Detective Chris Bronowicki at the Lakewood Sheriff's Station says there are no leads in a tragic hit-and-run accident that took the life of young Compton high-schooler Calvin Charles last week. "Nobody's called" with information about the small, white pickup that hit him, says Bronowicki. "Not yet."

Charles was a 14-year-old student at Dominguez High. According to his Facebook activity, he was a major player on the school's sports teams -- and a memorial group for him identifies his jersey as No. 24.

He died around sundown on December 13, at approximately 5 p.m. ...

... while crossing Alondra Boulevard at Hunsaker Avenue. Detective Mark Campbell tells KTLA that Charles' body landed in the center divider, with his torso in the No. 1 lane.

City News Service reports that "the driver slowed to a stop, then sped away from the scene, fleeing west on Alondra."

Detective Bronowicki says he doesn't know why it took over a week for the hit-and-run to come to the media's attention. "Bout time this hit the news," says Los Angeles Times commenter Heather Munoz. "RIP Calvin Charles."

KTLA has more on the victim, whose friends and family say he played baseball and football, was trying out for basketball, was on the Dominguez High honor roll and wanted to be a lawyer.

"I'm going to try and look after his mom for him," Charles' best friend told the news station, choking back tears. "'Cause he's gone now, so I have to look out for her, and help his little brother."

Anyone with any information about last Tuesday's crime can call Detective Campbell or Bronowicki at (562) 623-3500.

How can anyone call if they don't know what happened or who to look out for? I just don't understand how there was no mention of this until yesterday, almost a full week after he died.

If this happened in Beverly Hills, it would be plastered all over the news...sadly, this happened in Compton where authorities can care less.
