Occupy Wall Street and the Tea Party: The Search For Common Ground

Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street slogans. Both like yellow.
Two and a half years ago, the streets overflowed with Tea Party demonstrators. Nowadays, the streets are filled with the ranks of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

At Think Progress, Lee Fang argues that the OWSers are the "true" heirs of the original Tea Party, and that the modern Tea Partiers are impostors.

But that overlooks how much both modern movements have in common. Both are reactions to the recession, and to the sense that the economy is rigged in favor of someone else. After the jump, we'll show the eerie similarities with an easy-to-read chart.

Here's a series of questions, with answers from the Tea Party and from Occupy Wall Street.

See? More similarities than you'd think.

The Tea Party isn't paying anyone to attend their events, but there are already documented cases of the Occupy group doing so.  That makes the Occupy group Astro Turf.  The Tea Party wants an end to government intervention in their everyday lives and a return to the Constitution.  They want an end to out of control spending and entitlements.  The Occupy group wants the government to provide them with everything and regulate everyone.  And yes the Tea party is protesting taxation, 47% of the public doesn't pay any.  The tables need to be squared so that all pay something.  You are right about goverment being hijacked by corporations.  President Obama received the most money, EVER, from Walled Street.

Speaking from down in the southern hemisphere, I just can't figure out you Americans. Your economy is in the toilet and all you seem capable of doing is slagging each other off. It's just become another shouting fest: Tea Party vs Occupy - and to what purpose? You all live in the same country and breathe the same air, so why all the hate? Do you need someone to despise in order to bolster your self-esteem? Could either side possibly admit that the other has some good points, and maybe find a common way to move forward? Your politicians are no better - they seem more concerned about scoring points for next year's elections than actually seeking a way out of the mess. Sure, your Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, but what good does it do when all it seems to achieve is a lot of hot air? We used to look up to America, but now we think it's a joke, and the comments I see flying around these forums do nothing to convince me otherwise.

The OWS crowd are mislead of course, they should be chanting: "No more crimes against capitalism", crimes many firms on WS can be accused of, including those "too big to fail". Cain may come to regret his harsh words against OWS; they and the Tea Party have many common grievances. Paul Ryan is already distancing himself from Cain on this one.

Unlike the author of this post, I actually went to the Tea Party websites to see what they are about. No mention of underemployed. No mention of personal debt or mortgage debt. No mention of "moochers" being rewarded. No mention of the government representing "moochers". The Tea Party is about limited government and adherence to the constitution. I'm sure these concepts are beyond the grasp of the author.

A cute attempt at humor but the two groups couldn't be farther apart in both ideology and appearance.

A big difference that you can't ignore is the Tea Party is an astroturf organization funded by the Koch Bros, while Occupy Wall Street is a truly grassroots movement.

And BTW, the original Boston Tea Party were not protesting taxation, as the present day Tea Partyists would have one believe, but taxation without representation, which is a problem now as the government has been highjacked by corporate money and no longer represents the people, but still taxes them.

You obviously know NOTHING about the Tea Party movement.  Where do you get your info? Keith Olbermann?

Well toutvabien ... How about some proof to back up your spew that " the Tea Party is an astroturf organization funded by the Koch Bros"?  And while you are at it, check and see how many unions (spelled AstroTurf) are supporting the "gimme Free Stuff" crowd.

Thanks for the laugh though "while Occupy Wall Street is a truly grassroots movement."

Say Hi to Van Jones for me wouldja ...

FYItoutvabien ... The front page of the http://occupywallst.org/ proudly announces that numerous union groups will be present in New York today to join demonstrators in marches taking place this afternoon.

“Together we will protest this great injustice. We stand in solidarity with the honest workers of….MoveOn.org,” states the website, as well as listing numerous other organizations.

Truly ASTROTURF!!!

Commutalism is a new form of Democracy without politiciansand through the use of internet.

Communism and more recently even Capitalism have both failed as systems ofgovernment because of the corruption and not because those Ideals were notvalid.

In a new and long lasting form of government Trust can no longer be one of itscomponents. All efforts should be made to form a new type of government withnew mechanisms that will not require the element of Trust to guarantee that thewill of the majority will always be reflected in the laws of that government. This will be a system with always new mechanisms to improve in time the alreadyexisting possibility of a government built through the Internet.
