West Hollywood Fur Ban Passed by Council: WeHo to Become Nation's First Fur-Free City

Categories: Animal Rights

Oh no you didn't.
Fancy L.A. ladies looking to add some baby seal to their fall collections, or hipsters sniffing out their own clip-on foxtail in the Burning Man/Wiz Khalifa tradition, can't hunt their prey in West Hollywood anymore.

The city tentatively approved an ordinance last night that will halt all sales of fur beginning June 30, 2012.

Mayor John Duran made it clear that some wording in the ordinance would have to be cleared up during the next couple City Council meetings:

Councilmembers still need to decide whether selling vintage fur at consignment shops or yard sales should be banned as well (though the overwhelming sentiment among them last night was that no, it should not), and Councilwoman Abbe Land thought it very important to consult the West Hollywood business community on how, and when, this can realistically be implemented.

"Would it be acceptable for us to approve this in concept?" asked Councilman John Heilman. And that's just what they did, 5-0, to a bleary-eyed yet overjoyed crowd at 1:30 a.m.

By 4 a.m., fur-ban advocates were still celebrating. The campaign's PR guy, Gary Smith, sent us this victorious email:

"After a seven-hour meeting, and lots of public comment, the council voted unanimously (5-0) to move forward. There are a few details they want to settle in advance of the next meeting, such as the date of implementation and civil penalties, but it's just what the Fur Free West Hollywood campaign wanted."

The fur ban's most ardent supporter was Councilman John D'Amico, the newest face at City Hall. It was his most highly publicized campaign promise -- one that likely gave him the edge in a competitive pool of candidates last March.

"This item is not about what to wear," he said last night. "It's about how we live now."

WeHo News
Strangely, though, before unanimously approving the ban, D'Amico's colleagues spent their time on the mic making (quite logical) arguments against it:

Heilman said the ordinance seemed to be drawing lines in the sand. He wondered aloud: Why is killing animals for food any better than killing them for fur, when one can easily survive without meat? Duran, who has HIV, piled on, asking himself why should he should oppose fur as fashion, when he supports animal testing in the name of advancing medicine and "eats a lot of meat on a daily basis."

But there was no swimming against the tide of popular opinion in council chambers last night. Almost 50 speakers, most from outside city limits, stood up to push for an all-out ban on fur sales, comparing West Hollywood's moral duty to stand up for animals to slavery, child abuse, the Civil Rights movement, etc.

Activists declared triumph from the outset:

"I cant tell you how excited and proud I am to be here tonight," said Ed Buck, WeHo resident and driving force behind the ban (pictured with dog, above). "West Hollywood is more than just this city. We are a beacon; we are the city on the hill. When we do something here, it reverberates around the city and the world."

Damn. Even more rampant were the adorable-animals-in-trouble emotional appeals: "It takes 10 baby seals to make one fur coat," said one woman. "As they're being clubbed, they scream and howl in pain and terror." And another guy: "I saw 500 foxes anally electrocuted right in front of my eyes."

What kind of death-wishing politician wants to argue against that?

Likewise, only a handful of stakeholders in the West Hollywood fashion industry spoke up in defense of their business practices, citing fear amongst their peers.

Genevieve Morrill of the WeHo Chamber of Commerce argued that activists' efforts would be much more effective if channeled toward "raising the consciousness of the consumer" instead of aggressively forcing local shops to shoulder the burden. A couple boutique owners said they were positive they'd lose customers and designer lines to nearby Los Angeles if barred from buying up the couple fur items in most collections.

Charles Hamilton, who proudly identified himself as producer of "The Cove," countered the economic argument with: "If you take the moral high ground, the money follows."

Guess we'll see about that (if the ban even manages to stand up in court). But in the meantime, a ban like this deepens the ironic divide in free-thinking West Hollywood -- L.A. County's balls-to-the-wall Boystown -- between radical moralists and advocates of personal freedom at all costs. At best WeHo (sounds sort of like a sneeze) is becoming an oligarchy. I know it's been said already, but ... what's next? banning the sale of any meat product in restaurants and markets? Wearing any sort of leather product including shoes, belts, suspenders, pants, vests, wrist bands? WeHo will need to put up a sign at it's border "BEWARE! Consuming or wearing any animal byproducts is strictly forgidden. All those not in compliance turn back now before it's too late."

It's a sad day when animals are put first and in front of humans. Sad day indeed. I pity all you.

Here's what you don't get: It's the people that live with lots of other people (ie in cities) that hate people so much that they love the shit out of pets. It's kinda just that simple.

When I look at a map of the US anymore, why does a pool table come to mind? One where the left near leg is slightly shorter than the others and all the screw balls are slowly collectng in that corners pocket?

