Video: Great White Shark Baby Rescued by Surfers Near Venice Pier

Categories: Animal Rights

Usually when surfers see a great white shark they run the other way. But a handful of guys south of Venice Pier ran toward an ailing baby great white like first responders over the weekend, and it appears they might have saved its live.

Video (after the jump) depicts at least a couple of surfers working to get a fishing hook out of the shark's mouth before sending it back to the surf line.

Pete Thomas' Outdoors, action and adventure blog has the deets (via LAObserved):

The juvenile white shark apparently was hooked on the city pier and became stranded on the shore with the fishing gear still in its mouth. It appeared listless and in bad shape, but at least its rescuers got the hook out and gave it a chance to survive.

(Great beach sounds accompanying the video, too).

Fishing at Venice Pier is done way too close to humans (yours truly has been hooked), let alone the more-endangered kind of sea life, and it goes on pretty much unregulated, unlike at other SoCal piers, where authorities will intervene if anglers cast too far from a fishing zone.

Maybe this will serve as a reminder to the city and county that people with hooks can be dangerous to man and sea creature alike.

Fishing and surfing will always be in the same field.  As a person that enjoys both I'd prefer surfing in a place where the wildlife is well fed and not looking for a desperate meal.  The sharks are there and will always be if people would quit being so scared of any creature that has teeth.  Look at what PEOPLE are doing to PEOPLE in Miami....I'd much rather surf with the sharks than get caught up in some zombie bath salt BS

My wife would say these surfers made the Goddess very happy.  I say they were damned lucky not to lose fingers.  But, hey, kudos to them!  High fives all around!

He was absolutely a juvenile great white...anybody who watches the video should look at the shape of his face. He has the typical pointed snout that great whites' have, while the black tip tends to have a blunt face. That was an amazing thing to do...whoever said people would be calling the surfers idiots if they got bit is insane. Nobody that cares for those amazing creatures would call them idiots...even if they had got bit. That being said-I do kind of wish somebody would have fed the woman that kept talking to the little guy. Might have made him feel better!!

That's why most surfers strap a knife somewhere, at least that's what we did when I was growing up..I may have surfed, and carried protection, but I would have done the same thing. You know what you are getting into when you go out and surf. Live with it.

Even adult great white sharks have black tips to their dorsal and pectorial fins. Also the surfers were relativley safe by putting the shark on its back because the sharks go into a sleep like state like an alligator when put on their backs.

We used to fish off Huntington Pier and I also surfed there in the70's.  They didn't allow you close to the pier when surfing.  I am proud of these surfers having respect for the animals whose homes they invade.  Very proud!

I'm a little worried about the man eater. If he were ok, he would have snatched the poodle.... Remember Tripper the Lab in Jaws...

Good for them for taking a moment to try and help the shark but the bunny hugging close to the piece made me want to vommit.  Perhaps if Dennis the bunny hugger stayed a reasonable distance from a FISHING PIER he would not have been hooked.

And just so there is no misunderstanding here. I applaud those people that saved this creatures life, they are beautiful and should rightfully be protected.

"Fishing is done way too close to humans." Really? Here's a thought, how about you stay away from the fishing pier! I have no mercy for people like that, the same surfers who try to work their way through the pylons and then blame the pier for their broke board. Ridiculous.

If we show kindness to our fellow predators then maybe they might show kindness to us. Or at least we won't feel like such massive pricks.

Are you out of your mind? Sharks are gonna leave us alone because we don't mess with them? Makes perfect sense...

It's not a Great White. It's a Black Tip Reef Shark. You can tell by the black tips on its fins.

Sorry, but it is a baby Great White....they have black tips on their pecs, their bellies are white, the tail is the exact shape, and they are born in the Santa Monica Bay. We surf with them every day. They are endangered and need our help and protection. They Do Not try to even test taste humans. They eat fish, lobster, sting rays....and because they grow up around surfers and swimmers - they learn as kids that we are NOT food....the adults are up in Humboldt County and average 16+ feet and swim under the surfers there - all the time. Once in a while when visiblity is bad or someone is swimming with seals, they make a mistake and confuse a human w/ a seal. The babies don't eat seals. They can't. They are babies and eat fish. They are very intelligent and careful creatures. The guy in the trunks did a great thing here....smart man!

It might just be me.. But, while it seems like it was a very wonderful thing they did.. How many people would be calling them idiots if the shark did what it does best.. and bit one of them? I mean, there is a reason why you are supposed to call people who have training in this sort of thing when dealing with an animal that is known to be one of the greatest predators in existence.. Also, how horrible would it have been if there was someone out there surfing who ran into the shark soon after they released it? It just seems like a lot of the comments here aren't taking how potentially terrible this could have turned out into account. Props to them for doing what seems like the right thing because no one got hurt.. But there were some serious opportunities for something to go horrible wrong here..

Yea great idea, let's wait for the proffesionals to show up! By then it would have died. People like you should not be able to breed! Surfers also know that they surf with sharks, most of the time they are not bothered by them at all. Because it is risky don't do it? You have a better shot at getting killed by people on your way to work then getting bit by a shark. Also if they did get bit by the baby shark, I'm sure they would get medical treatment and be fine. I skydive gee, maybe i should stop, maybe a bird will hit me then what? At least SOME people in this world are willing to take risks for others, thank goodness firemen take risks everyday to save sorry asses like you!

Hopefully Great White Sharks around the world will take notice and spare any potential victims from being shark food.

Its a black tip.... look at the fins...

No its a juvenile great white. Thus the snow white underbelly. Its not uncommon for a great white to have black on the tips of its pectoral fins. A black tip reef shark would have a black tipped dorsal fin as well and wouldnt be caught off a pier. A black tip would be adult at that size.
