L.A. Archbishop: Gays, Abortions Are Ruining American Democracy

Categories: Queer Town, WTF

Archbishop Gomez fights for his right to religious freedom.
Archbishop Jose H. Gomez, head of the Diocese of Los Angeles (the nation's largest), thinks democracy is dead in this country.

Yeah, well, join the club. But where Gomez parts philosophies with Occupy L.A. is who to blame for all this democratic dysfunction: Instead of banksters, the archbishop points to gays and their supporters as the kink in the system. Also, the pro-choice crowd.

How does he figure?

Gomez argues in a column on FirstThings.com that, as LGBT- and birth control-friendly legislation has pushed its way through various voting bodies in America, the right to religious freedom for all has been sacrificed.

An excerpt from his call to arms:

"There is much evidence to suggest that our society no longer values the public role of religion or recognizes the importance of religious freedom as a basic right. As scholars like Harvard's Mary Ann Glendon and Michael Sandel have observed, our courts and government agencies increasingly treat the right to hold and express religious beliefs as only one of many private lifestyle options. And, they observe, this right is often 'trumped' in the face of challenges from competing rights or interests deemed to be more important."

These "competing rights or interests" being, of course, the right to love whomever you please and not be punished for it. Also, the right to say "no" to motherhood, be that through birth control or -- much more drastically -- abortion.

Gomez is convinced that the federal government recently withheld its regular grant to the U.S. bishops' Migration and Refugee Services agency because they refuse to "provide abortions, contraception and sterilizations for the women we serve." He argues the intervention is downright unconstitutional: "This not only violates the consciences of Catholic business owners, it also undermines the religious autonomy of Church employers."

Listen, man -- y'all can keep on obligatorily overpopulating the Earth, if that's what tickles your fancy. But you can't expect the taxpaying whole to keep funding your bias forever.

Bringing us to the gays.

"More recently, the push to legalize 'same-sex marriages' has posed a new set of challenges to our freedoms. Church adoption and foster-care ministries have already been forced to shut down rather than submit to government demands that they place children with same-sex couples or provide benefits for same-sex employees.

And in an ominous development, the U.S. Justice Department went on record this summer as saying that those who defend the traditional definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman are motivated by bias and prejudice.

It's an interesting argument, and one we've personally considered at length. Marriage is a religious institution -- so why should church officials be forced to perform practices they don't believe in?

But until our state is completely separated from our church, and the tradition of two humans forming an official bond finds a new venue across the board, America is technically denying same-sex couples a right enjoyed by the rest of the population. In the end, human rights trump those of a mega-religion to maintain its stronghold on society. As the civility of this country progresses without you, your only option will be to completely cut yourself off from the rest of America, like the Amish or the Mormons.

Gomez' closing argument:

"America's founders understood that our democracy depends on Americans' being moral and virtuous. They knew the best guarantee for this is a civil society in which individuals and religious institutions were free to live, act, and vote according to their values and principles. We need to help our leaders today rediscover the wisdom of America's founding. And we need to help believers once more understand the vital importance of this 'first freedom.' At stake are not just our liberties but also the future character of our democracy. "

Our forefathers? Moral and virtuous? Yeah, they believed in God, but they also believed in slavery. The right to "live, act and vote" according to one's "values and principles" must be secured for all (yes, even those oogie-boogie WeHo flamers) before we start bickering over who gets to do what on government letterhead. Sheesh.

NO one has the right to abolish the civil rights of people of faith  .  NO one has the right to force them to do anything that violates the dictates of their consciences .  We have freedom of religion and speech in this country

We also have supposedly, a democracy full of differing points of view .   Thats what freedom is all about.  Hello.  and people who violate that are totalitarian,  pure and simple.

I fail to see any difference between the extremist, fanatical religionists (one can hardly call them Christian) and the Catholic hierarchy! They seem to be one and the same! One looks at these churches and exclaims, “No wonder Christ hasn’t returned… they’d kill him all over again in three days, not three years!” Sad, sad story. No wonder people leave/have left the church in droves!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a democracy supposed to be based on the majority of views on specific matters? I guess what he really means is, gays & abortion rights people are ruining the chances of HIS views being set forth in a democracy..

Churches should not be tax exempt.  Christianity is ruining this country, not gays and abortions.

Marriage is a religious institution. Monogamy isn't religion specific, but traces to religions who performed the rituals in the past. If gays want to get married, find a religious institution that supports gay marriage. Sexual equality is not human equality. I see no diff between gays, pedophiles and douches who have sex with animals.

Then you are remarkably uninformed regarding sexuality in all species.

Mark, we have an OVERABUNDANCE of remarkably uninformed people regarding sexuality.  Unfortunately, they are married, extremist, fanatical religionists that have no idea what goes on in Christendom OR the real world.  Sad, sad story.

Marriage may have had it's start in religion, but now, it's a legal institution. I am a hetero, legally married woman and an atheist. My marriage is valid everywhere and it had nothing to do with a church of any kind. A justice of the peace performed the ceremony.

Most importantly, if consenting adults are choosing to enter into a legal agreement of any kind, it is no one's business but theirs.

I'm seriously sick of Christian self-righteousness over God's message. Yes it talks about man should only lie with a women, BUT it also talks about 'judge not lest ye be judged'.

