Three West Hollywood Gay Bashings Reported in One Week

wehoflags2.jpeg
WeHo News
It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows in West Hollywood last week.
Updated after the jump: West Hollywood Mayor John Duran pretends nothing is wrong.

Originally posted October 26 at 11 a.m.

A recent string of violent attacks on gay men in West Hollywood has L.A.'s Boystown whispering "hate crime."

Though they've gotten no love from major media outlets, three men who claim to have been beaten in the streets of WeHo between October 19 and October 22 feel they were targeted based on their sexual preference orientation.

Gayborhood blog WeHo Confidential has their stories:

WeHo Confidential
Billy Mandrick
First, on the night of Tuesday the 18th, clubgoer Billy Mandrick says he was "brutally attacked and robbed" after a night out at Mother Lode. According to Mandrick, his assailant approached him near Santa Monica Boulevard and Robertson -- right at the crux of the WeHo bar scene -- and yelled, "Hey faggot, what are you doing out here so late?" (Though the answer to that seems fairly obvious.) From WeHo Confidential:

Billy tried to ignore the man and headed for the corner to cross the street. The man came closer, asking him where he was going and why he was out, repeatedly calling him a "fucking faggot". Billy began backing away from the man, apologizing for offending him.

At that point the hater sucker punched Billy in the face, leaving a nasty bruise next to his eye, and continued with two or three more punches until Billy fell down at the curb. The attacker kicked Billy in the chest once and then Billy heard a second man say, "Thats enough, leave the fuckin' queen alone, let's go." The attacker grabbed Billy's cell phone and wallet and vanished.

The victim describes his basher as a six-foot-tall white man with a shaved head, around 180 pounds, wearing a dark polo shirt and jeans.

Kasey Mahaffy
Just the next night, on Wednesday, October 19, Kasey Mahaffy describes an even more terrifying scene involving a similar-looking attacker (same height, same weight, light eyes, shaved blonde hair, late 20s, "wearing a black hoodie and cream plaid shorts"). The incident occurred about a mile and a half northwest, at Fountain and Laurel. He says he was leaving his local corner store around 7:15 p.m. with "some beer and some snacks" when a blue Nissan Versa pulled into a small driveway in front of him, blocking his path home.

At that point, Mahaffy says four "Abercrombie-clad frat boys" got out of the car and started hassling him about his groceries, but soon sped off.

However, just as he was about to arrive at his house:

then i noticed a guy walking towards me on the sidewalk - normal weho looking dude - in a black hoodie and cream plaid shorts. as he approached me i made eye contact, as i often do. he ripped back his hood, screamed something unintelligible, and punched me in the throat. 3 times. so much so that i landed in the middle of traffic on fountain ave. long story short i ended up inexplicable bent over a civilian's car, getting the shit beat out of me by a complete stranger. he hit my chest, my head, my ear, my cheek, my jaw. and since my arms were full of groceries, they were occupied and i couldn't defend myself. during the assault i kept thinking to myself all these ironic thoughts like , "oh my god. i can't believe this is happening. i'm a fucking HATE CRIME VICTIM?! no fucking way. not my story."

but then i came to and he had run off. gotten about 13 punches in. my groceries peppering fountain ave and my bottle of wine smashed on the hood of some innocent old corolla. "are you alright?" the driver asked. i picked up my groceries on the street. said yes, and that i think i was just assaulted. everyone nodded and sped off to wherever they were headed, and i was left alone.

Most disconcertingly, Mahaffy claims sheriff's deputies from the West Hollywood station acted "insensitive -- cavalier even" and told him there was "nothing they could do," despite his detailed suspect and vehicle descriptions.

Kyan Loredo via Facebook
Kyan Loredo
The final recorded attack went down on October 22, according to WeHo Confidential. Micky's employee Kyan Loredo says he was jumped about 7 p.m. after a voice behind him said, "Don't turn around." The details:

Thinking a friend was playing a joke Kyan turned around and was immediately bashed over the head with the barrel of a gun. The attacker robbed Kyan of his phone and his cash ($1) and vanished, leaving Kyan scared, in shock and in tears.

The guy with the gun is described as a five-foor-10-inch black man with cornrows, a hoodie and dark pants. There's no direct evidence the attack was related to the fact Loredo is gay -- and it technically occurred on the Los Angeles side of the street, in LAPD territory -- but its proximity in time and place to the October 19 beating is enough to raise a red flag.

Like Mahaffy, Loredo says the LAPD officer who took down his report acted "cavalier and indifferent, laughing, joking and distracted from the urgent situation."

We're contacting the WeHo sheriff and LAPD Hollywood Division for comment.

Update: CBS2 picked up on two of the gay-bashing reports last night.

