Kristen Christian: L.A. Gallery Owner Behind Bank Transfer Day Talks About Her Inspiration to Take Her Cash to a Credit Union

Categories: Occupy L.A.

She says it has nothing to do with Occupy L.A. and its Occupy Wall Street sister movement. Class warfare? Meh.

Yet the timing of L.A. gallery owner Kristen Christian's idea couldn't have been better for those fed up with corporate banks that took billions in taxpayer bailout money in 2008 and are now find that it's okay to ream the American people with exorbitant debit card and account fees.

Christian's brainchild, posted to 500 of her friends on Facebook, was quite simple:

If you don't want to pay the likes of Bank of America $5 a month to access your money via debit card, just transfer your cash to your friendly, local credit union.

"I was tired of paying for fees for inadequate services," the 27-year-old founder of Le Spec Gallery near Koreatown tells the Weekly. "I found it disgusting that a large and wealthy corporation would target the working class, especially after the bailout money."

Simple enough.

But Bank Transfer Day has become a call to action for the Occupy nation. Christian told her friends to go ahead and make that move on Nov. 5. (And they told two friends, and they told two friends, and so on, and so on).

Now she has a Facebook page specifically for Bank Transfer Day and 28,000 supporters nationwide.

"The event turned into a movement," she says "It's a peaceful boycott of corporate banking started by one citizen."

And, addressing mostly rightblogger conspiracy theorists who think billionaire lefties are paying protesters to fuel the fires of the Occupy movement, Christian says, "We're not receiving donations from anyone" and that "this event is not associated with the Occupy movement or the group anony in any way."

By the way, the credit union she chose in defiance of Wall Street banks?

Coast Hills Credit Union based out of her hometown of in Lompoc, which is near her hometown of Arroyo Grande.

Read how petty Kristen Christian gets with a 13 year old little girl on facebook...

14 AugustJewel SteeleHi met u at Rachel Murray's party last night, I played a few songs... can i be ur friend on facebook? thx... :)

15 AugustKristen ChristianI think you have me mixed up with someone else. Cheers!

15 AugustJewel Steelesorry about that... :)

16 AugustKristen ChristianSweetheart, you're far too young to be adding random people you've never met. You should create a Facebook page that people can "like" & promote that way. If you were my daughter I'd be so concerned for you.

16 AugustKristen ChristianI'm getting married this weekend & the reception's next Friday at my art gallery. If you'd like to play, we'd be glad to have you.http://facebook.com/vivalespec

16 AugustJewel SteeleWow, sounds gr8t! Congrats on getting married... how long would you like me to play for? Are there other people playing? Oh, and my dad appreciates your wise words, he is my body guard. I really thought u were a girl who played at a party the other night and that is why i got u mixed up, but thx 4 bein so nice about it. Here's a youtube video my dad shot of me 4 a song i am working on >>> www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhE0n_...

17 AugustJewel Steelehey u around??? :)

18 AugustJewel Steele???

18 AugustKristen ChristianJewel,If you need this detailed confirmation immediately then I'll have to book a band who can wait until after the wedding for it. I simply don't have time to think on this when I'm preparing for a wedding tomorrow.Best of luck with your career!

18 AugustJewel Steeleoh, no problem, i apologize... just let me know, i am ready. funny, my mom said u were probably really busy and i shouldn't worry. just let me know and i will be there, i would be honored to play for u. :D

Jewel Steelewow, u really know how to hurt a little girl. i wondered what ever happened to u? really! u took me off ur friends list... i hope the married life is treating u good. all i ever wanted was to know what time u wanted me to play ur party. I may be young, but i am professional and i don't lead people on or leave them hanging... :(

Kristen ChristianJewel, As you recall I never added you. I told you that it was inappropriate for a girl your age to be adding so many adults she doesn't know to her personal Facebook.  Jewel Steeleas i recall, if u read my first message to u, i thought i met u the night before at rachel murrays party. i do not go around adding random adults that i don't know. but what does this have to do with u asking me to play at ur reception? i like how u turn things around. good luck! Kristen ChristianYou added a 40 year old Italian man that wasn't even at the party. I know because he's my friend. You saw him tagged at the event and assumed you met him. Please... for your own safety... stop. Something bad will happen if you keep doing stuff like that. Jewel Steelethanks, i get it, the reception never existed. :)  p.s that 40 year old Italian man was there and send me pictures of me playing guitar and singing...and yes he is my new friend on facebook... why do u lie to me so much??? Kristen ChristianJewel, my husband died. Don't be a bitch. Jewel Steeleyeah, my grandpa just died too, don't u b a bitch. i even told him about the gig i was going to do for u. thanks a lot. :(btw, is this the guy u just married?p.s. i have never played a funeral, but i am available.:D

Kristen ChristianI feel so badly that your parents are so terrible. But it's okay. I'm going to call CPS & let them know that your parents allow you to talk to 40 year old men online. :)Jewel Steelei am old enough to have a facebook and my parents check it all the time.  i think u r full of b.s.  i don't believe u ever got married, ever had a reception for me to play, and the worst thing of all is for u to say ur husband died.  my grandpa really did just die.  i think u need to worry about ur self.  btw, my parents are the greatest parents in the world, u must b really bored and should get a life. stop messing around and wasting everyones time. lol

I'm moving to the Westside soon (Marina Del Rey) and I'm looking for a credit union. My only membership qualification will be my LA zip code. So I could join any number of Credit Unions: Water & Power Community CU, First City CU, USC CU, etc. Which is the best? I'd love to see an article that rates the city's credit unions in terms of membership requirements, member satisfaction, branch locations, rates, web banking, fees, and amenities.

I switched over to first entertainment credit union a while ago. I left money I. Chase and wells cargo until recently.

