John & Ken Show to See Major Advertisers Pull Out as a Result of Anti-Immigrant 'Hate,' Says Latino Media Group

John y Ken.
Check out our story about how Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain wants to (jokingly) "electrify" the border fence, here.

Update: NHMC spokeswoman Rosalia Tenorio says the advertisers walking away from John & Ken are Verizon and AT&T Wireless as well as Vons and Ralphs, the last two of which are not currently running spots on the show but have in the past. First posted at 3:38 p.m. on Tuesday.

At least three major advertisers are pulling out of the John & Ken talk show on KFI AM 640 following pressure from the National Hispanic Media Coalition, the org's leader told us today.

The NHMC planned to announced which advertisers have pulled out tomorrow before staging a protest and press conference outside of KFI's Burbank studios Thursday, NHMC president Alex Nogales told the Weekly.

He said many Latinos were fed up with anti-immigrant "hate speech" on the show (the pair also appears regularly on the Los Angeles Times' sister TV station KTLA), considered by many to come from a right-wing perspective that targets conservative white men.

The organization says John & Ken have for years been characterizing Latinos with a broad stroke -- as the source of the state's fiscal and economic problems. The hosts have railed against so-called "anchor babies" -- children born as citizens to illegal immigrant parents.

"They talk about anchor babies and how Latinos are taking away your child's education," Nogales says, adding:

Their audience is out of control. They use the most vulger and most prejudicial language you can imagine. And they [John & Ken] incite it.

NHMC spokeswoman Rosalia Tenorio told us "action" against John & Ken -- some reports have called it a boycott but she says it's a move to bring pressure on advertisers -- has been in the works for months but that a recent incident "triggered" this week's protest:

In their unsuccessful campaign against the California Dream Act that allows undocumented students to receive in-state tuition, John & Ken announced the mobile phone number of immigrants' rights activist Jorge-Mario Cabrera on-air.

Cabrera then received a flurry of filth-mouth feedback. The Los Angeles Times quotes one voicemail message that he transcribed:

Hi, this message is for Mr. Cabrera. Listen, you pile of garbage...You need to pack your [expletive] up and go back to wherever it is you came from. Nobody wants you here. You are invading the legal people that are in this country and ruining this country. I hope you choke in your own vomit.

Nogales says, "It is not an isolated incident -- it's been going on for several years."

We suggested that John & Ken have their audience -- angry white men -- and many Latinos don't listen to them anyway: Why not let the duo have their free speech?

"Do they have First Amendment right," Nogales said. "Yes, but we do too. We have the same right to show our displeasure and demand they will be ousted."

With ominous shades of Gabrielle Giffords, Nogales predicted that John & Ken's criticism of immigrants would someday inspire "the crazies to go out and shoot someone."

He argues that if such ire were aimed at African Americans it wouldn't have been tolerated for so long.

Nogales also threatened the possibility of challenging KFI's FCC license on the grounds that the station, particularly with John & Ken as its major local show, does not serve its L.A. County community, which is half Latino.

We have a email into KFI's corporate parent, radio giant Clear Channel, for its response. (Interestingly the company recently announced that it has partnered up with Latino media behemoth Univision to distribute some of its Spanish-language content).

The NHMC claims that Clear Channel asked for a meeting with the group then pulled out Thursday, hastening its announcement about advertisers tomorrow and subsequent protest and press conference Thursday.

The latter events happen outside the studio building at 3400 W. Olive Ave. starting at 11 a.m. Thursday (the press conference is at 11:30).

regardless of specifics around legal and illegal, john and ken are two more of many republican radio liars and hatemongers who talk and lie and whine as needed by the republican think tanks to sell voter suppression laws along with other garbage for the 1%. they do that on stations licensed to operate in the public interest and use call screening software that allows them to put paid think tank callers at the top of the line to agree with them. there's a good chance some of the commenters on this forum are paid trolls working for the same think tanks, covering for john and ken.

I'm getting sick and tired of Hispanics comparing their plight to that of African Americans.  WE WERE BROUGHT HERE some 500 years ago!  We were enslaved!  We were denied civil rights to the point that you could not marry, go to a restaurant, to the movies...all we could do was to go to church.  We have come again to history...not able to being hired because most Afircan Americans are NOT spanish  speakers, but they are denied jobs.

John and Ken had no right to give out a private citizen's phone number on the air. Isn't that an FCC violation?  They have abused their power and have no business on the air. I hope they get fired.

