Michael Nida: Authorities Admit Wrong Man Fatally Shot by Downey Cops Who Were Looking For Robbery Suspect

Did Downey police shoot the wrong guy at this intersection?
This is a cop's worst nightmare.

Authorities say Downey police fatally shot the wrong man in its pursuit of an armed street- robbery suspect whose description matched the victim's.

The man's family was devastated and sobbing in TV news footage over the weekend.

A strange twist to this saga, however, is that if 31-year-old Michael Nida didn't do it, then why ...

... did he seemingly act suspicious?

It all started early Saturday night when police were responding to calls of an armed robbery suspect and came across Nida, whom cops said "was acting almost like a caged animal," according to what sheriff's Lt. Dave Dolson told KCAL9.

(Downey cops shot him but sheriff's detectives are investigating the incident).

Nida is said to have jaywalked across a busy street as he headed to buy his wife cigarettes at Imperial Highway and Paramount Boulevard, according to KCAL.

Cops actually detained the guy not once but twice and each time he allegedly resisted and took off.

According to KNX 1070 Newsradio each time officers got him there wasn't enough time to pat him down and search him, so there was still some fear that he might have been armed.

The last time Nida ran he was shot, which was at about 7:20 p.m., according to cops.

Terri Teramura, who ID'd herself as Nida's sister, claimed:

... They shot him ... in the back. Five times. Killed him.

No gun was found on Nida.

I guess in L.A., at least the penalty for jay-walking is death. Just like sitting in your SUV ( in YOUR OWN drive-way) at 11:45 pm is a crime punishable by death. If I were armed I'd shoot 1st/. I wouldn't be a statisic, where the police would get a free-pass ( for murdering me) by saying "I though he had a weapon". No need to think/say that you'll KNOW if/when I have a weapon!

hey you fucking tard. it dooesnt matter if he ran or was on drugs or crazed. bottom line was that he posed no threat that warranted to be fatally shot, five times in the back none the less. youre probably an officer your self. a cops worst nightmare....... bull fucking shit. its the family that has to deal with the nightmare or not having him around anymore. i hope he had fun chugging down his egg nog this past christmas.

I'll blame every copy who shoots an unarmed, innocent man every time. He was not high on dope, nor was he crazed out.....is that what you are used to???? He had just left my house to get gas for the car and food for his kids. He ran...people do strange things when they get approached or accused of something they are not guilty of .....especially if they have been signled out before because of racial profiling.  And he was shot in the back, with a machine gun.....and do you see this as OK??  And don't forget "cops are people too....who do stupid things" ...... but they are supposed to be trained ..... but this cop did a stupid thing.....if you don't believe it...get into the cop underground and see what the chatter is about this shooting. Cops need to be held accountable for their actions just like the average citizen.  You sound like you are probably one of those cops who thinks it's ok if a cop does it.  NOT!!!

So you're saying to treat cops like you would any armed criminal. I agree.

I forgot the part of the civil code that states you'll be killed for avoiding the cops. Thank you for your enlightened comments and appreciate your input to this discussion.

To the Nida Family, welcome to the Greater Family of Victims of Police Violence: Christian Portillo, Oscar Grant, Zachary Champommier, Julian Collender, Allan Kephart, DJ Henry, Reggie Doucet, Jr., Kelly Thomas, Doug Zerby, and too many others to fit here. All affected families have bonded together and are ready to support you in your search for justice. You will meet many at next year's National Day of Protest Against Police Brutality sponsored by the October 22 Coalition (ironically, held last weekend). There are many things to be done in these first few days. The most important element/variable is video or audio of the events. As has been seen in nearly all cases where the police get the videos, they are not released (e.g., Kelly Thomas)

Why the hell run if your innocent??? And, twice at that??? NOT a normal response from someone innocent. AND NO GUN? He was not pat searched, so, perhaps weapon used is now elsewhere???

Heraldo, He was innocent!! He had just left my house 20 minutes prior to his death. He never carried so much as a pocket knife....therefore NO weapon. So you think running justifies being shot in the back with a machine gun?? Come on now....have you ever been scared and had to run for your life?  If you do,  I hope it is never with rogue cops or over zealous cops, because then, you too will be shot in the back!!  He had not committed a crime, he had no tickets or outstanding warrants....all he had was a wife waiting for him to come back to the car with her cigarettes and 4 children at home waiting for their father to come back to them, and the over zealous cops took that away from him and them!!

If the police should assume anyone running has a gun then Nida should assume that any cop is a racist willing to kill an unarmed minority.

ummm the robbery suspectwas Black...Michael Nida IS NOT Black!!! Stop believing everything you are told & learn to dig deeper....sheesh cops sure can pull wool over so many naive & gullible individuals eyes!!  What's crazy is ppl really believe these cops approached Nida with respect &  tried to talk to him.....if they ASSumed he was an armed suspect, their approach wouldn't be friendly or calm but yet confrontational & determined..so now it's time to put your thinking caps on & see the true picture...Cops approach him in aggressive manner b/c they ASSume they have the right Armed guy...Nida is in fear for his life given they just MURDERED someone else the week before so he fled....That is called survival instinct.... It's funny ppl ASSume all cops are there to protect & serve.....the crazy thing is we never heard anymore about the real robbery suspect after they Killed the wrong guy so to get back to what u asked..... THESE GUYS ARE STILL RUNNING AROUND DOWNEY..and so the police in this case didn't protect Downey at all..just killed an INNOCENT MAN who was only guilty of running away from some trigger happy cops!

ok im sorry for your loss but you are very wrong.. look at the other way, the guy matched the description of a robbery suspect right? ok thats enough to stop him detain him and investigate if its him or not...i wasnt there but all i can say is that cops get paid to protect and serve the city, if infact that was the suspect and had a gun, and he ran away and got away, it would of been the cops responsibility if someone got shot and killed that night by that suspect that got away... would you really want a guy running around downey with a gun robbing people while your children play in the front yard ? no , but people these days need common sense to stop and talk to the police if asked...especially if you did nothing wrong..
