Cindi Santana, South East High Student, Allegedly Stabbed to Death by Ex-Boyfriend Abraham Lopez; Mom Had Warned LAUSD

Categories: Crime, Death

LA Late
Cindi Santana (right) was allegedly killed by her ex (left) at school last week.
Update: Lopez has been charged with 10 felony counts, including murder and "false imprisonment by violence," by the L.A. County District Attorney. He'll be in Downey Superior Court tomorrow, facing a maximum sentence of life in prison and a recommended $1.28 million bail.

The fatal stabbing of 17-year-old South East High School student Cindi Santana last Friday -- allegedly by bitter ex-boyfriend and fellow student Abraham Lopez, 18 -- is made even more tragic, this morning, with reports that the murder might have been prevented.

LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy tells KNX news radio that Santana's mother warned South East High officials last week that Lopez was out of jail "after allegedly threatening the girl."

And the comments Lopez posted to his Facebook page on Wednesday, under the name "Junior Lopez," reveal that disapproval from Santana's mom may have been the source of his rage. LA Late copy-pasted the foreshadowing rant:

"I could give a -- about what ur mom put me through but the fact that you deny us after so long and sided by ur mom after everything i have done for u and made sure i fulfilled all ur needs, all this ... u filled my head with you made me what i became but like i said the fact that you denied what we had in front of ur mom and my sis is what is breaking me the most you had something good and you threw it away i hope you soon realize."

And in comments on the post, he reportedly wrote:

"Si true but she denied us because she's afraid to tell her mom how she feels about me and this is just basic info but now I can talk to her no more and it sucks:( ... Love ... with my ex. We got back together but because of her mom we can no longer see each other."

One senior at the high school, located in South Gate, told the Los Angeles Times of Santana and Lopez: "They were always walking around school, a happy couple. It didn't seem like there was nothing wrong,"

Along with his young ex-girlfriend, Lopez allegedly stabbed 11th-grader Jorge Garcia, a varsity football player, and Dean Christina Ordonez when they tried to intervene.

"During the argument [Lopez] began suddenly striking [Santana] with his
fists and then pushed her to the ground,'' reads an L.A. County Sheriff's Department statement on the attack. "The suspect then stabbed the victim several times before being subdued.''

Grief crisis counselors are available on campus today, and two memorial Facebook pages have been set up for Santana.

But friends and family -- and any parent with a kid at LAUSD -- can't help but wonder: Why wasn't security beefed up at South East High following the heads-up from Santana's mom?

Deasy said on the radio that school officials get tons of tips just like this one that end up going nowhere, and therefore can't react dramatically to every one.

But the seriousness of Lopez' threats seems to have warranted some extra caution and protection of Santana on campus. The Times reports:

Three days before the stabbing, he'd been released on $50,000 bail after being arrested on Sept. 25 for making a criminal threat against Santana. After the stabbing, authorities became worried that Lopez might have planted an explosive device in a car owned by Santana's family. That concern led to the temporary evacuation of the hospital parking structure where the victim's family had driven.

Parents gathered at the school yesterday to call for amped security measures like bag-searching and running students through metal detectors.

What do you think? Was this an isolated incident, or have LAUSD officials let security slack to dangerous lows?

im a student of this district (a high school senior) and i have many friends that go to south east high and if the securities slackk off on their job like in my school then i blame the district!

Joe
Joe

here we go again, let's SUE The district, blame them, it was their fault!   honestly, I find it only fair to evaluate the situation, yes, the district needs to beef up security but lets be real, PARENTS are the most effective anti-drug, anti-gang, and anti-violence out there. PARENTS step it up and take care of your kids, PERIOD!!! the rest will fall in place, enough is enough with trying to blame everyone out there, it starts and ends at home, school is but a support they are not responsible for raising and educating our kids they are a support, so parents take your place and you will see how everything will get better! my sister went through a similar situation, and we (her family) had to handle it on our own before it escalated, and believe me it could've, we didn't wait for anyone to do it for us, so there

Even if this tragedy hadn't taken place on an LAUSD campus, it would've taken place elsewhere. With amped up security, maybe it wouldn't have happened at school (though you can still kill someone without metal weapons), but let's face it, with that kind of rage in the man, he would've found some other opportunity or location to do it. Everyone always wants to blame the big bad school district because they think they can make money off a lawsuit. But there's got to be a better way to protect women (or people in general) from stalkers, crazy exes, etc. If she was killed on a city street, would you blame the city? Or if she was killed on your front lawn, are YOU at fault? Place the blame where it belongs: on deranged individuals.

