From what I've seen at the three occupy camps I've been to, anarchism is more appropriate. Very few people are looking for a "hand out" though they want to smash the system that ripped them off.How can more government cure our society's evils when the government is bought and owned by the 1%?

I can give them the address to the White House, Congress, and the Senate. Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, and Nancy Pelosi as well. Government can't cure "society's evils". It's too busy creating them and profiting from them. If you are waiting for government to solve your problems you will just grow old wanting. Sitting in your own feces at PoopStock won't solve anything. Their needs to be a split between Wall Street and Washington DC. Washington should only regulate not participate. That is something everyone can get behind and the political and chattering class would then need to bend to our will.

Ending the Fed while having a fiat currency would not be the best money the nation spent because they wouldn't be able to maintain the value after that. Making the fed do its job would be a real and practical achievement.

No I shouldn't make hygiene jokes, we all know OWS protestors are all equal but some are more equal than others and those stay in $700 a night hotel rooms. You can't just end the federal reserve as long as you have a fiat currency. You can insist that they do their job for the first time ever and that is to maintain the value of the dollar. Not to try to tweak the US economy as they seem to think their job is. If corporations are not to be treated as people then they shouldn't be taxed like people. Bricks and mortar can't pay taxes, people pay taxes. But "corporate personhood" basically boils down to pseudo intellectual babble that pretends private sector industry is the root cause of government failure. When in actuality, it's governments desire to inject themselves as a player (rather than just a regulator) in the private sector. Whether it be to buy votes from their constituents or pad their stock portfolios. If you could target individuals for personal destruction without their layer of protection of the corporation, you would have nobody willing to take the risk. As far as spending on campaigns, Corporations should only lose their voice at the same time unions do.

I'm not a big Fairey fan, but if this works for people, so be it. At least he's not an immovable slave to one particular politician. My problem is the whole idea of the Guy Fawkes mask being used as a symbol for anarchy and extreme left protest. Fawkes attempted to destroy parliament not to usher in some liberal utopia, but to reinstate Catholic leadership in England. The Occupiers might think they're borrowing from Moore's graphic novel (or a massive Hollywood blockbuster film), but the history of this symbol runs in exact opposition to much of what they stand for.Never let the facts get in the way of a good story though...

We ARE borrowing from Alan Moore's work. The V mask doesn't really look like Guy Fawkes. We liked the movie. We especially liked the last scene when the totalitarian dictator was killed, and the masses turned out masked, overwhelming security and taking back their rights.

But don't let your failure to understand popular culture get in the way of your theorizing.

The movie had nothing to do with Moore's version. V was about revenge and anarchy, not about anyone taking back their rights. The movie pre-empted the graphic novel's message.

Carmen: It's not theorizing, it's understanding history beyond a rather average 2006 movie that I have seen. (Along with Moore's graphic novel that i have read.) Jeez, if you had even watched the movie carefully, the film starts with a flashback to Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. Still, I guess it's easier to watch all that kung-fu and see stuff blow up than it is to even check wikipedia for 5 minutes (or god forbid, read a book).

He's one of its most successful and effective propagandists. After all, this imagery originally helped brand, commodify, and sell a neoliberalist to the American public and the world as someone who offered "hope" and "change." Religion, feudalism, and monarchy, gave way to parliamentary democracy and capitalism; democracy, religion, and even capitalism itself, gave way to neoliberalism, which is a kind of theological ideology, as it is based on blind faith in free markets, and it worships the giant, omnipotent corporate powers that run the world. It is the dominant religion of our day. Fairey was kind of right, then: Obama is part of the change to a neoliberal order, offering the same kind of (blind) "hope" that the faithful have in their religions.
