CalArts Racist Graffiti: Black Students at Valencia Campus Targeted by Vandals

Bad art, objectively.
It's hard to keep a racist-graffiti scandal under wraps these days -- media hit-seekers sniff out that stuff quicker than Schwarzenegger baby mamas.

But back in early September, California Institute of the Arts officials did a pretty crafty job quarantining the aftermath of multiple scary attacks against black student Sasha Swedlund to a simple all-campus memo. Spraying racist messages is a "hate crime" and a "clear breach of CalArts' harassment policy," the Office of the President warned students, faculty and staff. Other than that, though...

... the vandalism went under the radar.

"My studio has been broken into three times," Swedlund tells CBS2 today. And this Halloween weekend, another victim came forward:

Daine Carter, a senior at the Valencia art school [Note: Headline originally placed the school in Pasadena, but has been corrected], says he returned home to his on-campus apartment Friday night to find red paint splashed all over his walls -- in the form of swastikas and other "devil signs."

He adds in an interview with CBS2 that some of his most expensive paint brushes were destroyed:

The school's September 8 memo acknowledged that there had been "a few recent acts of hateful and racist graffiti found on our campus, the most recent of which declared, 'Niggers are morally corrupt.'" Here's the rest of the stern scolding.

We want to make it clear that as a collective of artists we welcome an exchange of ideas and challenging critique, but always and only in the context of respect. We do not accommodate or accept language or actions imbued with hate and that aim to marginalize or strip another of their humanity. Such actions are cowardly, ignorant, and wholly counter to the values of the artists we seek to be and become and we want to stress that there will be no tolerance for anyone caught engaging in these acts. Lest anyone feel that they are protected under the banner of "free speech" we want to be clear that this type of vitriolic language displayed in this context is considered a hate crime and is a clear breach of CalArts' harassment policy. Furthermore, we warn that anyone who witnesses such an act and does not speak out becomes complicit in these hateful and racist acts. It is incumbent upon all of us as members of this community to take responsibility for the spaces we share and to speak out and empower one another when any injustice takes place. As Martin Luther King Jr. once stated, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." As we begin this new academic year we hope that we can move forward in an engaged, critical, and even controversial manner, but in a way that respects the contributions and multiplicities of every member of our community.

Looks like the message didn't get through. We've contacted CalArts media relations for comment this morning.

We've also contacted the Black Student Union, to see if there's anything students think administrators could be doing to prevent these apparent hate crimes. In similar situations, BSUs at other California campuses have pinpointed the root of the problem at the lack of diversity in admissions. (A tough topic, considering the state's ban on affirmative action.) According to StateUniversity.com, only 1.8 percent of the CalArts student body is black:

Those familiar with campus life, let us know: Are these anonymous hate-tags mere isolated incidents, or is there a larger spirit of racism on campus that needs to be addressed by President Steven Lavine?

My husband was a employer of CAl Arts ~ Afro-American facility supervisor who had a hate crime done to him having a KKK placed upon his stapler in Sept.2011 the police were called and management was informed to call the police back when the person or persons were found to have done this , after a week or so of my husband living in fear the person responsible was determined and the police were NOT  called but he was suspended for 3 days with out pay and brought back to his same position and resumed working. In Nov.2011 my husband was suspended with out pay because he had retrieved a lap top out of a open hazard waste bin ( that all employees , staff, faculty and students retrieved items from ..no rules at the time in doing so ..and I  have statements to vouch for that ) the lap top had been reported stolen un-renounced to my husband because he retrieved it out of the trash  and brought it home . Nov. 12 police officers and 2 detectives raided my home while my husband was at work and asked me where my husband keeps his valuables and his safe and that he sells items on E-Bey what is his account  and tossed several photos of portraits and coins  at me ( that had to have been given to them by Cal Arts management assuming my husband stoled form his employer school ..he worked there for close to 10 years with nothing but outstanding reports placed in his file ..  after searching my home and finding nothing other then the computer my husband retrieved out of the trash they left and my husband was arrested at work in front of everyone (  with out  knowing why ) he was suspended with out pay and obtained a criminal justice attorney to clear the charge on him of grand theft my husband for 5 months went court ...not one time did Cal Arts management reach out to my husband ( as they already convicted and judged him ...for they were the ones that had gave the photos  of the stolen items to the police when they raided my home assuming because the lap top pinged in his home he stoled other items also ( why would that be assumed he was a long time hard working likable by all students and staff with nothing but good reports..although upper management changed hands about one year prior ) ..after months of court dates and draining upon my husband and him just wanting to get back to work his job he took a offer that the DA gave him and his attorney said was good My husband took this offer in clear homes of returning to his job at Cal Arts ..because the item was in his home and that could not be denied ..my husbands attorney advised him to take the plea of no contest to receiving stolen property and the grand theft would be dropped and his attorney wrote up a letter faxed it to Cal Arts on behalf of my husband so my husband could return to work ..My husband was called my upper management that he was terminated from his job ..we were devastated and shocked on top of that Cal Arts appealed his unemployment. Now the Irony  of all this is  : .... THE PERPETUATOR  THAT DID THE KKK ON MY HUSBANDS STAPLER AND DID NOT HAVE THE POLICE CALLED BACK ON  WHEN HE WAS FOUND OUT TO BE AND THAT IS CLEARLY A HATE CRIME..HE IS WORKING IN MY HUSBANDS POSITION AND WAS GIVEN A RAISE. Can you really suggest that there is no racist going on at CAl Arts ..the ratio of Afro American employees ..at the time in Nov. 2011 were at almost none ..workers none other then my husband and a couple  office ladies  teachers a few ..What was done to my husband by Cal Arts was wrong and racist..KKK ON A STAPLER ..HATE CRIME ...SUSPENDED FOR 3 DAYS NO PAY ...RETRIEVING A LAP TOP FROM A OPEN TRASH BIN ALL RETRIEVED FROM AND NO RULES AT THE TIME FOR DOING SO ..THE LAP TOP HAD BEEN REPORTED STOLEN ..AND NOT KNOWING THIS BECAUSE IT WAS IN THE TRASH ..SUSPENDED WITH OUT PAY THEN TERMINATED AND THE PERON THAT DID THE HATE CRIME A CRIMINAL ACT PLACED IN THE PERON WHO ONLY GOT INTO A TRASH BIN OPENED TO ALL WITH OUT KNOWLEDGE THAT THE ITEM THAT WAS TAKEN OUT OF THE TRASH WAS A STOLEN ITEM ..THAT PERSON THAT DID THE KKK TO THAT PERON THAT RETRIEVED OUT OF THE TRASH WAS PLACED IN HIS JOB AND WAS GIVEN A RAISE .