West Hollywood Mayor John Duran, in a shocking (and ass-covering) attempt to maintain his city's glittery, happy-go-lucky veneer, told CBS2 reporters that sheriff's officials "hesitate right now to call these incidents hate crimes, officially."

Instead of offering his support or showing concern, Duran downplayed the disconcerting spike in violence -- even seemed to use the opportunity to brag about the town's thriving economy.

"In West Hollywood, actually, hate crimes are down for the year. So we're not treating this as a spike or anything out of the ordinary," he said. And later: "We live in a city renowned for its nightlife. When it's nighttime, you have to be careful."

Uh. Thanks, mom. But these really didn't sound like your average bar brawls.

Patrick Range McDonald, the award-winning LA Weekly reporter behind some of the most hard-hitting journalism ever to hit West Hollywood, says he's appalled by Duran's demeanor:

"In other words, he's more concerned about media coverage making WeHo looking unsafe because it may hurt nightlife business. It's incredible. He sounded like an insensitive straight politician who has no clue -- the kind of person he would have protested back in the '80s when he was an activist."

On NBC4, which also picked up the story, Duran added, "This is what happens when people try to do investigations through social media. They know somebody who knows somebody and before you know it, they say it's a rash of gay beatings going on. It's not true."

Thus rounding out this utterly clueless performance from a guy we honestly expected more out of. (More, at least, than notoriously out-of-touch dictator John Heilman, who preceded Duran.)

Mayor dearest: Just because you don't know how to use Twitter, doesn't mean it's the root of all lies. We're perfectly aware of the wildfire dangers of social media, but in a case like this, we have three very real people who were mugged and beaten in the same small hood in a matter of days. Social media has only made the community more aware of their suffering -- a lot more than we can say for local government and law enforcement.

And by the way. WeHo Confidential, the blog who initially aired the bashings, is run by Lucas John, a candidate in the last West Hollywood City Council election. Thanks, Lucas, for utilizing 21st-century tools to give your would-be constituents a voice and a sense of safety, despite the fact that the incumbency machine got the better of you last March.

Here's the latest from WeHo Confidential:

In an interview with Frontiers LA, a gay blog which deletes comments on their site that conflict with the editors hidden agendas, Sgt. Frambles claimed that there was "no evidence of gay bashing in either case" in the attacks reported by our website.

Yesterday afternoon Mayor John Duran allegedly held an emergency/secret meeting with bar owners & the Weho Sheriff's Dept. to implement "damage mitigation" only to be greeted by camera crews when the secret meeting adjourned.

Socially mediate this, Duran.

The Sheriff Department sucks.  I was brutally attacked,  had, still have the proof, and they refuse not only to recognize it, but to investigate it at all.  The West Hollywood Sheriff's Department as well as John Duran and Abbe Land are cowards.  As long as they have money, they will not do anything about anything.  Take that away, or threaten to and watch what happens to them.  Cowards.  I have been followed by this "christian" hate group that say they are performing God's Law suit, they have painted the word evil on the wall at my work, as well as the words "look up".  I have resorted to private investigation because these people simply do not care at all.  They attack those of us who are not the strongest.  If anyone in this town would like to help put these people behind bars, I have the proof, and I also have the proof that the Sheriffs Department refused to investigate it.

Hi Simone, I guess this is a blog and not a news story, but the editorializing doesn't you well. (Comments such as "sexual preferenceorientation." and "Though the answer to that seems fairly obvious."). Let the story speak for itself. It's just basic good newswriting. Also, basic information is helpful: How old are the men? What time of night was Mandrick out? Was there no one else around since it's an area with heavy foot traffic?

Just tell the ignorant gay basher that you have AIDS. I guarantee he won't want to hit you and draw blood. Seriously. The truth is, even if you did have HIV, the chances of him contracting it from hitting you are rather remote. But use their ignorance against them. My friend (who has since passed) used to say "Don't come any closer. My spit is a deadly weapon. If you lay one hand on me you'll get it." He never used it on anyone, but as feminine and diminutive as he was, he was up front about his status and never had anyone challenge him to a fight. They were way too scared ironically.

It's likely that the attackers themselves are HIV+, so this may not have the desired effect.