Well, I don't support any kind of racism, but, to be honest, I kind of agree with J&K, Im Hispanic, Im from the Dominican Republic, and just think it is not fair for us the people who obey and follow the US Laws, it is not fair for my parents and myself, who came to this country THE RIGHT WAY!!!!, going throuh the whole process, Working and paying Taxes just like every person should! sometimes i get mad, because I have been working since I was 17, and just to see that every pennie I pay for taxes goes to those who dont pay crap! they get food stamps, nd all the benefits! while i burn my butt at work! (Im not talking about those babies born here, its not their fault, they didn't choose, to be in that situation but) honestly, I do not support ILEGAL immigrants, IM A IMMIGRANT, BUT LEGAL, (Im becoming a US Citizen next month, Thank God!) because my family and I did things the way they are supposed to be done if they're coming here to find a better life and work hard, they could do the same thing back there. It's just not fair...

And just for the record, peeps, I'm not pro open-border or pro-illegal-immigrant. First of all I don't think it's right that we should have a class of people who are not equally protected under the law yet are relied upon by entire American industries including agriculture.

Secondly I think illegal immigration has hindered the evolution and acceptance of Latinos in this country (as you see here and via John & Ken -- we are associated with "illegal" and thus are always suspected of being criminals and or freeloaders). Where Chinese and Japanese, Irish and Italian were the Mexicans of their day, at one point they essentially stopped coming and were allowed to assimilate. That has happened to a lesser degree for Latinos and thus we have also been harmed by illegal immigration. But ... I am against both b.s. and the hypocrisy of those who would benefit from illegal immigration (if you eat you benefit from the illegal, unprotected, few-rights-having underclass( yet decry it.There.

Dennis. How are Latinos denied the ability to assimilate? I feel they have made the choice  not to assimilate. Or maybe the choice was made for them by political forces working in the legal-illegal immigrant's favor.

umm, actually, you are for illegal immigration dennis... at least be honest and say that you are for open borders... and your attempt to compare mexicans to other immigrants is pathetic.. you see, every other immigrant group took a great risk to travel great distances to this country... when they came to this country, they learned the language, adopted the culture and became law abiding citizens.. now contrast that with the illegals and their anchor babies. they dont speak english (or at least english that is not ghetto), they refuse to be educated, (but they sure know how to apply for all the freebies that they are "entitled" to), they constantly blame their fate in life on other peoples (rather than blaming themselves for having 5  babies by the age of 20)... mexicans will never become a part of this country and they will recognize that no matter how many kids their women drop, they can never overcome the stigma of being a mexican... VIVA LA RAZA, LOSERS!!

Liberals:

You couldn't be more wrong. Mexican immigrants, like all others, learn English at the same rate, want to become educated (haven't you heard of the "Dream Act," or have you been shirking on your John & Ken homework?), want to earn the American dream (why would they work longer and harder for less?), and also take great risks to get here (see the L.A. Times' Pulitzer Prize-winning series turned book 'Enrique's Journey').

You've expressed the anti-Latino ignorance and bigotry that flows through the anti-immigrant movement, and I thank you for once again demonstrating my point.

Ted Plank

Mexican immigrants, whether legal or illegal, have a 50% success / fail rate. Since you're bringing up Asian immigrants (legal or illegal), let's contrast their statistics.

The Los Angeles Unified School District had a 39% graduation rate for Latino students in 2008. That means 61% dropped out. Where do these Latino high school dropouts go? What do they end up doing? Most likely they receive some form of government benefit, and are therefore a net loss. Should we really be allowing in immigrants, 60% of whose children can't even finish high school?

48% of births to Latina mothers in the US last year were to single parent households, ie., the man abandoned his child, and the mother most likely will go on welfare and another kid will grow up in poverty. Just what the US needs more of, these days.

Latinos are 3.3 times more likely to be in prison than white US citizens, and 4.2 times more likely to be in prison for homicide. Latino young men are 20 times more likely to be in a criminal gang than a white young man. Latinos are 2.9 times more likely to die from homicide than whites. Is it fair to say that the US doesn't need another large immigrant group with high crime statistics?

SInce the early 90's, nearly a hundred hospitals have closed in California due to illegal alien expenses driving them into bankruptcy. Is this fair to US citizens who expect to have a hospital in their community?

There are plenty of wonderful Mexican-American citizens, who contribute to the US like other ethnicities of the past. Shouldn't they not have their wages and neighborhoods compromised by cheap labor indentured servants from South of the border who don't play by the same rules?

I'm in the construction industry in Los Angeles. I've heard PLENTY of Mexican-Americans voice bitterness over the wage and job sapping effect of the mojados. Cesar Chavez HATED illegal aliens, because he knew he'd never get decent wages for his workers as long as they kept pouring across the border, blowing the bottom out of the labor market.

Let's have Mexicans and Central Americans emigrate to the US LEGALLY, picking and choosing the immigrants we need. John and Ken are perfectly gracious to legal Latino citizens, who often are the biggest victims of the illegal alien racket.

really? why am i not surprise a mexican is defending another mexican... so, when can we expect to see the glorious age when mexicans are no longer joining gangs, committing crimes, having babies out of wedlock, abusing the welfare system and graduating college?

