Occupy L.A.: City Council Resolution Supports Anti-Wall Street Protesters, Lets Them Keep Sleeping on Front Lawn

Councilman Bill Rosendahl bonds with the many characters of Occupy L.A.
Update: "Occupy L.A. Now Allowed to Camp on City Hall Lawn: Why Are Politicians Sucking Up to Protesters?"

Update: Buzzkill. Mayor Villaraigosa doesn't technically have the power to let protesters camp out where Municipal Code says they can't. Details at the bottom.

L.A. City Councilmembers Richard Alarcon and Bill Rosendahl introduced a resolution to support the Occupy L.A. movement today -- a gesture that would essentially attach the City of Los Angeles to protesters' many grievances. The council will take an official vote on the resolution next Tuesday, but judging by their dramatic, heart-wrenched personal responses to occupiers during the meeting's public comment period, no black-sheep councilmember is going to make the dick move of voting 'No' on such a popular cause.

This super feel-good exchange between Occupy L.A. and city government is a perfect depiction of how the West Coast movement differs from its East Coast muse:

New York Mayor Bloomberg is viewing the unrest as a problem, whereas the L.A. City Council is using it as a way to connect with their constituents. And while the NYPD brawls with protesters on Wall Street, the LAPD has been called out by Occupy L.A. for its exceptionally good behavior.

"Stay as long as you need, we're here to support you," City Council President Eric Garcetti told the campers on L.A. City Hall's front lawn yesterday.

Los Angeles Times
Council President Eric Garcetti shows his support.
The council's resolution is much of the same. (Many Tweeters have confused its introduction with its final passage, but in the end, they're probably right.)

"There was an Arab spring," Rosendahl preached at the meeting. "[And now] you're seeing an American autumn."

A member of Occupy L.A. identifying himself as "head of security" stood at the public-comment podium and told his elected officials, "My current address is here, at 200 Spring Street. I no longer have a home. ... And by god, I'm gonna stay here as long as it takes."

Many of the speaker's dripping-wet peers, taking momentary shelter in council chambers, echoed the sentiment.

Councilman Dennis Zine piled onto the lovefest, saying he was "very impressed with [protesters'] legitimacy with concern to their issues" and the way they "presented themselves" before the council. (You know, as opposed the usual batch of "disorderly" madmen that councilmembers normally have to tolerate. Cough cough, Zuma Dogg.)

"And you're out there in the rain, which is miserable," added Rosendahl.

Which gets us to wondering: Maybe the plebeians should try occupying someplace they're a little less welcome? The real occupation today is happening at a big bank CEO's house out in Bel Air.

But here's the resolution, for those who wish to feel a swell of pride for their stand-up city politicians. Courtesy of City Maven.

Occupy-LA-Resolution

More to come as the protest wears on. Especially looking forward to the mayor's highly anticipated appearance at the encampment today. Because if anyone's good for a hypocritical, bleeding-heart solidarity speech, it's L.A. Mayor Antonio "Six Foot Wall" Villaraigosa.

Like the powerful California unions backing Occupy L.A., the City Council has a lot to gain from attaching its name to this grassroots campaign.

Update: An LA Weekly commenter points out, and City News Service confirms, that "police have been enforcing a city ordinance that prevents people from sleeping in city parks, including the lawn of City Hall, at night to move their tents from the lawn to the sidewalk around 10 p.m. and back to the lawn about 6 a.m."

So damn silly. City Councilman Alarcon had requested that Villaraigosa "issue
an executive order preventing Occupy L.A. demonstrators from having to move
their tents," but the mayor's spokesman tells City News he doesn't actually have that authority.

Uh-oh. Looks like the true bureaucratic inefficiencies of our local government -- in the same vein as those currently being protested across the country -- might get in the way of this kumbaya sesh that's been raging between protesters and politicians downtown.

"The mayor does support Occupy L.A. and the right to peaceful assembly,'' the spokesman added, pointing out that Villaraigosa supplied occupiers with 100 ponchos this morning, to protect them from the sudden downpour. Heh.