What i STILL don't understand is how long it took for someone to react to the incident...I mean it was during the lunch hour. When I was in high school (which was only 5 yrs ago), if a couple was aruguing, people would notice and kinda keep an eye out. THEN him hitting her and pushing her down to the ground, how did no one react to this?!? I know they're just teens, but I recall people trying to protect each other ESPECIALLY if a guy put his hands on a girl. Props to the football player that was brave enough to step in, had more done so, this fatality could've been prevented. POWER IN NUMBERS...My condolences to the Santana family and anyone who knew her. May Cindi rest in peace.

This tragic incident definitely should raise awareness about dating violence. There are definite ways in which this incident could have been prevented, especially since fellow students who have been interviewed even listed some warning signs of his abusive behaviors.

www.loveisrespect.org offers great resources that could help us all become more informed about the issue of dating violence. Also, the website offers 24/7 online chat support and texting service for any questions people may have.

Again, this is a very tragic incidence and my condolences go out to Cindi Santana's family, friends, and loved ones.

Violence can happen anywhere and unfortunately it happened at a school site on this occasion.  A person who is irrational and motivated by jealousy, rage, and anger is not easy to contain or control no matter what the location.  Making schools the scapegoat for incidents like this is unfair.  The responsibility is on everyone.  Clearly Abraham was mentally disturbed and his parents have everything to do with it.  The school, the police, and everyone who knew of the dysfunction in their relationship had the ability to intervene, but maybe not change the outcome.  It is clear the perpetrator was abandoned by his mother, could not handle feelings of rejection, and was so mentally unstable that he also hurt others.  The mother's comments about her son loving Cindi were ridiculous.  No one would ever want their daughter with a monster like that and she is in denial about how horrible a person he really is.  LAUSD does not accept school violence and to imply that it is ignored is hogwash.  No school in the country can be protected 100 percent from violence.  Schools, families, and communities must work together and identify those students capable of committing these acts of violence before they occur.

This is so SAD and disappointing in SOOO many ways! First of all NOBODY has the right to take someone else's life for ANY reason. Its sad bc Cindi seemed like such a beautiful person on the outside as i'm sure she was on the inside and nobody deserves to die like this. I am also disappointed that the school and police didn't take any precautions when it came to Cindi's safety. From the report and his FB acct he seemed like a freaking psychopath a RED alert that this dude needed some SERIOUS help. Hispanics are giving us a BAD name! It's a shame that my race is going downhill over dumb senseless arguments come on LATINOS we are known for our kindness and loving hearts NOT violence! RIP CINDI SANTANA may GOD have you in his Glory!!!

Why has anyone made comment about this relationgship this was clearly a teen dating violence relationship. Simply by reading his post clearly shows obssesion "after all I've done for u andmade sure i fullfilled all your needs" clearly this is the mental abuse abuser making the victim feel guilty. I'm sorry but there is no reason why someone should take anothers life. The boy could have easily just left her alone as hard as it was. If you need more on teen dating violence there is a great website let's start buy educating these teens on healthy relationshipsLoveisrespect.org

I am sickened by this latest murder of a beautiful young woman by a man who thinks his life is so important that he can deprive her of her life and what looked to be a wonderful future.  If I had been her mother, I would  have taken her out of school for a few weeks until things calmed down; however, kids have to go to school and she probably didn't consider this measure.  We have too many battered women's shelters for obvious reasons. Get a grip guys! (I know most of you do not deserve this criticism; however, the pressure on young women to bed and wed without a thought to their own passion for knowledge and higher education is appalling.)  Thank God I went to Berkeley!  I have just made my first feature film (wrote, directed and produced), and I hope to make it on my own.  I've had enough "help."

