Whit Riske, 37-Year-Old Energy-Solutions Manager, Dies in Rock 'n' Roll Los Angeles Half Marathon

A man who died in the Rock 'n' Roll Los Angeles half marathon yesterday, previously thought to be 40 years old, has since been identified as 37-year-old Charles Whitmore Riske III of Costa Mesa.

He died just one half-hour after collapsing at Hope Street and West Olympic Boulevard. The 13.1-mile race had begun at 8:30 7:30 a.m. -- so the spot where Riske fell an hour two hours later, at 9:35 a.m., indicates he was almost halfway into the race at the finish line when the accident occurred. (Route map below.)

Riske is pictured on Facebook...

... with his wife, Jill Crane Riske, and a small baby. He looks to be the same Whit Riske who founded and managed Catalyst Development Partners, an Irvine company that "works with commercial property owners to design and build strategic energy-saving solutions," according to its website. And his LinkedIn says he graduated from Northern Arizona University for "construction management."

Riske's company profile makes him out to be an uber-involved O.C. businessman:

With more than a dozen years of experience in the real estate and construction industry, Whit Riske brings a unique relationship-driven style of management to Catalyst. He is a founder and managing principal of Catalyst, and he oversees all business operations and strategic initiatives for the company.

Prior to forming Catalyst, Mr. Riske worked for Wentz Group and Snyder Langston, where he helped manage over a half a billion dollars of construction projects. His most prominent projects include Shady Canyon Golf Club, the Merage Jewish Community Center, University Research Park Phases 12 and 13 (Broadcom), and the Resort at Pelican Hill Hotel, Spa and Pool Grill in Newport Coast.

Mr. Riske is an active member of the community, supporting various outreach and professional organizations. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), the United States Green Building Counsel (USGBC), and NAIOP's Young Professionals Group (NAIOP, YPG), where he serves as the Vice Chair of the YPG Alumni Committee. He is a LEED Accredited Professional and holds a B.S. of Construction Management from Northern Arizona University, College of Engineering.

As far as marathons go, Rock 'n' Roll Los Angeles is marketed as more of an amped-up, on-steroids commercial event than a wholesome green thing. The route preview plays like a videogame, with big Dodge logos everywhere -- very L.A. Live, where the starting gun was fired. Some have also criticized the race for running its participants up alongside smoggy freeways (ironic, considering it's an athletic endeavor).

Riske fell at Olympic and Hope, where the half marathon ends.
"We regretfully confirm that a participant passed away after Sunday's half marathon,'' the race's medical director, Dr. Lewis Maharam, told City News Service in an official statement. "We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss and our heartfelt sympathies go out to the runner's family and loved ones.''

Patrick Crane, brother-in-law to the victim, shared the following photo on Twitter yesterday:

Did you know Whit? Any idea what could have led to his sudden death on Sunday? Please share below.

Simone,

Isn't there a party named after your fat ass?

I was there at the finish line and saw him collapse. It was the scariest thing I have ever seen. What upset me more than anything was the fact that it took over 2 minutes for the medical "help" to assist him and the runners that leaped over his ceasing body to get the the finish line not even 100 ft away. And they of course drped him while attempting to get him onto the gernie. RIP Whit.

Simone Wilson I wish you a quick painful death.  I want it quick so I can remember you, know that you died and piss on your grave.

I was friends with Whit in college and have known him for 15 years. He was a good guy. He was a funny guy. He was uber smart. The world is a lesser place without him. As for this article, this author needs to readjust her approach to such a tragedy. Whit, you will be missed. CMB 551 HI 147.

The wife looks a lot younger than Mr. Riske.

She is also in her 30's - so no, she is not much younger.

Wow, I want to find out what kind of face cream she uses, I had her pegged for early 20s!

He was an awesome guy. I talked to him quite frequently over the past year about solar matters. I was planning to see him Friday.

I can't believe this "journalist" went trolling the internet for family photos and information. Get out of your office and find a reputable source. Don't write an article based on a Google search.

I am the Clinical Social Worker who was on staff when the paramedics arrived at California Hospital ER Dept. with Whit.  Such a somber experience for everyone that day.   On behalf of my colleagues at CA. Hospital, our deepest condolences to Jill Riske and the entire family.  Prayers for you...  Sincerely, Nadine

I am an old classmate of Jill's, and am very saddened to hear about this tragedy.  Although this article was poorly written, I am hoping people will concentrate on thinking about Jill and her family, and most especially the baby that Jill and Whit were expecting early next year.  Turn all the negative energy that you want to give to the terrible "writer" of this article and focus it on good thoughts, prayers, and healing for Jill.  Losing a spouse is never easy, losing a spouse at such a young age is even harder, but losing a spouse when you are both expecting your first child together is just simply tragic and unbelievable.  My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Riske family.

Oh my goodness...his wife is pregnant? :(  That just makes this tragic story even sadder.  I agree about concentrating more on thinking good thoughts for his wife in this difficult time...but seriously, this writer is a joke.  Shame on you Simone Wilson.

