LAPD Arrests 23 Occupy L.A. Protesters in Downtown Financial District for Civil Disobedience

Cops in riot gear swarmed the financial district this morning.
For all further updates, see: "Occupy L.A. Pitches Mini Tent City at Bank of America Plaza; Riot Police Move in for Arrests."

Update, 1:15 p.m.: VIDEO of occupiers blocking the intersection of Grand and Fifth, at the bottom.

Update, 12:45 p.m.: @OccupyLA reports that riot police just "charged protestors" and "blocked everyone in" at Broadway and Third. More protesters are being arrested.

Update, 10:30 a.m.: Figueroa has been reopened for cars and foot traffic.

The first real arrests of the two-month Occupy L.A. demonstrations just went down at Fourth Street and Figueroa, where a circle of 21 protesters had joined hands around three slogan-covered tents in the middle of the street. (As promised.) They were all arrested for civil disobedience at about 9:45 a.m. as 1,500-plus supporters flanked them on the sidewalks.

Compared to the reported mayhem (and journalist beatdowns) in New York today -- where Occupy Wall Street is orchestrating a similar day of action against America's financial institutions -- the Los Angeles arrests were pretty mellow, according to witnesses at the scene. Still very emotional, though, as protesters were carried off, one by one, by LAPD officers in riot gear.

A couple more L.A. arrests earlier this morning were a bit more unexpected:

LA Weekly photographer Colin Young-Wolff says that two protesters were caught and cuffed after "some of the Occupy movement split off and went to the police line ahead."

The march route wound through the downtown financial district, beginning at Hope and Third, then ending at the illegal tent circle. Occupiers denounced government bailouts for the nation's banks and tax breaks for its major corporations, while the 99 percent goes hungry and jobless.

Five minutes before the bulk of the arrests were made, police announced over vehicle bullhorn that the protest was an act of civil disobedience and failure to disperse. "The rest of the people on the sidewalk cheered and chanted during the arrests," says Young-Wolff.

According to reporter Ramon Galindo, the group of arrestees included one (very ballsy) 82-year-old woman:

"Riot police arrest 82 year old lady"

That was probably the height of the fear and tension, as cops raised their non-lethal weapons and batons in anticipation of possible resistance. Here's some video footage from NBC LA reporter John Cádiz Klemack.

KNX news radio reports that arrestees' bail is set at $500 a pop.

Young-Wolff says protesters are now continuing to march -- though he's not quite sure to where, exactly. The @OccupyLA Twitter account instructs followers to meet at City Hall at 11:30 a.m. for another demonstration.

Update, 1:15 p.m.: Local FOX reporter Phil Shuman has been posting regular video updates to the financial-district invasion today. Here's the most recent one, which shows protesters blocking the intersection of Grand and Fifth:

According to KNX news radio, most of them are staying on the sidewalk to avoid arrest, but are causing "traffic problems" nonetheless. Others are heading back to Bank of America. Across the country at Occupy Wall Street, a whopping 175 people have reportedly been arrested since morning.

What I find ridiculously funny is the fact that there are how many living in L.A.? And, how many came out to protest? Maybe everyone else couldn't make it because they were WORKING.....It's the same here in St.Louis. All of the Occupy protesters out here all seem to just be jobless kids, with nothing better to do. The police haven't even really messed with them here, because they're not considered a real threat. And if this thing really does snowball, what then? Civil unrest? Unlike our country long ago, the military and police squadrons are much, much more prepared for things of that nature. So, what? Throw eggs and fire off AR-14s in anger? Our country is very ripe at the moment. If you people don't see that, you're as blind as justice. If we don't unify, others will strike at our weakness. That's what victims were taught in ancient times to rectify a bully: Wait until the perfect moment when they are weak, then take out their knees. Japan knew that. Unfortunately, for them, this bully had a few bombs * Ahem * Aces up it's sleeve. And now the world is full of  " Nuculer " weapons. (Sorry, couldn't help myself at the opportunity :0 )  So, what if, at our weakest, someone decides, " Hey, let's take over that young, restless, and financially fucked country over there. They can't even agree on healthcare,  let alone keep their people in order. "  Again, these are possibilities. I don't advocate violence against protesting citizens, nor do I agree with the reason protesters are out there today. I have a job. A CRAPPY JOB!! However, I get paid for working. It's no one's fault but my own if I decide to impregnate a few girls, and have to help pay. Or, for the lesser men out there, pay child support. It's my fault if I become addicted to drugs. It's my fault if I get fired for coming in late, or punching my boss in the nose because he looked at me funny and it hurt my delicate feelings. If I suddenly come up with an idea, and become rich off of it, then hip hip hooray for me. Capitalism, baby. And I agree with the person who made the comment about half of the protesters looking like illegals. Dude, I'm sorry. But I whole heartily agree with, KEEP THE MOTHER FUCKING ILLEGALS OUT!!!  Part of the reason jobs are scarce is because we were so focused on cheap labor and votes, we forgot about our own fucking people. Now, they're here. And we're spending how much to deport them, and " keep " them out? And now they took my job!!! To quote two hilarious and on point men. And don't try to feed me that horse shit about how bad it is in their country, and I don't know, and blah blah blah, ok?Cry me a river bitch. You need to focus on yourself, fix YOUR problems before you can EVER decide to try to fix someone else. I'm a very empathetic man, but fuck sympathy. What has it ever done, except get someone killed?I've hung out with illegals, worked with them. you know what they do?Get one apartment, and pack ten of themselves in it. A two bedroom, for 450 a month, they flush the toilet twice a day, wash once, and barely keep the lights on. then, with all of the extra money they make from not SPENDING IT ALL ON CRAP THE MEDIA " FORCED THEM TO SWALLOW ", they send it home, or just save it up. when they get deported, or when they just drive back home, they live well for awhile. So, that job could have belonged to an American citizen. That space, that apartment? Could have housed an American family. And as I get the feeling this will fall on deaf ears, I have bored myself.Later

