Occupy L.A. Arrests: Police Detain 10 Protesters in Bank of America Lobby

Update: The protesters were reportedly trying to cash a jumbo check for $673 billion, made out to the "People of California." Photo at bottom of post.

According to a Twitter account representing multiple L.A. workers unions (who are definitely a driving force behind the whole Ocuppy movement), 11 arrests were made today at the Bank of America.

However, LAPD media relations says there were only 10 -- all for "trespassing at B of A." A police spokeswoman says the arrestees were all "very peaceful, very cooperative."

@OccupyLA posted a photo of the LAPD intervention:

The occupation of the Bank of America lobby was the finale to a march that started at California Plaza and is ending -- as we speak -- with a retreat to the L.A. City Hall encampment, where they'll surely be welcomed with open arms by City Councilmembers, who've asked them to stay for "as long as they need." (Occupy L.A.'s kumbayatic relationship with LAPD, however, given these most recent events, might be a little more strained from here on out. Much like the NYPD sitch over on Wall Street. Although the labor unions did later Tweet, "Thank you, LAPD police ... for respecting protestors and those arrested.")

From the protest's event description:

Over 1000 homeowners will be marching through the street into the offices of a major bank and demanding that "Wall Street Banks Pay".

@LALabor claimed there were "thousands" of protesters downtown for today's scheduled march straight into the heart of modern-day darkness -- to the banks, and banksters, that got us into this economic crisis -- though it could be more like upper hundreds.

Pasadena homeowner Rose Gudiel pulled a similar stunt yesterday: a sit-in at the headquarters of mortgage financier Fannie Mae. Just like 10 unlucky Occupy LAers today, Gudiel was arrested, along with her mother and seven supporters. She's since been bailed out, and joined Occupy downtown this morning to keep fighting for her home back.

Update: Here's a close-up of the check, snapped right before the brave 10 were hauled off to the station.

I agree with the blamers! It works in rape cases to blame the victim, and sometimes in robbery. Let's blame the victims in cases of economic rape combined with legal robbery.

HEADLINE LIES: There were NO Occupy LA arrests that day! The people who were arrested were members of a union and a community organizing group ONLY. In fact, there are NO Occupy LA arrests to date that I know of.

I wonder how many of these people voted for obama...

Norman Jeter

I wonder how many of these people took a dump in the morning? Who cares? Stop trying to bring in your own agenda. Obama did not cause the housing crisis. Obama did not cause the Economy to tank in a week. Obama did not Wage multiple wars in multiple countries. Obama did not deregulate all his Fat Cat buddies and give them free reign to do whatever the hell they wanted. That was YOUR old buddy Dubya! Obama, walked into a shitstorm and, unfortunately compromised too much with the moron republicans that got us into this mess in the first place, and so has been unable to clean up the large pile of Gorilla feces that our economy has become thanks to good ole Dubya. So how many times did YOU vote for him? He had 8 years to run us into the ground with war after war, and "do whatever you want" spending policies, and you expect Obama to be able to clean it up in 2 years? Especially with the Racist, fascist, "I Vow to Disagree with EVERYTHING Obama says" teabaggers in office. Fuck You, fuck your republican politics,  and fuck your teabagger buddies that haven't got a clue about anything. Pull your head out of your ass and wake up. The Government is supposed to represent the people it works for.. wait.. what did I say? The government is supposed to work for you? Holy shit! How could we have forgotten that!!!! It's NOT supposed to work for the rich, the elite, or the Corporations! It's supposed to work for and represent the common man!

I was given a chance to buy a house in California 2 years ago and with 4 kids it is something we need but it would have cost $2300 a month rent, we could afford it but just barely so we decided not to do it encase one of us lost our job and what do you know my wife was layer off 7 months later. The 6 of us live in a 2 bed room apartment and it is cramped but we can afford it and don't have to worry about losing our home and being thrown into the street. I feel sorry for the family's that are losing their homes but if you know you can't afford something and then you lose it how in the hell can you be mad. It just shows people don't want to accept responsibility for their actions and blame everybody else.

There is a current story about the Justice Department cracking down on marijuana in California.  If they put as much initiative into prosecuting criminals on Wall Street and Corporate America, I believe we could fix the economic crises we currently face.

Ron

If they taxed marijuana production like any other crop, then that might help fix things as well.

Props to either the staff at the bank or the police for arresting them for "tresspassing". Technically, they wrote out a cheque for an account they didn't own which is fraud. Getting them arrested for tresspassing will likely result in a misdemeanor but will likely just get dropped.

While the protests go on, Obama and Democrats up in Capitol hill are laughing, as they spend this country into oblivion.

Please correct this. No members of Occupy LA were arrested. Those arrested were with an organization called ReFund California. They planned an act of civil disobedience on their own.

Hahaha, love this. Occupy LA has done nothing but impress me. It is nice to see people taking some initiative to get their message out there, and this check is a perfect example.

I LOVE IT!!  IN SOLIDARITY OCCUPY ON  99%

Ruby Rynne

Unions are a driving force behind the Occupy movement? Erm, no, not even remotely. Occupy has made it very clear that the 99% are people, not organisations. No agenda but the people's agenda. If the unions (or other groups) want to march with Occupy, then that's great, but they don't drive Occupy, they don't speak for Occupy and they don't own Occupy. Nor we them. Stop the misinformation please.

Raziel

Thank you for stating that. I've seen so much media trying to name certain groups as the "driving force" behind the movement, even here in Canada. People worldwide are fed up with corporate greed, and we are all saying that enough is enough.