I dream of a law that states: If you file to run for another elected office before your term is up, you immediately forfeit your present seat....it would be no different than being run over and killed by a High Speed Rail Train. As I look at those 'Occupy' protesters throughout the country, I see the very 'anti-establishment' protesters of the 60's who are now corrupt bureaucrats destroying our America and our City of Los Angeles. Then, there's the two-faced 'antonio' handing out rain-poncho’s to the protesters as a gesture of approval of their cause....only to turn and walk away, leaving them to soak in the rain while he heads out to join the very people these protesters hate; 'antonio's' capitalist, billionaire, 'establishment' friends.

If you don't like what you see in the movement, then join it and let your voice be heard and change it. The strength of the movement is its organic nature and collective voice of the people of this country. We're bringing all of our ideas together and letting them coalesce into one voice, one demand. And we can't get there without your and everyone's input. That is the reason why there is no one single demand yet. The demands are voted on constantly, each night. The ones that are the most important to everyone rise to the top. So get involved and let your voice be heard! We are recreating our democracy for all of us. Be a part of it. Please. The people of this country, and the world, now have the technology and the power to have a true democracry. This could be the birth of something incredible if you just got involved.

Bigomega73, I've been involved.  And, thanks for the invite?  Where can I find you, and how do I recognize you if I stop by?

As I look at those 'Occupy' protesters throughout the country, I see the very 'anti-establishment' protesters of the 60's who are now corrupt bureaucrats destroying our America and our City of Los Angeles.  However, I would suggest that the protesters, simply do their banking with another bank who doesn't charge $5 to use their ATM cards.  And, suggest that protesters turn their 'anger' to LA City Hall who has contributed to our 'highest' unemployment in our City, because of the dismal policies and over-spending by our mayor and city council.  Pay close attention to the city council's actions and see who they give our taxpayer dollars to.  No wonder they have to keep raising our taxes and fees. Then, there's the two-faced 'antonio' handing out rain-pancho's to the protesters as a gesture of approval of their cause....only to turn and walk away, leaving them to soak in the rain while he heads out to join the very people these protesters hate; 'antonio's' capitalist, billionaire, 'establishment' friends.

just exactly what do you  so called  " PROTESTERS "  want ????? WELL, you  surely  DO NOT want a job cause if you did you would be looking for one..and you woulld be taking any job, AND you would be taking any  job you could get, at any amount of pay..Thats what the illegal immigrants do ...and they work hard to make a living and support their families... NO,  you want a free ride, and want the rich to pay your rent, and by your food, and pay your bills..well, thats BS,  it is not the GOVERMENTS  JOB TO TAKE CARE OF YOU, AND ITS NOT THE RICH  EITHER, WE ARE AMERICANS AND WE TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES YOU ALL ARE AN EMBARASSMENT TO  THE UNITED STATES!!.., AND IF YOU  DO NOT LIKE IT HERE THEN   .... GET OUT... AND  MOVE TO A COUNTRY THAT  YOU CAN  GET A FREE RIDE FROM...OH!!!   I guess you can't do that cause ' ALL THOSE COUNTRIES ARE  BROKE, THEY HAVE ...NO MORE MONEY,  AND WHY IS THAT ?????..you all make me sick, you don't know what real hard times really are......

broketheinterweb
broketheinterweb

We want JOBS. That is why we're protesting. The reason it's so hard to find one is because of what we're protesting.

Corporate bailout money was specifically appropriated to create jobs. Have you seen any job growth in the past three years? That's because the bailout money was used for other purposes that led to more profit. Now those very companies are making record profits, and the rest of us are still struggling. How does that happen? That's what we want to see end. We want jobs here in America, so we can all live comfortably again. And we want to do that by working, and being given the opportunities America is so famous for to do our fair share of hard work.

