Eric Garcetti and Wendy Greuel Lead in Mayor's Race, Zev Yaroslavsky Trails Slightly, Per Private Poll Results

According to the conventional wisdom, Zev Yaroslavsky is the presumptive front-runner in the race to be the next mayor of Los Angeles.

But a private poll, the results of which were obtained by the L.A. Weekly, turns that wisdom on its head.

The poll shows Councilman Eric Garcetti and Controller Wendy Greuel in a dead heat, with Yaroslavsky trailing slightly behind.

The poll was commissioned by Harvey Englander, a well respected political consultant who is not aligned with any of the candidates. Englander declined to release the results to the media, but they have been making the rounds in L.A. political circles over the past several weeks.

Englander also declined to comment after the Weekly obtained the results from another source. This is the first time they've been publicly reported.

As always with private polls, there are plenty of caveats to consider. For one thing, we don't know the methodology. Is this registered voters, likely voters, or what? In a mayoral election, which will have low turnout, there's a big difference. Also: We're still 16 months from the primary election. A poll at this stage doesn't predict anything.

"Early surveys are interesting, but most of the insiders don't take 'em too seriously," said Allan Hoffenblum, publisher of the California Target Book. "It's a name-ID thing at this point."

That said, this is still better than relying solely on fundraising totals to figure out who's up and who's down. So with all the grains of salt accounted for, let's dig in. We've got four scenarios to consider. Let's start with what seems most likely at the moment -- Yaroslavsky runs for mayor, but mall magnate Rick Caruso opts out.

Yaroslavksy in, Caruso out
Garcetti 12
Greuel 12
Yaroslavsky 10
Jan Perry 5
Austin Beutner 2

We're told that 900 people were surveyed,  which would put the margin of error at 3-4%.

So Yaroslavsky is trailing, but within the margin of error of the two leaders -- making this a three-way contest.

It's also not surprising to see Austin Beutner, the former jobs czar, at 2%. But that doesn't mean he'll stay there. The campaign hasn't started, and he'll be able to buy as much name identification as he needs when the time comes.

Now, let's see what happens if Rick Caruso gets in. That seems to stir things up a bit:

Garcetti 15
Greuel 10
Yaroslavsky 8
Caruso 5
Perry 5
Beutner 2

Caruso's presence appears to take votes away from Greuel and Yaroslavsky. For some reason, it also seems to boost Garcetti.

Keep in mind too, as long as we're hedging, that "undecided" is the runaway winner in all of these scenarios. So it's too early to take any of this very seriously, but it's still interesting.

Now, what if Yaroslavsky decides not to run? Only he seems to know what's in his mind at the moment. If he opts out, then it becomes more clearly a two-person race between Garcetti and Greuel.

Garcetti 18
Greuel 14
Caruso 5
Perry 5
Beutner 2

So all that Yaroslavsky vote seems to get distributed between Greuel and Garcetti, with none going to Caruso, Perry or Beutner.

Lastly, with Yaroslavsky out, what if Caruso also decides not to run? That doesn't seem to change the complexion of the race all that much.

Caruso's supporters go back to being undecided. Or maybe they vote for radio host Kevin James, who wasn't included in this poll.

Either way, it leaves Greuel and Garcetti undisturbed in the top two spots.

If there's a takeaway from this, it's that Garcetti and Greuel seem to hold their own in a name-ID battle with Zev Yaroslavsky.

In Greuel's case, she ran citywide in 2009, and spent $1.5 million to get her name out. So it makes sense that she'd still be strong.

Garcetti's never run citywide before. He is the president of the City Council, so that counts for something. But it would also be reasonable to assume that some of his strength comes from his father, former D.A. Gil Garcetti. Who knows what happens when people figure out that Gil Garcetti is not running for mayor.

As for Yaroslavsky, it has been several decades since he had a competitive race. Also, the Board of Supervisors doesn't get as much coverage as the City of L.A. So it's not a huge surprise that he's not crushing the field at this point.

Asked for comment, Yaroslavsky's longtime political adviser, Rick Taylor, said it was difficult to assess the poll without seeing more details. "It's great conversation, but it's hard to respond to conversation," Taylor said.

Los Angeles Economic Development  It is time to remake Los Angeles in the image of our boldest vision – a city of healthy communities with good schools and quality education, innovative companies in new and emerging sectors, quality open space, improved public transportation, a range of mobility and housing options; and above all, a prosperous and productive middle class equipped with the skills and education to create a better future.  It is time to get serious about designing a real economic development program linked to investments in healthy communities. I recently proposed to make Los Angeles the World Capital of Renewable Energy, Energy and Water Efficiency.  We have the climate, the manpower, the resources and technology.  We must promote energy and water efficiency in all sectors of LA’s economy.  This by itself can save the city billions and bring many jobs and economic growth into Los Angeles. We should promote real estate gentrification, affordable housing, urban infill building, economic development and clean tech sorted through the parts of redevelopment worth retaining and retooling combined with some newer elements of economic development necessary to realize this vision of healthy communities.   In the past five years many businesses in LA have closed down or moved out.  There are many vacant properties (commercial and residential).  Many people have moved out of LA.  They can not afford the cost of living, the high taxation, the stifling bureaucracy and varied rules and regulations that choke business development. We have a dysfunctional leadership in Los Angeles, an inefficient workforce, a demand for entitlement, and crippling budget deficits that are creating an environment of uncertainty for many companies who want to hire people, but are afraid to do so. Capital is stagnant and unattainable, frozen by an over swing of regulation and bureaucracy. We want to get Los Angeles working again, yet many of our wounds are self inflicted, as LA bureaucrats go to work every day piling more regulations and taxes onto the very businesses we ask to grow and create more jobs.  This situation must change, or we are doomed. It is imperative that we reverse this trend. YJ Draiman http://www.yjdraimanformayor.c...