Raccoons are one of my favorite critters because of their nosiness, but could you please bury alive a couple cows for me that I can come pick up next week in my big pick-up truck with a big gun-rack across the back? I'm specially hoping for some half-dead ones. /sarcasm

This is a fine case of a small group of people, getting together and yelling lies at politicians in the hopes to affect civil change which is overall derogatory to the benefit of society.  Fur is something that can be obtained from animals.  Animals, if you didn't know, are capable of reproducing.  You want to whine about animals being treated poorly?  What about all the people who are persecuted.  All this energy could have been put into something productive.  I don't live in West Hollywood, but when I see this kind of crap happening there, I know it's only a matter of time until the bible thumpers make me wear a little A (for Atheist) on my arm, and send me off to a camp.

NotAPopulist

Wait, you're responding to a typical leftist fascist law by claiming you're afraid that the right is going to stamp an A on your arm? In what kind of crazy brain does this make sense.

"Almost 50 speakers, most from outside city limits, stood up to push for an all-out ban on fur sales, comparing West Hollywood's moral duty to stand up for animals to slavery, child abuse, the Civil Rights movement, etc."West Hollywood is not the leader or a beacon of hope....you were invaded by a very few outsiders who had their way with your very weak and liberal council using lies and distortion. Trapping is illegal in California. Drink the Kool Aid, and while your leading the way check over your shoulder once in a while and see who is following, bet your lonely. It will never make the grade in court

Take a drive over to my neighbiors, He has a Dairy farm, 5,000+ cows that never see the sunshine in small stalls, in the barns, 24 7 365 all their lives, milked 3 times a day, pumped full of antibiotics to stay alive with sores all over them. They are fed chemicals and a straw diet and hey that is over a year old and half decompsed. Then even when alive on their last breath loaded in a front end loader and pushed into a compost pile and buried, don't want to shoot them because they would have to clean up the blood mess so they get them on their last breath... GOT MILK   !

BS! If a cow does not eat proper feed it can not digest the feed. No digestion = no milk.

NotAPopulist

Of course he's full of crap. His neighbor's giant dairy operation let him in personally to inspect their 5000+ cows that never are outside, so of course Mr. Liar had to have been inside, and furthermore his neighbors showed him they only feed their cows vitamins and half-rotten straw (lol), and also showed him that older cows are buried alive. Because they are so proud of this system they couldn't wait to run out and find lying liberals to show it to.

Go back and look at the dairy farm after your medications have been adjusted. If its self-medication, stop taking whatever for a few days. If medically prescribed, suggest that your physician double the dosage.

Congratulations West Hollywood!  You are a beacon of compassion and hope, like a lighthouse lighting the way in this world that barbarically clubs infant seals to death, and where dogs, yest DOGS, are skinned alive, beavers, coyotes, bobcats, and foxes are trapped in barbaric traps, left to suffer against the elements and other predators.  Many chew off their own limbs.  Further, these traps are indiscriminate so often endangered species are caught in these very traps or the family pet!  Then there are the traps that literally drown an animal.  Then there are those animals that are raised on fur farms in filthy and inhumane, vile conditions only to be cruelly anally electrocuted.

There is no excuse for this level of inhumanity and archaic cruelty!  Fur is cruelty.

As if you've ever seen one animal in a trap, or walked a line with trapper. You're just repeating fantasies and rumors that you have zero personal experience with.

That is a good news to the lovely animals. Why we wear them after eating them? Brutal factor.

This is disgusting.  When did my right to choose to buy fur get taken away!  Do you know how many jobs will be lost!  HOw many stores will move.  These animal rights people are so stupid and ruining the economy in West Hollywood.  They should be ashamed of themselves.

bratti

This is absurd.  Fur bearing animals are killed humanely while many of the animals we eat are raised in horrific conditions and slaughtered in cruel ways.  These activists should channel their energy toward helping the sick, starving, dying and suffering human beings around the world.  They also need to get educated on issues before acting on them.

let's discuss the ignorance and hypocrisy in this article, shall we?  first of all, seal is illegal to buy and sell in the united states...reporters should do their homework.  second of all, the idiots with the sign on their dog should also know that domestic dog (and cat, for that matter) is also illegal... no one's making a coat out of your dog.  third of all, is west hollywood now going to ban the sale of all leather all the boutiques, as well as the sale of all meat in hundreds of restaurants in their town?  for a city that was founded on freedom of choice, west hollywood certainly isn't staying true to their credo.  i'm disgusted that this council jumped on the animal rights bandwagon and believed all of the misinformation spouted by crazy activists who don't know what they're talking about.

Marlene_teach
Marlene_teach

Apparently the one that didn't do their homework is you. Cats and dogs are skinned alive as we speak for fur in china. They are illegally labeled as rabbit fur. No fur bearing animal is killed humanely. The majority are skinned alive. Do your research and take a look at undercover fur farm videos. Ideally, people who care about animals would like to see leather and such things banned, but are not likely to happen. So instead of seeing the hypocrisy in this ban, see at as a huge step for the animals that suffer a violent death on the name of fashion.

Jack
Jack

Marlene, Other cultures actually eat dog, cat and other animals that might be considered domesticated in the USA. As far as skinning alive most animals would be killed, bled, gutted through the abdominal cavity and then skinned, similar to how you would prepare beef, pork and other similar sized animals.
