diverse group by all measures -- ethnically, geographically and socially.

Hm. Maybe people will finally stop referring to USC as a school full of stupid, rich white kids! (Maybe? Anyone? Here's hoping!)

It would have improved this piece to compare the admission rate of minorities to their abundance in the population.  For instance, Hispanics got in at the rate of 1 in 10, but if the admission rate was comparable to the population of Latino, it would better than 6 in 10 in LA, and nearly 5 in 10 across the US. There's not much point in simply rewriting press releasees if you're not going to analyze their meaning.

Oh, and BTW there was no press release on this (not that I know of), just a one-sheet with stats (at least that's what I got).

Joe that's a point I've brought up before, but I shied away here because USC is not a public school, therefore there really is no obligation (other than, perhaps, a moral one) to represent its community. If it represented its immediate environs it might also be majority African American. Anyway, I get into the topic in a piece on the Berkeley bake sale laweekly dot com slash informer. Thanks.

And 10 in 10 (100 percent) are still douches.