The Candidate Forum on March 6, 2012, was hosted by the Crenshaw Chamber of Commerce, along with the Black Business Association, the Greater Los Angeles African American Chamber of Commerce, the Recycling Black Dollars, and the West LA Community Development Corporation.   No clear lead for Los Angeles Mayoral Candidates  YJ Draiman, a relatively unknown candidate for Mayor, found himself in a prime position on the lineup with an audience that was his, and he faced that opportunity by driving his point’s home with a forceful presentation that was persuasive in its delivery.

In a clear demonstration of his compassion for the audience, he capitalized on opportunities to relax and revel in the supportive nature, punching campaign bullet points for the audience, challenging the current administration responsible for standing in the way of success. YJ Draiman’s vision is to make Los Angeles the World Capital of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency.Kevin James found himself in position of addressing a restless audience and he turned it around by wrangling their discontent and rallying them around his observation, “As the sixth speaker, I get to listen to the others talk about what’s wrong with LA and now we get to talk about solutions. Kevin stated numerous times that only Draiman’s speech mirrored many of his points.” http://www.yjdraimanformay

Economic crises and unemployment Our current economic crisis is the number one concern of every American. It is time we exercise our constitutional right. It is a government by the people for the people. It makes no difference whether you are a Democrat, Republican, Libertarian or any other political affiliation. It is time America’s citizens take control of their destiny and country starting from the city government to the county, state and the federal government. All elected officials must be accountable to their community and its residents. Our current budget crisis was brought about by the current administration – do you want this to continue and lose city services. I am a soldier in the battle to restore fiscal sanity for our district and our city, improve the economic well being of the district and the welfare of all residents. YJ Draiman for Mayor of Los Angeles 2013

"Or maybe they vote for radio host Kevin James, who wasn't included in this poll."...seems like a rigged poll, then...I will probably support Kevin James because I don't like the others...an openly gay Republican who is a social moderate, has connections to political activists and guaranteed supporters through his politically-oriented radio talk show, used to be a federal prosecutor and an entertainment attorney, and can raise a ton of cash...wonder why they left him out of the survey (only major candidate to be left out!)...and why is City Hall Lobbyist Harvey Englander commissioning a survey, if not to leak it to the media and affect the race?  BTW, he's related to LA City Council Member Mitchell Englander...who's Mitchell endorsing for Mayor?  Harvey Englander was also former County DA Gil Garcetti's (Eric's dad) campaign consultant in the past, which creates a bias for Eric.  Mitchell Englander worked on Wendy Greuel's City Controller campaign.

And qualifications to run a city in need of massive economic reform....None.

Maybe Zev isn't leading in the polls because most Angelenos know that Zev is a crook, an even bigger crook than the current mayor.

Zev is a crook but no one in LA's history or future can beat the Mayor.  This wretch of a human has doomed the city more than most will ever know.  If they did, they would not have elected him to a second term or even consider his clones Garcetti & Wendy for Mayor.

Really, this says what L.A. politicos already suspected: Zev and Wendy are competing for the same moderate vote, heavily based in the valley, and if Zev runs, it'll hurt Wendy the most. Garcetti seems like he'll make the runoff either way. Rick and Austin will be competing for the same bloc of voters who believe that being an ultra-wealthy businessman means you'll know how to run a city.

The part about Garcetti getting more votes with Caruso in than without him makes no sense.  Not your fault for reporting the numbers you got, but it casts doubt on all the other numbers in the report.

Please, the LA Weekly can't be this ignorant and believe Harvey Englander the biggest lobbyist in LA is going to be truthful about his polling.   I network with more then the 900 people Englander polled.  I will emphatically state of the 1,000's I speak with at various community meetings and events the tone is NO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS or Wendy Greuel for Mayor especially because all she's done instead of her job is be in front of cameras. She's yet to collect the $543 million in debt owed the City.   Perry is a joke and behind pushing the corrupt AEG NFL Stadium deal, Garcetti is behind the pushing of the corrupt development in Hollywood and Yaroslavsky can't explain the millions Supervisors all get and spend. I guarantee if a internet poll went up to vote none of these clowns would be on it.  They would all be MINUS votes.  Thanks for the story Weekly though. It made for a good laugh.