David_Barron
David_Barron

Ms broketheinterweb, if you happen to live in the Los Angeles, area....you can help to begin to create jobs by voting out the imcumbents of LA city council and don't vote for any politically connected candidates for LA Mayor such as Greuel, Garcetti, Perry, Caruso, Zev, or Beutner.

linda young

WELL, if you want jobs, then you shuold take your protest to the WHITE HOUSE lawn , cause that is where it all begins, he was warned that stimulus money ,and the tarp money, would not work, and he wants more money from that new jobs bill he wants, so go figure.. . I do not have the answer, all I know, it is not obama...and some of the prosters want wall street to shut down completly, well if they get there wish, you think times are hard now ,wait to see it then...be careful what you wish for, you just might get it..  i sincerely hope things get better for you, and I hope things get better for us all,.. As long as we dont lose our constitution, and bill of rights, we will be O.K...  GOOD LUCK,and have faith, and get obama out of there and we will be alright, and things will change..take care hope you find a job soon......

David_Barron
David_Barron

Ms Broketheinterweb, perhaps you don't need plane fare to D.C.  What about voting out the incumbents at your local polling booth?

broketheinterweb
broketheinterweb

We'd love to join the protesters in D.C., but plane tickets cost money that we don't have, unfortunately. But that is where the problem lies. A variety of bad legislation by our lawmakers caused this to happen. Many of them have been bought out by companies who can afford to pay them enough campaign money to get laws that favor their cause instead of what the people want. The lawmakers shouldn't take bribes, but they do, and the companies shouldn't abuse that, but they're being allowed to. That leaves us with no  power in the political process. If voting doesn't help because all the politicians are on the money side, then the only democratic process we have left is protesting. It isn't ideal, but it's all we've got, and we hope to get the support from other Americans who agree. We should have respect for our constitution, and end the bribery. I wish corporations who abused their bailout funds would be held accountable for misappropriating the funds they were given, but the fact is, they've proven they're not to be trusted. Stimulus money along with the tax cuts they're given aren't being used to give Americans jobs, and that's clear by the numbers.Power to the people -- it's only democratic! :) Thanks.

Not even Bernard "nine lives" Parks, or Dennis "jack-boot" Zine wiil risk another multi-million dollar payout for a "What the F-k?" May Day fiasco. Meanwhile all the "Brown" suits are posturing for another re-election or newly elected position. Even Gil's-boy Garcetti entered the mix. The only thing missing is Gloria Allred blowing smoke up Jessie Jackson's ass while Al Sharpton uploads it to U-tube for the "viral" effect. The city's coffers are drained, and a repeat of LA 92 is not in the works, so protest to your heart's content. LA is open for conquest. Next up-- complimentary Andy Gumps followed by Roach Coaches-- oops-- I mean gourmet food trucks.

"for many of the young people down there, this is their first political action and they are learning as they go. The City Council is supporting home giving them a safe place to speak out and camp." The city council meetings and their votes are NOT summer camp, that's for sure. THIS WHOLE Occupy effort is an attempt to point the finger AWAY from the TRUE CULPRITS in L.A.,,,L.A. City Hall! Billions lost in PENSION CRONY FRAUD by Villar Pension commisoners (in prison, or stepped down). Non-profit pilfers. Fed Stim money wasted. Affordable housing not built. There's a REAON FBI is investigating City Hall in MANY departments. THEY BLEW AND PILFERED THE MONEY (FRAUD, WASTE & ABUSE). OCCUPY KIDDIES...you have a LONG checklist, right there in that big building you camp in front of, before you need to fly to NYC to blame your jobless/homeless situation.

ASIANS CAN ACTUALLY READ MINDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!they can hear and see what your visually thinkingthis is the complete total truth

the reason alot of asians have completely expressionless faces, only associate with asians and dont associate with non asians very much is to avoid accidentally revealing that they can read read minds, if all over a billion asians were to show facial expressions all the time just as much as non asians, associate with non asians much more, and be much more friendly and talkative, then alot of them might accidentally reveal that they can read minds by accidentally showing a facial expression or dirty look when someone thinks, or visually pictures something in their mind they dont like or find astonishing or funny, and if they were all to associate with non asians alot more there would be alot more people around for them to accidentally show facial expressions when those other people think things they dont like etc, so they only associate with asians so there wont be anyone around for them to see that and have any accidents happen in the first place

think about it, its not normal how alot of them act, and the entire way they act is all to hide their mind reading abilities, it makes perfect sense to do all of that to hide that they can read minds, because all of that is the perfect way to do it!every single asian on the planet is hiding their mind reading abilities, they will lie about having mind reading abilities forever!because they value hiding their mind reading abilities more then their own lives!thats why nobody knows about it!