Unfortunately, I witnessed this tragic event... Mr. Riske collapsed directly in front of me as I was waiting for my husband to come up the finish line... The images have replayed in my mind dozens of times over the last 24 hours.  I cannot begin to express the sorrow I feel for his wife and family... nor begin to understand what happened that morning.  May God Bless his family and may his soul rest in peace.

the commentary outrage here is misplaced.. this ISNT an obituary. its a matter of fact if unpolished report in a free publication of something tragic yet newsworthy

Kathyh
Kathyh

WHO are you?  IT IS UNPOLISHED and barely qualifies as a report!  It is a free publication, but I hope she isn't as thoughtless to you or yours should an early tragic death befall you or someone you love.

peabody3000
peabody3000

thoughtless how? there are no statements criticizing the deceased or otherwise disrespecting him. once again this isnt an obituary. im sure someone will publish some wonderful prosaic eulogy about him but this isnt the place for that. people freak out at the tiniest excuse these days

peabody3000
peabody3000

on one hand i would agree that a derisive and flippant tone would be most inappropriate. on the other hand i see no evidence of such a tone

Wesleyan

It's the overall tone ... derisive and flippant. There's no place for that in an objective piece of reporting.

peabody3000

just listen to yourself, utterly chomping at the bit to heap piles of scorn and disrespect everywhere possible at the smallest opportunity. people like you never make the world a better place, even though you portray yourself as some kind of champion of decency. lol..

Like I said WHO ARE YOU?  "freak out at the "tiniest excuse' "  you must be sleeping with her.  She has not one compassionate thought for him or anyone else...T H O U G H T L E S S

My condolences to Jill and Whit's family. This story is pointless and atrocious. Did it really get through an editor or some other form of human-decency gatekeeper? Reporters are sometimes asked to file demanding amounts of copy in insanely narrow time windows or subjected to edits that don't resemble their original prose. Maybe that's what happened here. But it sure reads like a callous, cynical blame-the-victim job by one Simone "Uber" Wilson. Story should go gentle into that good night.

It's not even journalism. Journalism is based on facts. This piece is is the worst attempt at an obituary full of assumptions ever. It's one thing to criticize another pointless downtown event, but have some respect for a human life. Especially that of young family man leaving behind a grieving wife and a baby. Businessmen from OC are people too..

Kathy Hugins

I have written a response to Ms Wilson and intend to write her employer as well.  This is the most insensitive, derogatory piece of writing, not journalism I have ever read in any publication in the 30+yrs that I have been reading papers!   I agree this needs to be taken down and Ms. Wilson should lose her job over it!  It is disgraceful.  NO ONE, least of all Whit deserves to be treated like this after their TRAGIC DEATH!  I am truly incensed that this could happen.   The worst effect of our ammendment of Freedom of Speech.  Fortunately there are hundreds if not thousands of people who knew and loved Whit for the wonderful man, husband and contractor he was.  But, please take this down so no one will be confused by your uninformed inuendo.

What a weird way to present the death of a person. Why is this even in The Weekly? How about we let the medical staff determine "what could have led to his sudden death" and let them inform the family so they can grieve privately. A terribly written article by what must be an incredible dufus.

CandyCorn
CandyCorn

Why don't you remove this article, it's obviously offensive to everyone reading it!

runner21

First of all RIP Riske, this is an unforunate event at ANY race, not sure why the course or the fact it runs along a freeway is a solid point to write about. Rather than focus on what Mr. Riske's website says (anyone can google) where's the news? No signs of research or much sympathy towards this mans life as a runner, which btw a half marathon in 2 hrs time is an excellent achievement.

"Any idea what could have led to his sudden death on Sunday?" Are you for real? Someone's much-loved family member has just died. This badly written article is a complete waste of space. May Whit rest in peace.

Your article was full of mistakes and your tone is disgusting. You seriously shouldn't be a writer and I'm ashamed for LA Weekly and anyone who would work with you.

This entire article should be removed.

A father, brother and husband just died. I hope when you die Simone, that someone writes a poorly written article about your sad life... if you were even that lucky.

simone, i hope you dont take these criticisms thinking that there is always someone who doesnt like your article because thats just how people are. i want you to understand that these criticisms are true and based on fact and that you are truly an idiot. sometimes i wonder the bigger classless moron is, you are dennis romero.

I don't know who Dennis is, but it's hard to believe someone could be a bigger slimeball wriitng about another human being who just met an untimely end than this women (note I so not use the title writer)!

RIP Whit, he was a great man to me and everyone I saw him interact with in the short time I was fortunate to get to know him.  The world has lost a great friend, businessman, and human being most importantly.  My thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this time.

I don't know this man but my condolences to his family. The writer should issue an apology for the flippant casual tone of this story... very poorly written and disrespectful. RIP Mr Riske....

Amen to Brian H's comment.  Simone Wilson should be ashamed of the cavalier tone in which this piece was written.  Have some respect, for decency's sake.Whit was a wonderful person.  Dependable.  Strong.  Trustworthy.  The world has lost one of the good men.

Whit was an amazing person with an amazing heart.  One of those people who make an immediate impact on you. Hardworking and proud of his family and wife.  Although I never met his wife he often spoke proudly of her with a twinkle in his eye.  He will be missed

very  sad.  my condolences to his family and friends.  i know a few people who witnessed this tragedy.  they indicated that there was immediate staff members to assist.  in spite of this tragic loss, the rock n roll was a well run, fun event.  it is a choice to participate and any negative comments about the course or event are unfounded. i hope mr. riske's passed on doing something he loved doing.

Whit, may he rest in peace, was a great human being, no other explanation necessary. I don't think Simone "the wine country bumpkin, out here strugglin in streets/cubicles of Venice/LA" (per @simone_electra) is qualified to write about this delicate or any other serious topic. In case LA-LA land hasn't fried every cell in your brain, next time you decide to write about matters of life and death, which I think you should be barred from doing, give your tone a second thought before you start typing.
