Medical Marijuana Crackdown in California by Feds Blasted by Golden State Lawmakers Leno, Ammiano

Feds want to tear up this prescription.
A pair of California lawmakers is pushing back against a federal crackdown on medical marijuana dispensaries in the Golden State.

Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) and Assemblyman Tom Ammiano today lashed out against the pronouncement by Department of Justice officials that dispensaries are against the law on a federal level and will be targeted despite medical pot's legal status in California.

Ammiano:

With national polls showing support for marijuana at an all-time high, it defies common sense that the Department of Justice would return to the failed policies of the past. Instead of supporting state efforts to effectively regulate medical marijuana in accordance with Prop 215, the Obama administration seems committed to re-criminalizing it. This destructive attack on medical marijuana patients is a waste of limited law enforcement resources and will cost the state millions in tax revenue and harm countless lives. I urge President Obama to reconsider this bad policy decision and respect California's right to provide medicine to its residents.

There was some conjecture, our own thoughts included, that this federal action was a pre-election move by the Obama administration to appear tough on crime.

However, the Huffington Post reported this week that the decision to declare California's dispensaries illegal happened at DOJ offices in California.

Marijuana remains a top outlaw drug on a federal level.

Leno:

I urge the federal government to stand down in its massive attack on medical marijuana dispensaries, which will have devastating impacts for the state of California. At a time when resources are precious and few, federal officials have chosen to waste time and money in an ambush that will harm countless patients who will no longer be able to safely access doctor-prescribed treatments. Our federal dollars, especially during a down economy, would be better spent on activities and programs that save jobs and help people in need. Instead, this ill-timed offensive would have no positive impacts on our state and would only force more Californians into unemployment.

Godspeed, lawmakers.

The only "gangs" we should be worried about are the govornment and pharmaceuticals and unethical doctors chomping on bit to get their slimy hands all over it.  It's very obvious that it was a HUGE mistake to go the "medical marijuana" route because look how our government has managed to PERVERT that.  End the prohibition now and cut this nonsense now.  VOTE FOR RON PAUL.

Cannabis is a medical miracle waiting to be fullyutilized.  It has been proven to killcancer cells in lab tests without harming the healthy cells present.  http://www.gsalternative.com/2...

Dave Triplett (and others) have used cannabis oil(topically) to cure melanoma as he shows in this short movie.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

Dennis Hill was diagnosed with prostate cancer and usedcannabis oil (by ingestion) to cure himself. http://web.me.com/dbhill/cure/...

Rick Simpson from Canada, who discovered the cannabis oiltreatment, said he has seen hundreds of people over a period of six or sevenyears, including a number of stage 4 cancer patients.  70% of the stage 4 folks recovered, many ofwhom had been told by their doctors that there was nothing else to be done, andthey should go home and get their affairs in order.  The “Run From The Cure” movie is abouthim:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

“What If Cannabis Killed Cancer?”  www.marijuanamovie.org

Please sign one or more of the White House petitionsregarding the cannabis prohibition, go to this link:  https://wwws.whitehouse.gov/pe...

Select the drop-down menu for ‘search’, (on the little graybanner), type in the word ‘cannabis’, and you can review and sign petitions, (especiallythe one calling for clinical trials), and hopefully these can help put an endto this wasteful and harmful prohibition.

President Obama could easily reschedule cannabis out of CSA schedule 1 byexecutive order allowing research in this country.

The prohibition on cannabis has been far more costly thanjust the tax dollars and lives ruined by incarceration.  People are dying for lack of a non-toxic cancercure, and one seems to be clearly within reach.

Dept. ABC are in control of all beverage and liquor license in California (That's a lots of MONEY!!). They can give and take away the ABC license at any times. They have their own sets of law and that can not be disputed. If they can keep the Marijuana illegal, then they have reasons to set entrapment and give out drugs citations. The fines can get VERY BIG!! Since the business owner need the license to operated the business, they have no choice but to paid. If they can not afford to paid the BIG FINE, then they have to closed the business...Marijuana is the easy to detected and find, they were counting on that.