CalArts is an intolerant institution. Its defenders' well-rehersed rhetoric rings shallow in light of:1) the institution's high tolerance level for one certain white male tabla player's "fascist fa**ot band" campaign. 2) repetitive screenings of pornographic videos in the lunchroom during noon-hour.3) an "art" project that hatefully depicted an elderly office clerk in lewd postures with other faculty -- which caused that poor lady to end up in the hospital!! -- the list really does goes on. CalArts' idea of practicing "tolerance" is their steady track record of permissiveness towards their celebrated male faculty who frequently prefer young female students, as well as a plentiful pool of male students who boldly harass at will and with impunity. Even the slightest investigation would reveal more than one should ever want to know about the unsavory and unwritten codes at this "school." The student body is indeed overwhelmingly white and upper-class, as is institutional mentality. Racist assumptions underscore the faculty's "diversity" discussions, which, as Ms.Atkinson pointed out, certainly do happen. However, the politics and rhetoric at this elitist white institution is very much saturated with what bell hooks called "white supremacist capitalist patriarchy," and this recipe is perfected with an unhealthy dose of denial thrown into the mix. Lo Po's inability to perceive the intention of this institution to maintain a disproportionately white, moneyed, male student majority is demonstrative of the success of their efforts. The Atkinsonian dialectic of this white, male-dominated institutional thinking is absolutely pervasive, and like navel-gazing, it is fixated on reflexive self-absolution in the stark absence of affirmative actions. I highly recommend CalArts' signature course: intellectual paralysis 101.

Sincerely,Former CalArts Student

P.S. Should anyone doubt me, just ask the (few) faculty of color in an anonymous questionnaire, and thetruth will out; that is, unless you have eavesdropping Deans monitoring their responses. They practiced unjust tuition hiking with Enron-styled justifications, and it makes a ripe location for a permanent Occupation. Thus ends my respectful critique of CalArts.

I too am a grad student at CalArts and I don't find these incidents to be at all representative of the overall atmosphere at the school.  In general, CalArts is a friendly, open, supportive community.  Also, I'm not sure about that 86.2% white statistic -- I certainly SEE a very diverse student population when I walk around the campus every day.  Whoever is committing these acts obviously has some major problems but I don't think people should assume that these hateful behaviors and attitudes are AT ALL representative of the school at large.  CalArts is a great place and the student body is, for the most part, made up of kind, intelligent people.

I am a grad student at CalArts and have to say that these attacks seem pretty horrendous, but also somewhat removed from the way students act here.  I may be wrong in this, but I think it's just a bunch of immature morons writing things they don't understand fully thinking that they are funny or whatnot.

When 18-25 year olds get drunk or restless or whatever, they can do some pretty stupid things.  I don't want to say it's not meant to be hurtful (because it may well be), but I think, based on my knowledge of the student body, it was done more for shock value and out of ignorance (and a lack of understanding the repercussions of your actions) than out of hate.

Actually, some of your information is correct, but quite a bit of it is wrong.  CalArts is a microcosm of the world at large, and we have the same issues as the rest of the world.  Attacks are not just geared towards Black students and these issues come more from the fact that we accept students for all over the world, not just the Los Angeles area. Some of our students come from small towns where racism is fairly apparent.  It is one of our jobs to address these issues when they come up and we have spent countless hours doing so in faculty meetings, student meetings, and campus meetings. There has been a Diversity Committee meeting since the early 90's, and some of us have been working on this issue for a very long time, and there is now an Administrative Position that addresses these kinds of issues for all people of color, sexual preference, and class.

This in no way excuses the attacks as they are horrendous.  And the world is a racist place. You should know that if these students are caught, they will be expelled.

A black student probably did the deed. Remember that noose at UCSD?

The noose was not planted by a black student.
