Updated at the bottom: The suspect has been identified in reports. First posted at 3:29 p.m.

A man opened fire at a beauty salon on Seal Beach this afternoon, killing eight six and wounding one three others, authorities said.

Police first received calls of shots fired about 1:21 p.m. at Salon Meritage in the 500 block of Pacific Coast Highway, cops said.

Sgt. Steve Bowles of the Seal Beach Police Department told reporters in a news conference aired at KNX 1070 Newsradio that a suspect was nabbed peacefully in a traffic stop about a half mile from the salon.

He said all the "stations" at the salon appeared to be occupied when shooting broke out and that at least one of the casualties was found outside the business.

The suspect was not identified.

Motive wasn't clear but the sergeant said investigators were looking at possible personal relationships between the gunman and any of the victims. He made it sound like it wasn't a random act of violence.

Two men and a 73-year-old woman comprised the wounded who were sent to hospitals, according to City News Service. The three were reported to be in critical condition. [Two died, see below].

[Added]: ABC7 reports that a suspect was in a white Toyota Tundra pickup truck when cops made an arrest. The station says the suspect was wearing a body armor vest, military-type pants and extra ammo clips at his side.

ABC7 said "multiple" weapons might have been recovered by police.

Bowles told reporters that the northern Orange County beach community usually had "zero" homicides most years and that this was very unusual for the mostly residential town.

In fact he said several nearby police agencies, including Huntington Beach's, were helping out with the response to the shooting.

One witness told ABC7 that a suspect approached the salon from outside and immediately opened fire on a man at point blank range before entering.

[Added No. 2]: Outlets, including the Los Angeles Times, stated that one of the dead might be the salon owner.

Bowles told reporters victims were found "throughout the entire salon." He added:

It appears that the salon was busy at the time and it appears almost every hair station, if you will, was occupied.

The Daily News has a photo gallery capturing some of the scenes after the violence, here.

[Update]: Bowles told reporters that "it appears that two of the three that were transported to a local hospital have died of their injuries."

That brings the number of fatalities to 8.

The surviving victim was said to be in critical condition.

ABC7 reported that the victim was being treated at Long Beach Memorial Hospital, where two other critical victims apparently died.

[Added]: A woman inside the salon told the Orange County Register that a man walked up to a stylist and opened fire. She said she thought it was a "Halloween prank" at first.

In fact, our sister paper OC Weekly reports that some neighbors thought the shots were part of a nearby taping of a CSI TV episode.

Meanwhile the woman, who was identified by the Register only as Cindy, said the man then shot a woman getting a shampoo before firing at a colorist:

I just kept hearing boom, boom, boom, boom. I ran out. I didn't see his face. I just saw the gun in his hand and him shoot anybody.

The paper notes that the shooting would rank as one of the worst mass-killings in Orange County history:

The worst mass-killing in Orange County's history before Wednesday was in 1976, when Edward Charles Allaway, at Cal State Fullerton, shot nine people and killed seven.

A witness told ABC7 that the shooter might have been in a child custody dispute with one of the stylists.

[Update No. 2]: Our sister publication OC Weekly ID'd the suspect as Scott DeKraii of Huntington Beach, a man who reportedly works in the sports fishing industry.

Lidia Sosa, who used to work at the salon, told reporters that the suspect and his ex-wife were in the middle of a custody battle and that she was fatally shot in the rampage.

DeKraii was said to live with a new wife and a son from a different marriage, according CBS2. Neighbors said he is "mild-mannered."

The Times reported Randy Fannin, the owner of the shop, also died in the shooting.

In my view, Scott DeKraii was brainwashed by Gulag KGB agents who use one total mind control method. The brainwashed will execute any order after being brainwashed. This is a form of terrorism rather than a crime. There are several such incidents, similar to Seal Beach Massacre, discussed on this page Mind Control. The URL weblink is http://www.normalbreathing.com... .If this is the case, Scott DeKraii is innocent since nearly anyone would do the same after being brainwashed. I know about abilities of Gulag KGB agents due to my personal experience many years ago.

Ok all of you. I KNOW THIS MAN, I WAS INVOLVED IN THE FATAL ACCIDENT that claimed our co-worker Piper Cameron and then the lined came and got Scotty's Leg. I was holding the line. My life has been RUINED ever since. So just sit back and think about how I feel. I am in a world of confusion, PTSD, depression, to think that I might been somewhat responsible for this... I can't do anything anymore but hide in my bed. How about that for a comment. So shove your comments up your...

I think I know how this guy felt is all I can say.  I do not condone his actions and am really sorry about the innocent victims involved.  I have been there once myself though.  You can only tear the heart in so many ways until it does become almost insane.  I don't know what went through this mans mind but I do have an idea.  She is "Dead".  So are a lot of innocent bystanders who had nothing to do with this relationship.  How very sad.  I don't feel sorry for her though.  She pushed someone to their absolute limit and, it shows.  I'll let God deal with it all.

Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. James 4:1-3

“God resists the proud,      But gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. James 4:8

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

The passage from James was addressed to the faithful (read the beginning of the book).

Any indication that applies to those in the salon shooting? You trying to EVANGELIZE over a mass-murder?  Lord help you. I'm a Christian (since adulthood) woman who married an abuser, who used religion as a cover, and it took me years to get out.  After I get out, the family law courts -- which have extreme religious influences behind them these days, in the form of the "marriage" movement, thanks to George Bush, his Moonie Connection, and a White House Executive Order welcoming in the very institutions that covered up violence towards women in marriage, and child abuse by priests -- into getting PAID to proliferate.Per John 8, In Jesus' time a woman allegedly caught in adultery (although somehow no man perpetrating was caught by the religious voyeurs who caught her, or God knows what).   They didn't care about adultery, they were just trying to trap Jesus, too -- because if he saved her life, he'd have to break the law which says, adultery = death.  In essence, they were willing murderers (per the gospel, anyhow).  He saw through it.In John 4, a woman at the well has been characterized for centuries as a prostitute, yet one of the deepest sayings in the NT was prompted by her continuing to ask questions about salvation, and worship -- of a stranger.  She was a Samaritan, and from this encounter, we get:  "God is spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."I have sat in a Pentecostal church (didn't come back) and heard the baby-boomer aged preacher talk about her life of sin, and how she was used to being used by men, but now she was going to be "used by Jesus" -- and skip the central part.  The churches and faith institutions of these days have the same issues the ones did in Jesus' time and aren't much different.  They care a LOT more about their relationships with the prevailing government (right now, this is a good one, they're getting millions of grants to propagate whatever doctrine suits them:  abstinence, marriage, fatherhood, whatever) most of which boil down to -- beating on one's wife is not really a crime, the thing is to maintain the family.

Guess how I know this?  The word "sanctuary" should be applied in reverse.  It may work for birds and other wildlife, but doesn't apply anymore to women of faith AND backbone.  They can go take a hike, and wife-assaulters will not be held accountable to any human laws, is the general practice.  WHY?  Generally, money, and warm bodies in the ranks that give more of it.

That's to whom you should be addressing the sentiment in James. It should be sent to pastors, along with the news headlines, including one from my area, where a woman was shot to death in a church parking lot on a weekday morning after filing a restraining order, after years of abuse (Tonya McCall).

I distinguish faith from nonprofit corporations of a religious nature.  One has outside show, the other one is known by its works (also from the book of James), without the advance hired heraldry proclaiming how great it is.  And when James proclaimed "Woe to you" in this book he was talking to the chosen.

You may be a crazy old preacher, but certainly not harmless.  (Time for a timeout on my part here....)

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.Blessed are those who mourn,For they shall be comforted."

"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake."

Thank you for blessing me.

Your bitter rant toward "the church" doesn't change the gospel truth: All murderous rage results from frustrated, carnal desire, whether it is the frustrated passions of an atheist or a "church member." Therefore it is an accurate description of the heart of this shooter.

You get no sympathy for your bitter, long-winded rant. We all have our tale of woe and yes, there is much wickedness done in the name of God. Well quit throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Jesus died for you and me despite the fact that we deserve judgment and not mercy.

And yes, human tragedy begs for attention from God and for divine hope so I will evangelize. People need comfort from God, TRUTHFUL messages on sin so they can repent and believe the Gospel and they don't need your tired adolescent attack on FAITH.

Praying for you, for Seal Beach and all America tonight.

I feel absolutely terrible for the victims and their loved ones.  I am also so very angry at this pathetic excuse of a human being for being so selfish and self-centered.  8 more victims murdered and countless number of lives (not to mention the lives of his own children) destroyed as a result of domestic violence.  I think police brutality would have been more than appropriate in this case.

AAhh !! that Great American Dream...what happened to it or was it ever there to begin with . An illusion  is it ? , with Greed , Murder, Hypocrisy and Profit before people. Very very sorry for those poor people murdered in Seal Beach. Since 9/11 more than 135,000 residents in America have been murdered, Why don't the politicians in Washington stop that instead of fabricating propaganda and fear for the masses, about terrorists. Our back yards hold our American terrorists all home grown. There is no WALL of remembrance for those 135,000 murdered victims, Why . Are they less important than other victims or military. I think not...

Really? What a ridiculous perspective. Very sorry for the victims of this senseless killing. Worst of all is the poor child who will now have no parents. What the hell is wrong with people?