I was a bartender at the Primetime in Hollywood area until a few months ago. I did have some disputed with Dept. ABC and Dept. Homeland Sec., concerning about their tactics of The Drugs operations. They only like the easy catch!! And if they can keep Marijuana outlaw, then they can have many easy catch... They called them self investigators, but it is really the lowest level of spying that you can find... Just log on to their web site, and you know what I am talking about. They were trained and expected to arrest drugs makers and dealers, but most of them had little or none experience with drugs. When they want to invaded Hollywood  and California bars and clubs to give out drugs citations( the fines can get up to 100,000.$), they were looking for easy money. Now, after three years of recruiting and training a big mass of investigators, who are ready to spying on bars, clubs and businesses, they can not allow the opportunity that they have count on to slips away so soon...the BIGGEST Marijuana dealers in Primetime are Government agents! They are known to let drugs "walked" by the pounds, just so they can go after it...I complain about this to LADP Hollywood on Feb,15 2011, and the Officer Rodriguez told me to file the disputed with the Government OIG. The Primetime was a great dive bar, never had any problems until the Government law enforcers decided to conducted their drugs sting operations there. They want to use Primetime as their testing grounds. They have their own "Fast and Furious" operations. If Marijuana is legal, then what are they going to do with all those pounds of weeds they let "walked"?

At this point it looks like we need to come up with more drastic measures in implementing State policies, and start using state resources. Why don't we use our state authorities, Police Officers, Sheriffs, HWY Patrol Officers to do what there title is suppose to be "Protect and Serve". I know I have'nt thought this completely through, but could we not pay our taxes to the state instead of now supporting a fedral government that is broken, and does not support the people of this great country, I mean come on, are we not suppose to be the land of the free? I believe that since California is concidered to be one of the richest states, we should become self sufficient, break away, become a free independent state, away from there tiranny...I believe that if we all come together we can come to a sollution to this dilemna. It's also time to replace the senate with true people who are for the people and not to Corporatism and Capitalism. We need money to run the country not profit from it.....

Jesus said to do unto others as we would have them to do unto us. None of us would want our child thrown in jail with the sexual predators over marijuana. None of us would want to see an older family member’s home confiscated and sold by the police for growing a couple of marijuana plants for their aches and pains. It’s time to stop putting our own family members in jail over marijuana. If ordinary Americans could grow a little marijuana in their own back yards, it would be about as valuable as home-grown tomatoes. Let's put the criminals out of business and get them out of our neighborhoods. Let's let ordinary Americans grow a little marijuana in their own back yards. You can email your Congressperson and Senators at http://www.usa.gov/Contact/Ele... to discuss HR 2306, the bill that would repeal Federal prohibition. And a big THANK YOU to the courageous, freedom loving legislators, governors, and countless others who are working so hard to bring this through! You’re doing a great patriotic service for all of America!

Here's one way that IT IS REALLY WORKING: Arresting the criminals and collecting a fee from registered growers (and bringing in thousands of dollars to support the county budget); what a great plan! This is the way to build a better America! http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/...

Amazing... These guys all sell pot and don't make any money!?! Such selfless people are drawn to the marijuana dispensary business. I am amazed.

Of course people in the medical marijuana industry should have the same rights as the pharmaceutical industry to make a living

The end of federal prohibition is right around the corner.  We just need your voice and every other person that cares about these civil liberties to speak up.  NOW is the time.  Tell the federal government to leave the decisions up to the states.  They will listen or be replaced.Tell your representatives: http://pvox.co/CdiFqYTell the Obama administration: http://wh.gov/gDQ

When I was working with Federal agents, they know I smoke weeds, I never try to hide that from them or anyone else, and they still want to worked with me. It did not bother them when they see a person who's smoking weeds could be for their benefits! The Federal are just want to be acknowledged that they are here, and should be respected...They are the Big Dogs who guard the God's garden. If a person want to come into the God's garden and plan some seeds, then that person better have only good intentions. And have the seeds in one hand and a T-bone steak in the other...