Hardly.  These jerks would be more likely to go after women, since they would be the more likely way such idiots would get the bug.  Or go after their dealer they got the needle from.  I've never heard of anyone who has HIV, gay or straight, attacking gay men like this--although I've heard of HIV pos guys who then go out and try and infect as many people--of either gender--out of anger and desire for revenge against the one who infected them.  But that's still pretty rare.  I've also heard and been witness to guys who WEREN'T gay but mistaken as such, and then attacked in some way--one of those being my brother, who simply has long hair and a beard (but is hetero).  The jerks who do this shit are trying to prove how "macho" and "manly" they are, by going out and "whuppin' us some of dem-der faggots!" (quote my brother).  One thing a person could try if being attacked is to say they have HIV--and are horny as hell!  I pulled that on a guy who tried hassling me, saying that he looked just like my type.  It caught him off-guard for a sec--and that was enough for me to get away.  Saying you've got HIV is also something a woman can try if being attacked by a guy--he's likely so uneducated on the subject that he might not want to continue the attack or sexual assault.  It's worth a try.

this is all bullshit!! they probably got in a fight with they're boyfriends and they're trying to pin it on black people and breeders. bunch of wolf crying, infantile, anal-territorial, opportunists.

These kinds of hate crimes are brutal and should be punished to the maximum extend of the law. Any police officer who doesn't take it seriously and makes every attempt to keep everyone safe- equally, should be fired immediately.  We should have been over this 40 years ago.  Part of this is due to the right-wing red-neck- gun totin' mentality that is hate-mongering and war-mongering CRIMINALS. They devise ways to make you think they are religious and pro family, but in reality they are either hiding the fact that they too are different, or gay, or sexually active outside their own marriage....and as a "cover up" they have this Nascar, RedNECK ,Ford F150, gun-totin .. wild militant ways of being BRUTAL and  eventually showing themselves to be the scum they are

Simone, why would you write "preference" only to cross it out and re-write "orientation"? Only the dinosaur LA Times still occasionally uses "preference."

Advise to gays and lesbians: budget for a small can of pepper spray / mace and keep it on you.  Could buy you enough time to save your life.

A couple friends clued me in to the LGBT community's dislike of that term. And I very much respect that, so I changed it. (I guess I'd always thought of my own as sexual preference, just like I prefer certain foods without necessarily choosing them... I dunno.)

Good advice. I just bought a fresh new 4oz pepper spray / mace canister for under 15 bucks on Amazon 3 days ago.

BTW: the gel is better than the spray, as it's heavier by nature and there's less chance of it blowing into your own eyes in case of wind.

A travel-sized can of hairspray--which can easily be carried in a coat pocket--is a useful tool as well.  Nail a guy in the face--and likely the eyes--and he'll be hollering for his mommy right quickly.  Considering what it does to hair, his eyes will be messed up pretty badly and he'll not be able to see or move his eyes, affording you time to get away.  Admittedly it's not as powerful as pepper spray, but it does work and looks totally innocent when carried.  I used to carry the stuff as a back-up before pepper spray became so commonly available to the public--and I might add that any type of spray in a can that stings is alternatives, and totally legal.  Myself--I carry a collapsible "cop baton" that's about the size of an umbrella, which is legal and easily used.  Places like Bud K carry them for less than 30 bucks.  I have the added "advantage" of being in a 200 pound electric wheelchair, which in itself is helpful for my self-protection--I can knock almost anyone down with that thing, and if it runs over toes, the attacker will be the one hurting and yelling for help.  Another idea is to carry a walking stick--they can look stylish, are useful if you need help walking, and can be dandy for defending ones self--just ask any monk!  Just a few thoughts on self-protection that anyone can use, gay or not, any age or gender.  Take care, folks!

Oh, pu--leeese--!  GTFU and go troll somewhere else with your religious judgment crap.  You even dare to post by the name of your imaginary deity?  Talk about needing punishment!  Isn't that "taking the name of the lord in vain"?  or "bearing false witness"?  Go push your nonsense on your own self--you need it more than the victims mentioned here.  Come to think of it, I know a couple of gay Leathermen Tops who'd love to give you a taste of REAL "punishment"...

And someone take these gay-bashing idiots to therapy... everyone knows that most hardcore gay haters are just hiding in the closet, and aren't smart or decent enough to just get over their prejudiced bullshit. I've seen far too many psych studies prove that already.

Wait, so we have a POLITICIAN running a blog with potentially sensationalized articles making his potential opponents look bad while building himself a platform based on gay rights?

Are people really dumb enough to not see through this and understand his real intent?

Guest

Hmm, not unlike the political machinery of incumbents and the institutional resources they bring to bear on the hold on power.

Guest

Honest question and not a troll but is the lack of police support due to them not caring or due to there simply not being enough police on staff?  With all of the various cuts going on across all cities in California I can't help to think that perhaps this sort of thing will only increase as patrols become more and more infrequent.