In general, i found that all i really need is a credit card, direct deposit, investment options and hitting the atm every so often.

For that, a credit union is fine. Your mileage varies. Everyone is different. I recommend going with whoever is closest. Open an account and see how you like them. If the counter is fast, the hours work for you, parking is alright and online access satisfactory, make the full switch.

This is what we should be doing with the major banks anyway. For some reason, we've trust them blindly for decades.

Please u-tube Yuri Benmenov and you'll see this a part of a breakdown and civil war against the American that you know. She's a faux protester.  Arroyo Grande is a beach community in Central California.  Pull up Trulia.com or Reator.com.  The homes are extraordinarily expensive and are owned by the upper one percent.  No doubt she wears Nikes (a corporation), she has clothes made in third world countries that pay slave wages.   There is little doubt that everything she owns from her car to her kitchen are all manufactured by corporations.  Is she a hypocrite or what?

Credit unions are nice but customer service is awful.  And try running a small business using a credit union.  Good luck.

You would do better to move your money to something like a Schwab checking account.

MeyerAnselmRothschild

Mr. Finnegan. Try running a small business these days using banks that aren't loaning money to anyone anyway unless you're big business and part of the hypocrisy. Occupy LA and Occupy Wall Street are just looking for a level playing field. Aren't we all? Well, maybe not General Electric or Wells Fargo or Bank of America.

Don't believe the propaganda it has nothing to do with bank fees. The Socialist want to destroy America and the freedom of speech, religious freedom we have; the war has begun don't even think for one minute it's banking. George Soros and the NWO are trying to re-set the nations under a one world leader and you'll either conform or be murdered.

I think you guys on here are just nuts!!!! All this talk about propaganda and how certain people are causing so many problems for America!!!! Don't forget its Americans who elect these folks!!!!! Instead of calling names out. How about getting mad at Americans who elect these bad guys in the first place!!!!

" Occupy LA and Occupy Wall Street are just looking for a level playing field."

Did you get that phrase from BowelMoveOn or from Media Splatters?

If you're upset with the economy don't blame the banks and Wall Street, they were just doing what they agreed to do WHEN THEY DONATED MORE $ to OBAMA than to any other prior campaign in history.

GO MARCH ON WASHINGTON and pee on Barney Frank who with his boyfriend working at Freddi Mac put the fix in to give out MILLIONS OF loans to deadbeats GUARANTEED by our tax $.

Go march on Chicago and blame Rahm Emanuel who worked Fannie Mae like a spigot. GO BLAME OBAMA who helped ACORN SUE BANKS TO GIVE LOANS TO DEADBEATS. Go FIGHT CLINTON who started it all insisting banks make BILLIONS IN LOANS TO PEOPLE WHO COULDN"T PAY THEM BACK.

"Level playing field" my aunt fanny - more like "spread the misery around" - we see the videos on youtube of your cadre leaders and the groupthink and group chants.

Go complain to Washington, but shove your commie BS.

Thank you don't stop telling the truth, the ones who should be jailed are Christopher Dodd, Barney Frank, Eric Holder, and President Obama for dereliction of duty, for not upholding the Consistution of the United States of America.

My credit union offers better service than the banks>

This is stupid. Why would anyone exercise free will and take their money out of a bank they don't like, especially when that bank has the gall to charge a fee for a convenience they provide. This sort of free exchange of commerce has no place in the USA.

Yes, it totally is:

But as a consumer decision there's nothing wrong with her little Facebook movement. Similar "movements" happen every hour of every day, which is also called "capitalism." I'm happy to see a GALLERY OWNER from SAN LUIS OBISPO is standing up for her fellow 1% though

As a matter of fact, I personolly just happened to open a savings account with Legacey Credit Union a few weeks back.......am hoping to get back to work soon, and when that does happen, I intend on shutting down my savings and checking account with Wells Fargo......just not there yet. Hope it'll be soon.........and nobody's paying me a cent to even think about it. These right wingers are getting more and more absurd in their accusations of lefties "getting paid off..."; that's the problem - nobody's paying me off to think for myself. Silly Right Winger Rabbits.........

Unlike the OWS losers who don't pay their student loans back, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America paid their TARP loans back with interest. Do you think the Dodd/Frank Financial Reform Bill caused the banks to charge more for their services?

Howz about protesting Solyndra and the $575 billion fleeced from the taxpayer? The owner, Kaiser is a $billionaire. Have you ever asked yourself why a billionaire, needs a taxpayer subsidized loan? Do you know Kaiser has raised $100's of thousands for Barack Hussein?

I wonder if you know how to read, and think critically? What's with all the chanting at the OWS gatherings?  It really creeps everyone out, kinda like "Children on the Corn" or something.

Lex

Uhm, not everyone in OWS is a student.  Yeesh.  I'm a small family business owner and feel that OWS movement has its validity… to everyone.  Also, I could care less if the corporate banks paid off their loans.  We're talking about adding more fees.  The point that Ms. Christian was making is how do you get the gall to add more fees when at one point you were with your hand out.  The minute Chase proposed that my free checking was going to be ten dollars a month.  I went Union Bank, then they proposed fees, so I left for Credit Union.  Either way, I want you to think about this.  Speculate for a second that if each month throughout the year, a bank could average about one to three million people in a month, Nationwide, that can't meet the requirements to avoid fees.  That's 300,000,000 for service fees.  Okay, but what is that fee for?  Because it's so hard to maintain your bank account because you don't have enough money in it?  What service did they do for you?  Think about it.  A few transactions, here and there.  I don't even use checks anymore, I use the ATM and rarely go inside the bank, etc.  In this modern day of electronics, with eStatements, etc.  It seems to me that whatever monies they pull from fees, seems over the top.