try thinking, best yet visually picturing in your mind something something absolutely crazy as you possibly can when you are around asians, and try looking for asians who give people particular looks, especially dirty looks for what appears to be for completely no reason, that is them giving people looks when they hear and visually see someone thinking something they dont like, find funny or astonishingit still happens despite a large number of them having completely expressionless faces all the time, it would just happen alot more if none of them had completely expressionless faces all the time, its not uncommon!

i know this sounds crazy, impossible, and completely unbelievable, BUT IT ISNT CRAZY WHEN ITS TRUE

the reason you think this truly is crazy, impossible and unbelieveable is because our society has propagandized people into believing that nothing extra ordinary is real and that is really is impossible, and that its crazy to think that its true that people can read minds, all just to cover up that asians can read minds! who says that cant exist? the people who have mind reading abilities who are trying to cover it up!

you have to spread the message!!!!the world has to know about this!!!!

Did Zine mention my name, or did you just squeeze it in and have to get my name mixed up in this misguided Occupy effort. Alarcon supports it. That should say enough. And for the record, how ever I behave, I never broke Federal law. Can't say that about Council in their behavior in dealing with Zuma Dogg. So who's the bad guy? Newt Gingrich sent me a tweet, last week in response to my "Quality & Productivity" article, and got a facebook message from Wilmington, NC reader, claiming ZD is, "a hero to our nation and the People." City Hall is under widespread FBI probe, and just destroyed character and fabric of city for generations. I wish you could have used JOHN WALSH to make your point. UGH!

Simone's shortcoming is a misunderstanding of audience. Calling OccupyLA a "kumbaya sesh" assumes the audience will be laughing at the movement. Rather, about 99% of us approve of what's going on locally and nationwide. Simone may do better with a "creative writing" platform. Just sayin'...

I must be part of the 1% because I don't approve of what is being protested for.Protest all you want, but I don't agree with any of the goals. The city council resolution calls for more than sleeping on a lawn.It stands beside the protesters and their lenin like demands.

What -- like an end to corporate financial control of both parties' politics? I want you to look at this:"According to the C.I.A. World Fact Book, the United States Gini coefficient, which is used to measure inequality, is higher than that of Egypt’s pre-Revolution."https://www.cia.gov/library/pu...

We are the 39th worst in the world. Just between Bulgaria and Cameroon. Proud of that?

Sue Basko

I have been very active in assisting with Occupy LA, and I think "kumbaya sesh" is accurate and hilarious.   That does not detract from the serious goals.

" Rather, about 99% of us approve of what's going on locally and nationwide."

Then please point to a source in which this was objectively and scientifically tallied.

Because as it is, you, along with everyone else parroting this "99%" nonsense are just engaging in collectivist propaganda to give off the illusion that everybody in America just so happens to be united behind YOUR ideals and YOUR beliefs. Which is complete BS, especially when you look at the psychotic demands these people are issuing.

Mike Jonesian

CODY: You are correct, I stand corrected. I now see the fascist way of thinking I was engaging in. It just seems that unless someone were filthy rich, they would agree with the goals of this movement.

I do not like your tone either. for many of the young people down there, this is their first political action and they are learning as they go. The City Council is supporting home giving them a safe place to speak out and camp. I just returned from dropping off a pot a chili and was amazed at their organization and determination -- even in the rain. This is a growing movement across the nation that should be taken seriously. It is hard enough with Fox putting them down-- I expected more from the LA Weekly.

please change headline to:  Lets Them Sleep on Front Lawn - protesters have not been sleeping on lawn, thats part of what the resolution call for.

LA is broke because of the policies of the Mayor, City Council and the unions. Hypocrites who should look into the mirror before they try to hijack a movement that is protesting present economic conditions which in LA have been caused by these bodies.

LA

I don't like your tone, Simone Wilson. Regardless if the City Council have their own agenda, in letting these protestors do their thing, it is still a GOOD thing. They are doing it peacefully, and the City Council are being a good example of how a city SHOULD handle a protest.