There are many rumors that the recent raids are due to some of the larger dispensaries not playin ball and paying off the DEA

Supposedly if you pay off the right individuals in the DEA you will be give Carte Blanche so long as u operate with some specific guidelines

Some whisper that the payoff money goes to someone's relection fund.

Cue the Dumber then Dumber Dennis Romero article were he gives his negative pessimistic mocking opinion of medical marijuana and attempts to pass it off as journalism by sliding a few limited one sided facts into the article

Duncan Wallace
Duncan Wallace

It certainly seems that he's off his feed based on the article above being practically void of foaming at the mouth hysterical rhetoric.

Get well soon Mr. Romero! There's quite a large number of people who do very much enjoy laughing at you behind your back, and it would be hard to replace you as an object of derision.

Thanks guys. Better to have haters than no audience at all.

ZZardozz

Oh, I don't begrudge Dennis' right to have an anti-cannabis stance.  It should be labeled as opinion, and not as actual news.  But, I notice that a link that I had posted in my last message about US govt. owned patent 6630507, which details the healing power of cannabinoids as Neuroprotectants and Antioxidants" never seemed to show up.   So there's the number, in case links aren't allowed.  Dennis just seems to be willfully ignorant of all these things we mention.

But, at least he doesn't seem to make us read things like "up in smoke", "what are they smoking?", "pipe dream" and "Cheech and Chong" in every paragraph, like some of the other anti-cannabis columnists do.

Coinspinner

Oh you have haters all right, you total fraud of a being.  Your paper is as slanted as it comes, total propaganda horseshit.  We'll win anyway.

ZZardozz

Nahhh... I usually come to your articles through a news aggregation site, like Google News, or somebody posts a link on Facebook.   Then, when I see it's a cannabis article from the LA Weekly, I think, "Well, what will Dennis Romero say this time?", and when I click on the link, it is always an article written by you, that bad mouths medicinal cannabis and all who use it,   Over time, I have seen you insinuate that MMJ collectives sell cartel brick weed, and you repeat the same tripe that the police say it.  It's clear that you have not researched the multitude of medical papers regarding the medical properties of cannabis, and that it causes mutated cells to self destruct, also known as apoptosis.  And, you don't seem to acknowledge that the US govt. owns a patent (6630507) on Cannabinoids as Neuroprotectants and Antioxidants, at the same time they claim that cannabis has no medical use.  But that would punch holes in your allegations.  Just in case you are interested, here is a link to the patent: http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi...

Thanks for all the love peeps.

In response to lamedical: I wrote about it. You guys should read laweekly com slash informer every day. You might have a more informed opinion about me, since you're all so obsessed with me and my thoughts on pot. (Big news today -- the city shut down a dispensary on Skid Row).

In response to lamedical's accusation that I get money from "big pharma liquor," whatever that is, keep smoking that good stuff.

lamedicalmarijuana

Some whisper in the halls of journalism that Dennis receives under the table $$$$$ from big pharma liquor industry cotton industry to write articles which cast medical marijuana in a dubious and mocking light

Notice how Dennis has no logical response for his actions

Dennis R. what do you think about the large group of California Doctors calling for legalization?

ZZardozz

Well, in recent months, you seem to have toned it down a bit, so I've not been commenting.  It is obvious that you have a definite anti-cannabis stance and it comes out in your articles.   Doesn't anybody else at LA Weekly write articles about cannabis?  Why are they always written by YOU?  I notice that the Weekly's sister publications don't try to do a  hatchet job on MMJ.  You are the only one in the bunch who does.  I am really surprised to see such an anti-cannabis opinion in an otherwise progressive publication.