I am an ordained CHRISTIAN minister, and I couldn't agree with you more!  You ought to see it from the INSIDE!  It puts Barnum & Bailey to shame. Actually, there ARE religious groups that approve gay marriage--they're called PAGANS.  As a life-long Wiccan Elder, I have married and met countless same-sex couples.  Such marriages are legal in a number of countries as well--including Canada.  I am also an ordained minister, so that sort of tosses your "ideas" out the door, doesn't it?  Come to think of it, back in pre-history there were many "gays" and that were in very powerful positions--such as shamans and medicine men and women.  Same sex relationships have been very common in numerous societies--including ancient Rome and ancient Greece.  But then, those peoples didn't contribute ANYTHING to the world now, did they?

Women are not considered human, much less equals, in many places and most religions, so you're right in that "sexual equality is not human equality."  But that being so, why do you slam people who screw animals--according to the FACT I just stated, those men ARE having sex with animals, since they view women as less than human, or as animals.  Don't believe me?  Go look at the way the taliban and Afghans treat women--and make them wear burquas, which are meant to hide them completely so they can't be seen as human or equals.  The Nazis treated Jewish women better than these guys do!  Personally, I'd rather have sex with an animal than do so with someone as stupid and hateful as you, pal.

Funny--I was just recalling how pedophiles do it for the POWER trip--sexual identity of the adult not being the issue.  I've never heard of a GAY pedo--and that includes those priests who did it to boys.  Those guys have never been said to be gay--a gay RC priest is non-existent according to them.  As for the animal sex thing--go google the topic and see what comes up.  Rarely is it MEN that come up as doing this--it's almost always women doing the deed with animals.  Video at 6 pm!  BTW--I'm a gay guy and the very notion of even thinking of touching or more a person of less than legal age makes me want to throw up.  The only way I'd touch a kid would be to give appropriate care to one as any parent or such would to their child--I have a daughter of my own, btw, of my own blood, and she's grown up hetero and very well balanced.  I'm a science professor, FYI.  As for seeing no difference between those you mentioned--obviously you're a blind moron.  Kindly educate yourself properly about gays, or remove yourself from the gene pool--the rest of us can do without your hatred and lack of intellect.

Excellent post American Freedom. I was about to rant on but what you say sums it all up. Being that America is a democracy, people have right to make their own decisions. Voicing opinions like this child molester arch bishop did is a statement against democracy. The founding fathers of America wanted religion totally separate from state. JX you are an ideological air head. A fetus does not have a right for it is not a human.

OK the church can spout morals when they get ALL the pedophiles out of the church. Until then take your pointy hat and sit on it.

I saw this headline as I was looking for something to read and I had to stop and blog it out. Who the hell are you damn child molesting priests to say gays are ruining anything? God made them to, do you understand that you small minded pigs. I am not gay, but it just makes me mad when anyone says anything about them. I don't like their gay parades, but God made them. As for women having abortions. That's their business. Not some guy on the other side of the country who is going to say she can't have one. This is private business, a woman's decision, no one else's. If you don't like it, then don't have one. End my case. Why should this decision be put into small minded Salem witch hunters hands?

Wow the people who are a part of democracy are ruining democracy? Its typcial of some religious nut to pick an choose the parts of the system they agree with an ignore the rest....

Im not sure about this gay marriage thing though, yes gay people should have all the rights an benefits that "marriage" incurs legally etc but the term marriage is a religious thing, just name it something else an it keeps everyone happy (why would gay people wanna be "married" by a religion that hates them anyway?).

Dont flame me, i think marriage between straight couples is outdated an pointless but whatever floats your boat really.

Someone should ask how many children he raped and how many children he has heard of getting raped by all his colleagues and how they have done whatever they can to hide.  Loser!

And he forgot to add the catholic church has contributed as well since they apparently give their priests free reign to molest little boys. So, catholic church, your argument is invalid.

this is the law:ABORTION IS A CIVIL AND CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT SUPPORTED BY THE RIGHTS TO PRIVACY, THE EQUAL PROTECTION CLAUSE OF 14TH AMENDMENT, AND THE 13TH AMENDMENT.

no human has a right to life or any due process rights by the 14th amendment to use another human's body or body parts AGAINST their will, civil and constitutional rights: that's why you are not force to donate your kidney---the human fetus is no exception; this is protected by the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment.

consensual sex =/= a legal, binding contract for an unwanted fetus to live.

ALL THE REPUBLICANS AND THE CHURCH ARE PRO-LIFE, SCHIZOPHRENIC FASCISTS WHO SUPPORTS REPRODUCTIVE SLAVERY OF AMERICAN FEMALE CITIZENS, WHICH IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL BY THE 13TH AMENDMENT.

You hipocrit. What about the rights of the BABY or what you call fetus. Women have premature babies all the time and THEY LIVE to adulthood. Have you ever seen an abortion. Check out FACES OF DEATH. The doctor tears apart the baby limb from limb. YOUR A SICK PERSON.

Dakotahgeo

Absolutely... let's not keep the child-raping church from raising these young children so more victims are available for the Catholic church (in this case)to rape and molest.  Yes, indeed... anti-abortion indeed!!!
