Joe Buscaino Has Momentum In City Council Race, But Could Unions Give Warren Furutani A Chance?

Tuesday update: The L.A. County Federation of Labor endorsed Furutani on Monday night, sharpening the biz-vs-labor narrative. More below.

Joe Buscaino came from nowhere to win the most votes in last week's primary in the 15th Council District.

Since then, the San Pedro cop been racking up endorsements, and he seems to have the edge heading into the Jan. 17 runoff against veteran Assemblyman Warren Furutani.

So what could stop him? How about the L.A. County Federation of Labor?

The Fed stayed out of the primary, because there were too many pro-labor candidates to choose from. But the powerful labor group is expected to weigh in for the runoff, with an endorsement likely to come on Monday.

If the Fed goes with Furutani -- a longtime labor stalwart -- that could give him a fighting chance.

The Fed's natural opponent -- the L.A. Area Chamber of Commerce -- also stayed out of the primary. But now that the field has been narrowed to two, the Chamber is also getting involved. At a breakfast this morning, the Chamber threw its support behind Buscaino.

That means the runoff could be shaping up as another classic business-vs.-labor battle, of the sort we've seen many times before in local races.

"There's an element of that, for sure," said Parke Skelton, Furutani's campaign strategist. "Buscaino's a longtime Republican, and I'm sure he's more aligned with that crowd than we are."

San Pedro is a labor bastion, with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union wielding substantial influence. So if the race breaks down along strict labor-vs.-business lines, that would work in Furutani's favor.

So it's not surprising that Buscaino's campaign doesn't see it going that way. First of all, they note that Buscaino is now a Democrat. More to the point, they stress that Buscaino has strong roots in the local working-class community.

"I really don't think it's a business-vs.-labor thing," said Brian VanRiper, Buscaino's spokesman.

But even if the Fed does mount a independent expenditure campaign on Furutani's behalf, VanRiper said, it may not make much of a difference.

"It's not gonna matter who does the biggest IE," VanRiper said. "It's who do people know? Who do people trust?"

Buscaino's biggest supporter in the primary was a union: the L.A. Police Protective League. He also has the support of two ILWU local presidents, while he and Furutani split the endorsement of the ILWU Southern California District Council. In the near future, Buscaino plans to shadow a longshoreman for a day.

"A lot of those people are Joe's friends and family," VanRiper said. "Those are people he grew up with. Joe's a working-class guy. He's a police officer. His wife's a teacher. His whole family are working class."

Buscaino's parents are Italian immigrants, and his father was a fisherman. He polled well in San Pedro, where most of the primary votes were cast, edging Furutani 29-23 in the first round. Buscaino's campaign has a poll showing him beating Furutani 49-32 in the runoff.

Furutani, who did well in Wilmington and Watts, will have to compete strongly in San Pedro to have a chance in the runoff. His campaign notes that Furutani's connection to the San Pedro tuna industry goes back three generations.

"His family worked on fishing boats," Skelton said. "We have a San Pedro story that's just as colorful as Joe's."

Update: The L.A. County Federation of Labor went ahead and endorsed Furutani on Monday night. From the release:
"Warren Furutani is an experienced and effective fighter for good jobs and working families," said Maria Elena Durazo, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor. "His impressive work has helped to bring thousands of middle class jobs to the community and to train our young people for productive careers. Warren Furutani will make a difference the first day he is sworn into office. Labor is proud to support Warren Furutani for Los Angeles City Council."
Furutani's campaign is playing up the business-vs.-labor contrast, noting Buscaino's endorsement from "large downtown business interests."

Waiting for Buscaino to fire back that Furutani is backed by the "downtown political machine." In San Pedro, "downtown" is an epithet.

Update 2: Even better, Buscaino touts the endorsement of United Firefighters of Los Angeles City, and its president, Pat McOsker, who finished fourth in the primary.

Joe is a Republican

Republicans hate Unions and want to bust them.

You can't just "Flip" Teams after years as a Republican srry

Joe is just like Flip Flop Mitt

On the "Democrat" issues when it gets you power and then flip flops.