What does Berkley and movie have to do with this girls death?? No one cares about you! This isn't about you. I bet u just talk about yourself in every opportunity you have. This type of incident could happen anywhere ..& last time i checked it was the white kids from suburbs going postal & shooting up everyone at school.

For those people trying to blame the boys parents.... IT IS SOOO UNFAIR TO BLAME THE PARENTS!!!!  MANY PARENTS RAISE THEIR KIDS TO BE RESPECTABLE YOUNG PEOPLE, BUT UNFORTUNATELY SOME PEOPLE LET THEIR ANGER TAKE CONTROL OF THEM AND ALL THEIR PARENTS EVER TAUGHT THEM!!!  I'M NOT SIDING WITH THE BOY, WHAT HE DID WAS WRONG , I'M JUST SAYING IT'S NOT FAIR TO BLAME HIS PARENTS. AS PARENTS WE RAISE OUR CHILDREN TO BE RESPECTABLE LAW ABIDING CITIZENS. HOWEVER, THE ULTIMATE DECISION IS EVERYONES OWN TO MAKE.... MOMMY AND DADDY CAN'T BE THERE TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR ANGER AND PREVENT YOU FROM MAKING YOUR OWN DECISIONS. THE ONLY PERSON TO BLAME HERE IS ABRAHAM HIMSEL. AS A MOTHER, MY HEART PAINS FOR CINDI'S FAMILY. I PRAY THAT THEY CAN BE CONSOLED AND THAT WITH TIME THE PAIN IN THEIR HEART CAN BE EASED, AND THAT THE MEMORIES OF BEAUTIFUL CINDI WILL BE STRONG ENOUGH TO HELP THEM LIVE LIFE JUS AS SHE WOULD WANT THEM TO LIVE IT.

My heart and condolences go out to Cindi's family. Personally didnt know her or the ignorant mistake of life (Lopez) who took her life away. Yet,I dnt understand why lopez was in scjool ground after he was recently released on bail? After criminal threats? Weird but regardless this heartless kid apperantly doesnt know the meaning of love. To love is to be able to allow someone to be happy with or with the person. He took the work and meaning for granted and unfortunately took a life away from a family, a friend,a sister,a daughter, and someone that never made it to become a successful person in life. I hope that in that jail hole he thinks back of all the wrong he caused. But a cold heart never feels.

I know there have been other attempted stabbing incidents where the student at this school was not expelled, or even suspended. Instead, the students had to apologize to the attacker for "bullying" him. Even students who didn't know him. This is how this happens. People ignore warning signs thinking it could never escalate. My condolences to the families.

History repeating itself...rejected teenage boyfriend losing to his emotions and submitting to evil. Innocent girl exploring life and feelings, her family not realizing the gravity of their actions...Add in the growing celestial forces (moving from Pisces to Aquarius).  Repeat another saga of a disconnected LAPD and LAUSD who forever seem out-to-lunch (and are party to this crime). Where are we headed?

The districts motto shouldn't be to under react to tips such as these because they might risk overreacting over nothing...It should be to overreact on tips such as these because they might risk under reacting over something tragic!

Lydia Grant
Lydia Grant

This is not an isolated incident. John Deasy states they get "tons of tips."Many students are attacked on Campuses, Teachers too, but they are discouraged from reporting the incidents. Unless someone dies or the Media finds out, it is all swept under the rug. I know I went to the District when 10 staff members were attacked by students at our Middle School. One teacher was hit in the face and lost her teeth, and another was tased by a student. I reported it to the Local District Superintendent, Same school where I met with Superintendent Cortines because the school was refusing to follow a restraining order in a case that started as attempted murder. This is a school in a "good" area. The District has been very lucky. My mantra with LAUSD for Years is: Does someone have to die before you will do something about it? Obviously the answer is yes, but they won't fix it for one casualty, it will take many more.

just a mom

Seems like you too are helping to sweep the incident under the rug by not saying what school it is. The best way to get something done is to turn up the heat!!! IN this and your case MEDIA EXPOSURE is what needs to get done in order to get these types of issues resolved. If you still want to have something done about th eincident yuo just mentioned, now is the time, before the lights are shut off!!

