VIDEO: LAPD Riot Squad Tackles Occupy L.A. Photographer

Full video below.
Update, with full story: "Tyson Heder, Photojournalist Mauled by LAPD, Still in Jail After Occupy L.A. Raid; Others Allege Baton Brutality."

Though most protesters, observers and journalists at the LAPD raid of the Occupy L.A. camp last night gave the 1,200 responding riot police a gold star for good behavior, at least one photographer at the scene isn't singing their praises this morning.

As the Los Angeles Times gingerly puts it, "LAPD too violent, some Occupy L.A. protesters allege."

But we don't see anything alleged about the following video, in which a man trying to record the officers tearing down one of Occupy's structures turns into their human ping-pong ball:

[Update: It appears the video has been removed due to "copyright claims" by CBS. Wack. Here's how we remember it: Photographer gets shoved to the ground. Furious, he gets up and starts yelling at officers. So a pack of about five officers maul him to the ground and drag him away. Wish y'all could have seen it; best local TV in years.]

Dude's got to seriously be hurting right now. Hopefully he at least got some dramatic first-person footage out of it.

So -- is the Los Angeles Police Department taking a page from L.A. County Sheriff, who makes a policy of detaining photographers simply for taking pictures? The LAPD did warn freelance and indie journalists (and all those, including the LA Weekly, not among the 12 chosen for the eviction's official "media pool") that they were subject to arrest if they didn't excuse themselves from the "unlawful assembly."

In other words, subject to being treated like peaceful protesters. That's why chosen media poolers got biohazard-proof gloves!

The all-star Ustreamer behind "Occupy Oakland Live" commended police for their careful, well-planned approach to the Los Angeles eviction, and for always displaying their names on their badges -- something that couldn't be said for squads in many other cities.

But, to quote the runner-up on the last season of "The Bachelor" (don't judge): "You can't leave something like this on good terms. It's not possible." Occupiers wanted to stay, the city wanted them gone. Looks like their was some sketchy collateral.

For full coverage of last night's raid, see "LAPD Moves In To Clear City Hall Camp."

Update, Dec. 1: Another YouTuber has come to the rescue by re-uploading the KCAL9 footage. The cameraman in the video, named Tyson Heder, is said to still be in jail, along with many other protesters. "Please help us raise funds for Tyson's legal fees, bail, replacing his broker camera and possible hospital bills," says a Facebook page called "Free Journalist Tyson Heder Now." CBS has oddly (and kind of creepily) removed the footage of his mauling from its own site as well. Thank god for the Tubes:

This is why I stay far far away from these protests. I have a zero tolerance policy for police abuse of authority.I would resist and NEVER STOP RESISTING until I won or was dead/unconscious.its just that simple. Resisting arrest is NOT ILLEGAL.the arrest must be LAWFUL for the "resistance" to be illegal.I question the legality of the police even being their.it is your lawful DUTY to resist an unlawful arrest.we need ENOUGH people to also question it so we can COMPEL change in them by force.we need to STOP ASKING and START DEMANDING.

Why is it that this video and many other videos that recorded the police brutalizing the protesters have been taken off from you-tube and other outlets? LA Weekly, if you are also influenced by this police state and by the corrupted politicians that run this country then you like other media have no credibility. If the LAWeekly didn't remove the video then you have the obligation to inform your readers on the reasons for why it was removed and who forced you to remove it.

Since when is voicing your opinion being combative?  This was complete lunacy on the cops as usual. Cop is the 1 that pushed him over the pipe on his ass, oh but thats perfectly ok?!! They tell him not to resist when they clearly drag him around 3-4 cops have him at this time.

I find it combative when they block public thoroughfares, when they impede traffic, when they unlawfully camp in areas where camping is not allowed, when they interfere with the daily business routine of people trying to earn a living, when they urinate and defecate in public, when they leave their trash laying around and when their assemblies consume tax payer funded resources such as the police and fire departments. Perhaps if they would remove their nose rings, not get tattoos all over their faces and necks, take a bath and dress in a somewhat respectful appearance they would stand a better chance of finding employment. However, the majority of these protestors have a totally worthless education background, such as degrees in history or English literature or the science of coffee making that costs as much as a medium priced house and thus are totally useless in today's workplace. I am part of the so called 99% and I am on target to retire early.

I find you combative but I'm not punching you in the head.

what's that old quote about socialism and temporarily embarrassed millionaires? Eh, whatever, I'm sure you're a real success story. I also like the jabs at people with tattoos and piercings, which bare no relevance to the topic at hand whatsoever.