The most effective way of protesting against Bank of America is to close your account and move elsewhere.  That's 'freedom'  in America....to choose whom you wish to do business with.  Well, except for DWP.  Villaraigosa would protest against you, if you threaten to go independently solar, and get off the DWP grid entirely.  He wouldn't stand for that.....he wants your money, no matter how much you conserve.  He could care less, if he's financially killing you.  Remember, 'antonio' handed you a rain-pancho, to buy your vote, not a roll-back on your utility bill.  That's when you know if he really is watching out for you.  Just ask his past relationships.

David_Barron
David_Barron

As I look at those 'Occupy' protesters throughout the country, I see the very 'anti-establishment' protesters of the 60's who are now corrupt bureaucrats destroying our America and our City of Los Angeles.  However, I would suggest that the protesters, simply do their banking with another bank who doesn't charge $5 to use their ATM cards.  And, suggest that protesters turn their 'anger' to LA City Hall who has contributed to our 'highest' unemployment in our City, because of the dismal policies and over-spending by our mayor and city council.  Pay close attention to the city council's actions and see who they give our taxpayer dollars to.  No wonder they have to keep raising our taxes and fees.

Then, there's the two-faced 'antonio' handing out rain-pancho's to the protesters as a gesture of approval of their cause....only to turn and walk away, leaving them to soak in the rain while he heads out to join the very people these protesters hate; 'antonio's' capitalist, billionaire, 'establishment' friends.

you have two feet and  face, go do it yourself, armchair quarterback. So tired of wannabe's saying what should be done instead of getting out there and doing it. The 60s brought a lot of change to civil rights, workers rights, ended the vietnam war, etc. The system has always been corrupt, but the ppl you are talking about aren't corrupt because they protested, they are corrupt despite that. And I'm serious, if those politicians are corrupt like you say, then get a sign and start yelling at them, and ask your pussy friends to come with you, it feels pretty good to yell at corrupt politicians.

David_Barron
David_Barron

Glad to meet your acquaintance Lallardy, I did tell the elected officials in person.  I used the City's adopted budget figures, it was recorded.  City revenue has been at an all time high since 2006.  The City's CFO sent repeated letters to City Hall since 2005, advising; if they continue to over-spend they would put the City in a deficit, and they have.  Hopefully those 'Occupy' protesters will vote the imcumbents out of office so we can get those protesters back to work. Thanks for your participation in discussions.

RE: Rose Gudiel:  speaking of bailouts, seems Fannie Mae will negotiate with her.  Seems this is the New America:  make bad decisions.  If they work out, reap the rewards.  If they crash and burn, blame someone else and demand a bailout.  Kick and scream and whine till you get one.  Seems easier than taking ownership for one's actions.

I'm not saying the banks are angels, but Rose got herself into her own mess.  I mean, with a $2500/mo mortgage, $500/mo property tax at the 35% rule, she should have been making well over $102k.  Sorry, but reps at the EDD don't make that kind of money.  Plus, her loan balance is $408k on a $390k home.  She either put zero down with a negative amortizing loan or took equity out of her house... she was a knuckle-head and she wants to blame it on the banks.  Shameful

Ron
Ron

Those people who take out loans from loan-sharks are knuckle-heads too. However, society is strange in that we send law enforcement after the loan-sharks of organized crime, and send bail-outs to help out the bankers of organized finance, who engage in similar activities.

If bankers want to be treated differently from loan-sharks, then they should exercise more responsibility either in advising applicants (who may be financially naive) or out-right declining applications. (If political agenda has been used to permit insane mortgages, then that needs to be stopped too, right now.)

With great privilege, comes great responsibility. Or there will be a reckoning.

James
James

It's very easy to look at these little stories of personal financial failure and say "see it's her fault."  Sure she's financially insolvent because of actions she took.  Very easy.  But the problem people are protesting is a systematic leeching of value and money by a parasitic finance industry.  They do not make anything, and the people they employ are only proxies for the money they handle.  The money is used to bend and create rules that favor themselves.  This one person may have messed up her financial commitments with regard to her loan, but the finance industry as a whole is messing up the 99%'s financial commitments daily by playing games with our country.

lollardy
lollardy

right blame the dumb consumer who bought into the "American dream" not the mega rich sophisticated lenders that knew precisely what they were doing and did it anyway, only to ask for bailouts when the inevitable happened, that makes sense. No angels indeed. And by the way the reason those houses cost so much was because the banks were inflating a bubble, which means she should never have had to take out a loan that big. Consumers were also being duped into thinking you could never go wrong with a house as an investment by big media. But yeah blame Rose. Stupid woman deserves to be in the gutter with the rest of the refuse, right?

“I think we need to expect a little more from people. I'm sure if someone who could only afford a Toyota heads to the car dealer, and the salesman says, "heck, you can afford this Ferrari! I'll give you financing. Sign here!"

And if that person accepted that deal, couldn't pay, and had the car repo'd.. .you say to yourself, "What a fool!"

But somehow it's different when we're talking houses? People need to be responsible for their financial decisions.”

Ratatouie
Ratatouie

if only it were just that... it's that when the glass/stegal act was repealed, it allowed banks and wallstreet to mingle again. and mingle they did. downright shady gambling. gamble with investments. then asking the govt for huge bailouts. i personally know several finance dudes at merril lynch who went from apartments in the valley to houses on mullholland drive after the 2008 "bust". If politicians would have kept depression legislation in place, the banks and wallstreet would not have been able by law to do what they did. See "Inside Job" for more. Or this guy explains it clearly: http://youtu.be/uZmPWcLQ1Mk