Ladies and gentlemen, An FYI:  LA city budget as adopted, show revenues have been at an all-time high since 2006.  The LA Chief Financial Officer sent repeated letters, since 2005, to City Hall advising, if they continued to over-spend, they would put the City in a deficit.  While your mayor was promoting his "Shared Sacrifice" he tripled his 'office of the mayor' budget from $8.8M to $26M, as well as sending millions to south of the border.   Your unemployment, and the sky-rocketing taxes/fees, are a product of City Hall's continuing failed policy to serve the public and taxpayer.  I campaigned on repealing the City's business tax, which is driving employers out of town.  Now candidate hopeful's Eric Garcetti and Rick Caruso are now choosing to use, 'repeal the City's business tax.'   Join me in voting out any incumbent or any politically connected candidate.

This article shows the pathetic state Ca. is in. The Latinos think they have all the say and rights. Most of the people that grew up here agree, you have ruined this great state. You come here for free education, free medical, discount DWP bills, food stamps etc. We LEGAL citizens are sick of you, and want you to leave. Enough of your gangs , trash, etc. I am over supporting all the illegals aliens with my taxpayer money.

Thanks for this. I think you prove my point about the anti-Latino bigotry that's behind much of the anti-illegal-immigrant movement. In one paragraph you co-mingle illegals with Latinos, gangs (an American institution if ever there was one) with trash.

Well, let' see--it's Latinos who seem to support illegal immigration--they're the overwhelming majority of people complaining, right? In this story, even??  It's not bigotry if it's factual.  It is possible to resent the burdens of illegal immigration on our infrastructure without being bigots.  I feel the same about illegals from Russia, Armenia, Iceland and Ireland. In Los Angeles, the majority of illegals are "Latino" and the face of the open borders movement is Latino or Hispanic or whatever it's called.  As for people running around pointing their fingers, accusing people of being illegal, that's silly.  Like the $3 lettuce.  And the blueberries disappearing.

Guest

Sorry, I thought the article was about a "Latino Media Group."  Which would suggest that the brouhaha in question was begun by some Latinos.  That plus LaRaza and other Latino groups always pushing for illegals' "rights" (not real civil rights, which I acknowledge for all) but rather the right to immigrate HERE regardless of the law; the right to stay, the right to drive, etc., etc.As for the ethnic composition of illegals, the most recent Pew study I saw said that more than 50% are Mexican and another large chunk is Hispanic but not Mexican.  So I will e-mail J&K and tell them they need to be affirmative action complainers.  I have to go calculate how many Icelandic illegals we have so that J&K can know how many minutes to devote to them.

Dennis Romero
Dennis Romero

Ocra I think it's a grand assumption to say "it's Latinos who seem to support illegal immigration." Where's your data? As I stated above, I am not pro-illegal-immigrant, just pro-human-rights, anti-hypocrisy.

I'm glad you brought up illegals of other stripes. When John & Ken dedicate whole shows to the Russian, Armenian, Icelandic and Irish illegals, please let us know and post here.

While I am not in support of the dream act, the behavior of J & K has been abhorrent for a long time!! I don't agree with many things John & Ken say but this is dangerous to try and CENSOR what they have every right as we do as Americans to say with 1st amendment rights.  Alex Nogales is just mad because KFI are having people call politicians to oppose the Dream Act.  The media fails to report there are 1,000's of Mexican Americans in this City and nation who opposed the Dream Act because it is bias and unfair to the American legal students many who are Mexican American and will not get the perferential treatment illegal immigrant students are receiving.  Take a drive to the Eastside and MacArthur Park Area and see the legal Latino owned businesses that have closed down because they couldn't compete with illegal vendors. Why didn't the National Hispanic Media Coaliton and do anything to help  and protest the firings of good Latina news reporters like Ana Garcia and Kim Baldonado on NBC and Laura Diaz from CBS? His organization didn't say a word yet they get millions in money pretending to help Latinos. IT seems to many they are only helping illegal immigrants now.

ImThatGirl
ImThatGirl

If you don't like John and Ken, don't listen to them. They have a huge audience, so their attitudes and opinions reflects their audience. There are plenty of "left wing" TV and radio hosts who voice opposing opinions, but they're not boycotted or threatened - they're simply ignored. Illegal immigration is an issue that is not going to be resolved until government officials (including our liberal president and his liberal senate) take a stand; that's why this issue is headed to the Supreme Court. Name other countries as generous to illegal immigrants (housing, food, family assistance, education to name a few) as the U.S. Even Mexico fortifies its southern border. A country on the brink of financial disaster, as we are, cannot afford to take care of the world's poor, and has no obligation to do so. California is affected by illegal immigration, whether you want to believe it or not. It's time to re-establish the concept of sovereignty -- a state/country has the right to define itself and establish rules by which it's governed. If you want to come here, do it legally -- don't jump in line ahead of someone who plays by the rules. It's really that simple.