The guy was a raging maniac, and got what he deserved.

The fact that a videographer is 5 feet from the action proves that this had nothing to do with suppression of the press.

Did you see the officer punch him in the head at around 2:50? He was photographing what was going on, as allowed by law. Regardless, cops should never punch someone they have already subdued. To have the attitude that anyone who appears to have disobeyed authorities in any way deserve unlimited and unregulated punishment as deemed appropriate by the officer is completely un-American.

What exactly makes an assembly unlawful?

there is no law for that.  That's how lawless our country has become.

How does footage from a guy's cell get taken down by CBS? The guy didn't work for CBS, right? And he owned the cell? So what was the rationale?

"official media pool" = biased coverage. Just like "entrenched journalist's" = war is peace. Heard much about our 2 ongoing wars lately? Are they over? Did we win? Can we open up a McDonald's yet? Can't trust the mainstream media to honestly report the effect government and it's agents have upon the citizenry. What was once known as transparency-- and a point of pride among true journalists-- is now merely a choreographed collaboration, vile in the most Orwellian connotation-- unless of course a "breaking news" blow-job or extra-marital affair is involved.

We are being subjected to a police state where protesting isnot being tolerated.  These evictionsexemplify the suppression of our civil liberties including the right toorganize, one of the basis rights set forth by our founding fathers.  Police brutality is running rampant underorders from Governors who have their pockets lined with Wall Street and SpecialInterest monies.   Stand up and lend yourvoice with these free posters I was compelled to design on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot...

I don't like overly aggressive tactics, but it looks like the photographer was combative and resisting the police. He probably got hurt, but too bad. Nothing was mentioned about the photographer being a jerk in this blog entry, which is a good example of lousy journalism.

there's nothing 'jerky' about yelling at a cop after he throws you backwards through debris onto the concrete with that kind of force. even then, he didn't make a move at the cop, he was yelling with one hand holding his camera, and the other clenched at his side or pointing swiftly at the ground.. you're allowed to take the athletic stance and yell here in america. no laws against that. would i have advised him to leave after the mob was told that only 12 reporters were allowed to remain there? sure.. can i tell you that everyone heard the announcement? no idea..

meeet
meeet

It was probably hard to not be a jerk after the police just shoved him to the ground. It would have been worse journalism for him to just leave when the police told him to. The media is supposed to be a check on authority, and they are supposed to be exempt from consequences for doing their job. Lets not forget that

That the videographer is setup at this particular location, wreaks of setup. Also, interesting that the video starts at the shove, and not at what preceded the shove. Pathetic.

Lol, someone likes calling the victim of police brutality pathetic.  Are rape victims pathetic as well, is it their fault they are raped? Are they asking for it?

I got surrounded by six smaller cops while taking pictures at a 9/11 event several years ago. I showed them nothing was amiss and they let me go. While I shouldn't have showed them the pictures I was taking, I wasn't about to get into a physical fight with them like the idiot on the video.

Why aren't OWS leaders (very broadly defined to include sites like this) encouraging their followers to do things in smarter ways? The Occupiers could press the same agenda (to the extent that they have any sort of coherent agenda at all) using far more effective tactics. Yet, OWS leaders keep enabling idiotic tactics. Why is that?

While I'm sure most Occupiers are sincere, you have to wonder: is OWS just a setup to discredit attempts to keep the elites in check?

weak. he was warned many times to step back. he should have complied with them instead of taunt them/lunge at towards them.

It's clear though the cops attacked first by pushing the photographer from behind so that he fell over some steps and hurt himself and that he stayed non-violent while they went ballistic.  (Yelling isn't against the law, nor is asking why a cop did something.)  There's a reason Villaraigosa staged this raid at night- the better to hide his trampling of the constitution.  There goes freedom of the press and the right to peaceful assembly.   Freedom of the press actually means that the press isn't restricted to "pools" but is allowed to freely and safely document stories as they happen,  without police intimidation or threat to bodily harm.  Anything less than that and we live in a police state.

Yiperoo

Nope, I saw that from the beginning. The cops told him to leave, and he basically said that he's just photographing. he was looking at his camera when he got shoved after that.

Funny how the video started right at the push. "Clearly" the cops started it.  I'll bet the guy was baking them a pie before that.

It would have been good for the paragraphs that say Update to have times on them. Here's one example of how liveblogging is done in a way that lets you know the timeframe of things: http://www.thenation.com/blog/...