Faithful_guy
Faithful_guy

You know what, security will never be 100 percent, there is always around it. Can it be prevented? maybe and maybe not, but you can't blame security for everything, Can we learn from this? Yes we can. It maybe crappy way of saying it was a learning experience but it is what it is, we has society must learn from our previous mistakes and try not to repeat the same mistakes. I can't say how her parents feel, but losing someone special hurts regardless son, daughter, mom, dad whoever, we hope and pray for both families, cause im sure the Boys family are hurting too, imagine the guilt they have to go through for rest of their lives. We all should pray for both families. Lets not hate each other love one another support one another.

nONEYA
nONEYA

I'M SORRY TO SAY THAT A SECURITY CHECK WOULD HAVE NOT PREVENTED THIS. IT IS EASY TO GET A KNIFE ON CAMPUS EVEN AFTER GOING THROUGH METAL DETECTORS. IN MY OPINION WHAT WOULD OF POSSIBLY HELPED PREVENT THIS ON CAMPUS MORE THAN A METAL DETECTOR WAS A RESTRAINING ORDER!!! AND IN THIS CASE, IT'S SAD BUT IT SEEMS THERE WAS NEVER ONE FILED.

Hey. There is only so much the school can do. You know what would be very retarded, is that now the family of the girl will more than likely try to sue the LAUSD.

Another thing is that they are painting the girl as an angel. I wonder if she is really the good kid the media is painting a picture of.

It might be like all those other case where a kid is killed and the family comes out and says that the kid was good but then you see pictures of the kid and the kid was a gang member.

Angel..

Ok Ok ENOUGH..U HEARTLESS IDIOT!!! I know members of this family!!! And She/they are NOT Gang Members!!! She came from a Close and Loving Family!! Why can't u let ppl who want 2 give their Condolences do so..why r u here spewing your ignorance and hate for the victim who did what she was suppose to do,and "YES" she was a "Good" Kid..If anything..keep your Heartless comments 2 yourself!! That is so true she was never in a gang I never knew the girl but I saw the way she was stabbed and the way she fell to the ground.. I never wish this for anyone I hope nobody ever sees something like this..you see things like this in the news and think that it could never happen to you but next thing you know your watching a poor innocent girl getting her life taken away from her..my friend George interviewd and almost got his life taken away from him as well and worst of all my sister was right next to her she held her in her arms as she pleaded to survive and live the expression on that poor beautiful girls face will be with me forever .. Nobody should judge or say something that's not even close to the truth so please show respect and know that your not invisible this god forbid can happen to everyone so please take care and don't do things that you know can further lead you to trouble.-Thank you

The girl's reputation or lack of is irrelevant. Nobody has the right to take someone's life. Domestic violence is a cycle. If you are a woman who is in an abusive relationship and who has children please GET OUT! You are teaching your sons to become abusers and teaching your daughters that it is ok to tolerate it. If he hits you once he will hit you again. I was one of the lucky ones. My heart aches for this girl and her family even though I didn't know her.

You must be some ignorant kid with no idea of went wrong here...The case is not about who was what. No one deserves to die in such terrible way. And if you think this girl looks like a gang member you certainly need to get out more. LAUSD should take a threat like any other threat...SERIOUS!!! Who cares if it happens or not, it could have been prevented, they didn't do their job, and hopefully this will make them think twice before not taking any threat serious. I would most certainly sue the school for not taking this threat serious after being warned, what else would you have done? Because you seem to have a better way to make the school understand that there are consequences when they don't take care of things like this...

I hope that kid gets what he deserves, and that is to be taken away from society and live through hell in jail for the rest of his pathetic life.