Doesn't show any integrity and he loses my vote and I will spread the word.

We need fresh eyes and someone with the energy and vision to bring positive change to the Harbor area...someone who has not been bought by any special interest group.  Joe is not a politician but willing to become one in order to bring about change; he knows from his experience as a resident and policeman what our area needs.  This is not business versus labor.  Joe knows to support business, especially small business and, at the same time, work hard for jobs.  We've had just about all we can take from career politicians who like their perks and get complacent about working hard for their constituents.  This is certainly not the case with Joe Buscaino.  He is going to put people first and politics second.  A vote for Joe is a vote for action.  Union workers like myself (retired Teamster) should be 100% behind him as well as our business community.  We all want better lives and opportunities, and safe streets.

Looks like Furutani is another Paul Koretz.  Just what this City needs...NOT.

Joe is a nice guy, but unfortunately he's dumb as a pile of bricks and will be a puppet for people like Trutanich.  At least we know what Furutani is and what he'll do…Joe is a wild card that will be used by others for their agendas.  Have to say no to Joe.

Al...all these general statements without any specific facts make you sound like a Furutani Campaign staffer...

So both the Chamber of Commerce and Trutanich want Joe.  The only worse endorsement could come from the mayor or one of jerks on the council.

Trutanich just jumped on the bandwagon recently because he hopes Joe has coattails for his DA run...can't count that one!  Plus, Trutanich ain't Jack Weiss!

As far as the Chamber of Commerce, what's so bad about that?

You sound like a Furutani Campaign staffer...

Say it ain't so Joe. You cannot win if you are endorsed by Trutanich; he's the kiss of death to honesty, integrity and transparency. You will destroy all the hard work you have done to win top spot in the primary by being associated with Carmen the Clown Trutanich. Take a look at Trutanich's ACE Program and tell us you DO NOT agree that homeowners and small businesses should be fined to death by Trutanich's kangaroo courts. Tell us that you reject the grandstanding that Trutanich engages in; like claiming that he's "moving forward" with the prosecution of those responsible for the Bryan Stowe beating at Dodger Stadium, when in reality that's a felony crime prosecuted by the DA (who does NOT endorse Trutanich). Tell us that you are disgusted by a phony who one minute claims that there were 'criminal aspects' to AEG's handling of the Michael Jackson memorial just to grab headlines, and then a year later he drops the case and accepts a donation from AEG. Is this what you want to be associated with? Trutanich is a fake, a phony and the worst kind of politician. Don't let him destroy your candidacy. You are better than that.

Marco...Trutanich is not the candidate and this ain't the DA's race...Trutanich just jumped on the bandwagon recently because he hopes Joe has coattails for Nuch's DA run...so lay off Joe.  Nuch is only ONE johnny-come-lately endorser, and Joe would be stupid to turn down his endorsement...I'm not a fan of Nuch's, but he's no Jack Weiss, and that's why he got the City Attorney's seat to begin with!

Joe Buscaino just killed any chance he had to win this race with the announcement that City Attorney Carmen 'Nuchy' Trutanich has endorsed him. The kind of crazy campaign logic that possessed Joe to make such a fatal move will leave the thousands who supported Joe wondering WTF? Joe ran a clean campaign as a reformer, as someone who just wants to get the job done without all the usual back room political deals that always shaft voters. But now he's hanging out with the biggest city hall phony of them all, Trutanich the Clown? Message to Joe - your credibility is circling the big white bowl. You just got endorsed by a fake; a career politician who went around saying "I am here to do this job" (City Attorney) and then nine, that's right, nine months later, started his campaign to become District Attorney. Dump the Clown, Joe, while you still have a chance, before he drags you down the toilet bowl to his level.

Joe is such a nice guy I can't see him going this route but I know tons of people who support him will  let it be known that Furutani is the Mayor's person.  Joe's campaign was realy grass roots community members who commend his hard work in their district and for the youth. The way the Mayor has failed so miserably Los Angeles who in the world would want another one of croonies inside City Hall.
