Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Tells Occupy L.A. To Leave By 12:01 a.m. Monday

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced late this afternoon that City Hall Park, the home of Occupy L.A. for the last 56 days, will close at 12:01 a.m. on Monday.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said that police would move to clear the park at some later, unspecified time, after Occupiers have been given ample notice to clear out.

The announcement was met with defiance both inside City Hall -- where an Occupier managed to disrupt the mayor's press conference -- and outside.

"We're not moving," said Manny, a protester who gave only his first name.

In a letter to Occupy L.A., Villaraigosa praised the group for changing the terms of the national political debate, and for having "awakened the country's conscience." However, he continued, "The Occupy movement is now at a crossroads."

"The movement faces the question of how it can build on its initial success," Villaraigosa wrote. "It is a question of whether energy will be consumed to defend a particular patch of earth or whether that energy will be channeled to spreading the message of economic equality and signing more people up for the push to restore the balance to American society."

For their part, the Occupiers seem all too eager to defend their particular patch of earth. There has been talk of bringing a large contingent of labor and leftist clergy to protest the eviction, or perhaps try to block it. The National Lawyers Guild has issued a flier advising Occupiers what to do in case of arrest. Many of the Occupiers are self-described "sovereigns," who assert that police officials have no authority over them.

Still others have been meeting for the past three weeks to prepare a post-eviction plan. The Raid Preparations Committee, later renamed the "Preparations and Reconstruction Committee," has been working on obtaining gas masks and determining fallback meeting places.

"It's not a picnic anymore," said Jared Iorio, one of the Occupy moderators.

Occupy L.A. members have said they hope to learn from the Occupy protests in other cities. In some cases, the police have succeeded in evicting the encampments, only to see protesters return the next day.

City officials have also learned from others' experiences, and say they plan to "secure" the park area while it is being rehabilitated. Once the grass has been restored -- and it's not clear how long that will take -- officials say the park will reopen during its posted hours -- 5 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. In the meantime, the west steps of City Hall will remain open for public protest during park hours.

At a General Assembly meeting on Wednesday, author Deepak Chopra urged the Occupiers to continue their efforts.

"The Occupy movement is unstoppable," Chopra said. "If next week, they evict us, move somewhere else close by and occupy! If they evict us again, move again!"

The Occupy movement is more than just 1 or 2 ideas of inequality, it is about an entire country built up over decades based on unsustainable values, laws, politics and greed.

There is no easy fix. There is no one answer to bring about change. It started with a small group that, over time, has grown. It started growing around the world where people started to realize that the problems people were faced with wasn't just a small number of people, but a large majority. Consequently civil disobedience was slated to happen. Remembering the story of The French Revolution, this is much similar, except on a global scale. This movement will only continue to grow, regardless of the measures taken against it, because in this case, history needs to repeat itself to bring about drastic change that is due. Only martyrs will come of repression of this, and cause the movement to spread more fiercely. Change is inevitable, and it will be hard earned and high time.

From Roque Burio, Jr. the lemon who can dance and sing:Here is my song for the UTLA leaders who incited the teachers and people to occupy LA and LAUSD. I am really so excited to see how you will dance on Monday with the law enforcers against your illegal occupation of public places. I am sure you still remember when you deny your help and arbitration to me and other teachers who were falsely accused and falsely charged by your mother company LAUSD. The dance of the lemon the LAUSD made with us teachers was so effective that we lasted for a reasonable time while being paid and also we still got paid when we agreed to leave the settle the false accusations and charges.. Here is the dance step: go around the circles and keep on singing some American patriotic songs-- who knows the police might also sing with you-- but you must leave the public places without injury. Some of you claimed to be socialists and communists and you know very well that your struggle is protracted and you are not going to a picnic. By the way I think you will not be a group of lemongrass that easily burns with passion but the flame is so short lived.

NEVER, EVER did the Tea Party cause the problems these people are.  NEVER!!!!!!!!!!! the liberals tried to say we were rowdy and disrespectful, no way.  When everyone left D.C. you wouldn't have known they were there.  There should be some arrests made, but because it is on the LEFT, they will be HERO's.  But,tell me  why is Villy making them leave?  Ho Hum!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We know.  To date the Tea Party rally once a month in several states, you NEVER hear of any problems.  These people understand the law and how to assemble peacefullyDISGUSTING what is going on in L.A. and elsewhere.

Koch brothers bankrolled the whole Tea Baggers, bought off the cops and paid for the clean up afterwards.