You know - that's a valid question.  I can, however, say that in the nearly 2 years I've lived in West Hollywood - I've had two encounters with the lovely gentlemen of the sheriff's department.  Both of them wildly unpleasant.  One when I was admittedly inebriated and a friend was helping walk me home [on New Years].  We were taunted and followed and blinded with spotlights from time to time as we tried to make our way home.  The more disturbing incident occured while walking down Santa Monica Blvd one evening with a visiting friend - stone cold sober - as a fella who had had an argument with some girl passed by.  She pointed him out and somehow we were wrangled into the whole situation.  We were manhandled and berated with profanity by the officers - all the while she sat on the phone in her Benz convertible smoking.  It was absolutely unacceptable and we were EVENTUALLY sent on our way.  I was disgusted and my friend was livid.  So - yeah - it seems there's a lack of professionalism in the neighborhood.

Jduran

Ahem  For the record.  I do know how to tweet and use facebook.  And to prove my point about social media not doing any fact checking - much of what you wrote above is untrue.  There was no "secret" meeting with club owners. There was no "damage mitigation".  Yet, you publish it as fact without any investigation.  How irresponsible!   It was a scheduled meeting about club operations with the Captain that I stumbled upon and wasn't even invited.  And no, I wasn't surprised by cameras.  I asked them to meet me there so that we could provide clarification about the terrible violent crimes that occurred in Weho.  Here is the real deal.  Weho is not some "magicland" that is immune from criminality.  Crimes happen here like they do anywhere else in Los Angeles.  Some LGBT people feel we may be immune from crime in our neighborhood.  That is not true.  Muggers want your wallet.  Bashers want you dead.  Some criminals want both.  But before anyone rushes to conclusions about the crimes, an investigation must be completed.  Crime is actually down in West Hollywood this year.  But I am sure those are not comforting words to the individuals that were battered.  And we take each of these violent crimes very seriously.  With 4 gay councilmen, don't you think we would be extremely concerned if gay bashing was occurring? Of course we would!   So, NEVER walk home from the clubs drunk and alone.  Be aware of your surroundings.  Caution in dark or quiet places.  Use Santa Monica Blvd and other brightly lit streets.  Yes.  We are using all available resources to catch and punish these predators.  But it is rarely helpful for people to rush to judgment and alarm people that there is "Gay bashing" going on.  We have had "gay bashing" in the past.  And I have represented those victims in court.  Those crimes  involve thugs with bats or pipes striking people down indiscriminately, not robbing them.  And they are in prison.   So, no we can't have police on every corner.  So watch out for one another - whether it is gay or straight people being preyed upon.

Mayor Duran, you're only now complaining about the LA Weekly publishing things with no investigation after you and your supporters relied on its "intrepid journalism" earlier this year? This is delicious irony.

The irony is that you would compare your losing campaign to people getting beaten in the streets.  Get real.  This issue is important.

John Duran, why are you such a petulant and whiney hypocrite?    You are protecting a status quo which has gotten worse under your watch, with the assistance of Abbe, Dictator John, The White Toast Wonder, and your appointed puppet.  Still waiting to see if the new John shakes things up, but I doubt it.   Your library, the pet project of developers whom you now owe blood, and the obscene council chamber shrine to incumbent egos, will prove your undoing.   Keep it up.  Anti-incumbency will rule the day.

Dante Atkins
Dante Atkins

I'm not comparing those two at all. I'm comparing your praise for the LA Weekly then to your opposition to the LA Weekly now, despite the level of irresponsible journalism being maintained at a consistent level throughout. As an attorney, you should know the difference. This issue is very important, which is why you should be working to solve it instead of engaging in specious arguments with me on an LA Weekly comment thread.

John Duran, out of touch? Hypocrite, more like. He spent the entire Council race pushing D'Amico, saying that we needed more gays in office, more people with experience serving the positive community, and deriding the incumbent protection culture of the Democratic Party. But what does he do? Join the incumbent protection culture by endorsing Betsy Butler to represent West Hollywood in the Assembly over Torie Osborn, a first-time candidate and out lesbian with decades of experience in activism for the LGBT and positive communities. Shame on Duran for his hypocrisy. And shame on D'Amico for following suit.

Jduran
Jduran

Um  Betsy Butler was fighting for marriage equality with us for the past 10 years.  You want me to turn my back on her because she is ...... GASP! ..... straight?  What does it say when we do not support the straight allies who support us?

Jerl Liandri
Jerl Liandri

I don't know, Mayor Duran. What does it say? Turning your back on straight allies is something you have some experience with. And Torie Osborn was director of the LA Gay and Lesbian Center at the height of the AIDS crisis and was Executive Director of Liberty Hill.

WeHo Confidential deserves absolutely no praise from any worthy publication. It's run by a guy who cyber bullies and harasses random gays. He revels in posting naked pictures of guys, just for kicks. It's one thing to knock the City of WeHo and the Sheriff in this case. But don't elevate that bottom-feeder who runs WeHo Confidential to some position he doesn't deserve.

Perhaps the LGBT community in WeHo needs to create a 'neighborhood' patrol since the police don't seem to be able to protect their own citizens.