Dennis Romero
Dennis Romero

ImThat:

Good points. I, for one, don't listen. I even tune out of KTLA when they're on there, and I used to work there.

The level of support (housing, food, family assistance) is extremely debatable, and you'll recall the story of Walmart telling its employees (some of whom were "illegal") at one point to seek publicly supported health assistance, so this country's reliance on illegal help and the corporate desire to have taxpapers foot some of the burden so it can find discount help seems well documented.

Whether we are taking "care of the world's poor" is another matter. Many employees, including California's farms (the world's salad bowl, as someone put it, and the largest source of (cheap, affordable) food in America actively seeks illegal immigrant labor and really can't operate as is without it (unless you want to pay $3 for lettuce -- be my guest). So are we taking care of the world's poor or taking advantage of it? Think about it.

Under Obama and Bush, by the way, thousands of border agents have been hired and the border has more security than ever in American history. What's more, because of the economy, illegal immigration is way down. So your political pressure, perhaps, is working.

But here's my conclusion to you: If you want illegals to play by the rules, do us a favor and put your money where your mouth is: Don't buy food grown in California, don't get your car washed, don't get your lawn mowed, don't have your baby taken care of by a nanny of dubious documentation and definitely don't go out to eat in a restaurant in L.A., New York or any other big city because, undoubtedly, if you pay for these things, you're directly supporting the illegal immigration you so decry.

Play by the rules indeed.

-Dennis

I already do most of those things, but mostly for reasons of health and safety.  I would remind you, however, that ASKING for proof of citizenship from most of the individuals you mention is probably illegal because, as you point out, we don't KNOW who's illegal, and god knows we can't ask.And the $3 lettuce argument is economically baseless.  I'm more than happy to pay more for food and less for taxes.  Sign me up.

Liberals:

One more thing: What does an illegal look like? And you're saying anyone who is Latino or Mexican American looks like one simply by sharing ethnic heritage. Would the same apply to any Asian American because there are many Asian immigrants who came here on student visas and then stayed?

As Vanessa Bryant once said via t-shirt: Do I look illegal?

Take care.

Guest
Guest

You seem fixated on "lookiong" illegal, or Mexican, or Latino, or whatever.  Who here has raised that as an issue?

Dennis Romero
Dennis Romero

Malby:

I'm mentioning looks to lead to a point, which is those who say that illegals have ruined L.A. or California see people who look Latino and point the finger because, essentially, there is no way of knowing if someone is inherently "illegal" or not unless their cases have been adjudicated. And thus, the argument that much of John & Ken's banter is really anti immigrant and anti Latino.

And, as I mentioned, there are many Asian illegals, etc, but those certainly don't figure into how the popular imagination, as promoted by John & Ken, has defined in your minds what an illegal is.

Guest
Guest

I think we can define for ourselves what an illegal is, and it's got little to do with "adjudication."  The notion that someone crosses the border or overstays a visa then waits around for a years-long process to DISPROVE that they're entitled to stay here is a major part of the program.  People who want to immigrate legally are stuck because immigration has 15 million illegals here already to deal with.

And I'm not sure how you can have it both ways:  J&K oppose illegal immigration; if Latinos or Mexicans make up the lion's share of illegals, then J&K--by logic--will be opposing the Latino (what does that MEAN, exactly?) and Mexico illegals.  Are you asking J&K to start hassling Asians also?  Because I could swear I've heard them going on about Asian gangs.

Liberals:

Actually you're wrong on a few different levels. For one, it's incorrect to characterize the feelings of all Asian Americans vis-a-vis illegal immigration. You also assume "Mexicans" "condone illegal activity" because the criminal looks like "us."

I assume you mean Latinos and Mexican Americans. Again, it's not fair to say all Latinos in American condone illegal immigration. In fact I wrote a magazine story a few years back (interestingly, it won an award from an organization largely run by Asian Americans at the time) about anti-illegal-immigrant Latinos. I got more negative feedback for that than I'm getting here.

So, Liberals, you're saying all the Korean shop and restaurant owners who hire illegals are opposed to illegal immigrants, for example, or the Chinese Americans in the SGV who hire illegals are also opposed to such.

Huh. Confounding.

Bad advice Dennis-- Number one-- you get paid. It's your job to promote discussion on this blog, or I doubt you'd even respond to drivel. Number two-- you're protected as Press. LE would take quick issue with anyone stalking/harrassing you because you are in the media/propaganda loop. While anyone else not in that sanctified position, would be fair game for either "wacko" side of the issue. Unless someone is running for office, an elected official, or part of the "official" system, putting one's name up for public grabs in a contentious blog is just plain stupid, and it just might harm someone with an identical name.