The Tea Baggers went home and everything was kept nice and neat.

The problem is that the OWS protesters don't have homes to go to anymore. Through no fault of their own their future got stolen from them.

THAT'S what they're protesting.

Did you think that they were just playing at camping out and waving placard around for the day like the Tea Baggers?

ms. podcast, all the people that I know who have made their house payments still live in those houses. Its actually quite simple. Make house payment, keep house. From what I see at OLA, yes, they are playing at camping out. Sure, Koch Bros. bankrolled Tea Party, Unions bankroll occupy scum. So what.

It's a shame, ms. podcast, that you do not care how your fellow humans feel.

Not sure where I said I blame the victims, you have a nice imagination.

I have noted the way occutards like to play victims though.

Yes, you won your bet that I cannot say I own a condo because I own a house.

You self-righteousness is entertaining, please continue.

msbpodcast
msbpodcast

Your assumptions are ALL FALSE.

Here's my reality.

I did NOT make any choices that I regret.I went into software development in the 1970s. It was VERY GOOD to me.

I paid the max into the Canadian Social Insurance and US Social Security systems from my 1%er salary and then sh*t happened. I got sick with MS (Multiple Sclerosis [the MS in MSBPodcast ])

I got my education and my wife's education (she gets her BA this year,) without needing to borrow a fuckin' dime.

I own my condo without needing a mortgage. (Bet you can't say that.)

I owned several cars, outright, until I couldn't drive anymore.

When I earned money, I earned a LOT of money. I saved/invested a lot of money.

I DONT believe in banks, (I worked for enough of them,) and pay my credit cards in their entirety off every month, so their usurious fees are noted but not felt by me.

I wonder if YOU could go without getting a pay check for the rest of your life.

I wonder what happened to your sense of empathy to twist and shrivel it to such an extent that you blame the victims.

WalterIII

OK so ms. podcast, you made some bad choices that you regret. You got yourself an education on borrowed money and it must be repaid. Let me introduce you to something--its rather inconvenient--its called REALITY. So you "don't pay for squat?" I am a taxpayer. I'm sorry you care for no one except yourself. Personally, I am not a few "cheques" away from disaster. Your self-righteousness is pathetic. Go hug your cat.

WalterIII

Its actually funny, Linda, that you "Reply" to yourself.

msbpodcast
msbpodcast

That would be nice except that an awful lot of these people (the supposedly dirty and unwashed ignorant masses in the OWS movement, [who characterized these people for you?]) are college student and have loans to pay back.

You know that the education loans, tens of thousands of dollars worth per year over a four year degree, still have to be repaid and working for minimum wage ain't going to do it.

"We The People" don't pay for squat. I live here and I know that if I ever need it, the medicare and medicaid insurance that I'm paying for now won't pay for squat either.

The only revenge I might possibly have, yet don't really care about, is that YOU are only a few pay cheques away from disaster. One serious illness, broken bone or car accident and you could be out there begging a meal down at a OWS soup kitchen.

Ohh a personal attack... Like I give a crap how you "feel".

Kick all of the illegal aliens out of the US, then give all of the OWS their jobs on the farms, problem solved. They have free housing, a job, and free medical that "We The People", of America pay for.

"Many of the Occupiers are self-described 'sovereigns,' who assert that police officials have no authority over them." So their defense is that although the signs say  a "person" cannot occupy, that they are not a person? Who came up with that, the same guy who will sue for a wrongful eviction? Oh, this is gonna be a real hoot!

I sure as hell hope they arrested the idiot who interrupted the mayor and Chief Beck in much the same way those Irvine 11 muslim students were sentenced for their interruptions. After watching the behavior of the city liaison committee from the Youtube videos, it is clear the encampment should have been much more selective in who was sent to speak on their behalf. Gia was the only one who behaved like a mature adult. Respect goes both ways. They.were.the 99%...Um. yeah.

The last nail in the coffin will be the enactment of presidential power to invoke Military authority over American populace on American soil without having declare war or even a state of emergency.

Then I'd say we're heading right past Cuba towards Haiti...

I would have said that, if he wasn't correct.  That enactment is in the works, and the timing isn't on accident.

We are being subjected to a police state where protesting isnot being tolerated.  These evictionsexemplify the suppression of our civil liberties including the right toorganize, one of the basis rights set forth by our founding fathers.  Police brutality is running rampant underorders from Governors who have their pockets lined with Wall Street and SpecialInterest monies.   Stand up and lend yourvoice with these free posters I was compelled to design on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot...