The USA is in debit $15 trillion, Has 46 million without health care, Has military bases in over 140 countries, Has millions on food stamps, Borrowed  $billions from  Communist China  to pay for IRAQ WAR, Has lost its manufacturing base, its real source of wealth. But when a few thousand young people protest in our cities against absolute greed by the few,  our Control System releases the police in riot gear with dogs and horses to quell these very evil protesters. But I ask how many Corp. CEO's, How many WALL Street CEO's, How many Bank CEO's have been arrested and jailed for their collective part in helping bring down our country's financial and manufacturing system through greed and putting profit before people. Its a pathetic state of affairs , in our so called Land of the Free and Home of the Brave.

Yes! We know! But are the hundreds and thousands of dollars of taxpayer money being consumed by these protest fools worth it? Talk about a pathetic state of affairs...

They are getting in the way of us making a living and enjoying our public spaces.  They are not making a dent on the 1%.  Wake up!

211 In Progress
211 In Progress

That's why they are protesting...to wake you up. See it's working... your English has already improved... Now steel yourself before the 1% steals everything you don't have.

211 In Progress

"Weapons?" "A call to arms?" You are wigging. "Steel yourself" is an old adage meaning to "prepare yourself." For example, getting a tooth pulled without pain relief, Or having a dislocated shoulder popped back into place. Or when about to get bad news. That's all I meant. And I am neither better or worse than anyone else-- 1%--99%-- or anywhere in between. Nor am I Frick -n- Frack-- more like a Paddywhack! hey, I was merely joking with MartyinLA.

@ Mr. 211 in progress:

Dude. Your "poist" is ridiculous. But hey, you obviously are the 99%. Never heard of "steel" as in prepare but whatever. So what you are TRYING to communicate to us is a call to arms? We should all grab weapons? Paranoia much? Dude, I have no concept of language? Please, you have NO idea... I did not embarrass myself on some stupid "poist" but if that makes you feel good to think that you embarrassed someone with a masters degree in linguistics then fine. You call me putz and dipstick? Then you threaten me with a 15.7? Puleeeeeze...If you need to explain that your "poist" is satire and irony then you may be the one with a communication problem, buster. You actually think you are smarter than me Mr. 211 in progress? The fact that you must resort to name calling and claim you are "smarter than the internet troll looking for an electronic fistfight" reveals your insecurity. Your vagina is showing.

But I do digress. Now that you have explained that you were using satire, I see that you were joking in saying we should arm ourselves with weapons. I had you pegged as one of those occupy losers. Sorry about that... Seriously.

211 In Progress

"Steel" as in prepare yourself, and "steal" as in take something. But now take heed from someone who has no concept of the intricate use of language, and then uses that "baseless" position to embarass himself and as as a platform to poist an argument to impeach an open exchange of ideas. Is my spelling correct, putz? The comment was satire. You know-- irony? In the tradition of Jonathon Swift. As was the pseudonym-- 211 In Progress-- dipstick. Now let go of Frick before Frack 15.7's you. It's a sad day when the "heroin smoking, lice infested" 99% are smarter than the Internet Trolls looking for an electronic fistfight. Who to root for?

Wow. That seems like good advice that the entire society should adopt. Everyone, quick, go out and steal, because "211 in progress" says it will improve society. Back that up with paranoia that the 1% is going to steal "everything you don't have." Excellent advice! Take heed, take heed, bothers and sisters... Yes, take advice from someone who misspells "steel" and "steal" only three words apart...

For the record, those were union idiots who were arrested. Funny as hell to watch these union workers complain about no jobs... I too cheered the arrests. Let's hope the LAPD sends Good Jobs LA & SEIU the bill for their services.

Most look like they came to this country to steel those jobs from our citizens, and now they demand.  Jesh.
