Marijuana Dispensaries Could See New Law Enforcement 'Bureau' Under Proposed California Initiative

Some of the staunchest advocates of the retail marijuana trade want to create a new statewide police department strictly to keep an eye on pot shops -- and they want you to vote yes on it.

Say what?

The way the proposed California ballot initiative was explained to us, it sounds like medical marijuana advocates are sick of the piecemeal and, in their view, often unjust enforcement against collectives in the state. They filed their paperwork last week with the Secretary of State:

They call it the Medical Marijuana Regulation, Control, and Taxation Act. And it would create a "Bureau of Medical Marijuana Enforcement" to license and regulate medical cannabis sellers in the same way it's done in Colorado.

The Secretary of State has until Feb. 9 to approve the title and give the green light for signature gathering. The language of the proposed initiative was not yet available, but it contains the names of L.A. medical marijuana and [added]: former NORML leader [added]: and current Americans for Safe Access L.A. honcho Don Duncan and Bay Area UFCW (grocery workers' union) boss Ron Lind.

The group Americans for Safe Access is also on-board, and its lawyer, Joe Elford, described to the Weekly a little about what the initiative aims for:

The short of it is that it's to regulate and control medical marijuana dispensaries in California. There's a lack of clarity in California law regarding dispensaries, and that ought to be resolved.

ALL drugsshould be legalized and taxed. Alas, so profound a change is really apipedream. It does not take much intellect to ponder the implications for sucha radical change as that. Billions of tax dollars are wasted every month onthis "War on Drugs" with no tangible goal or purpose. Redirect thiseffort into something with utilitarian consequences. I'm sure we could allbenefit from the scientific discoveries made as a result of some redirectedfunds. And for all those muscle headed worthless Federal and State enforcementofficers: they can be yoked to a mill or some other purposeful device, and thenthey can do some meaningful work and get paid for what they really contributeto society. Let them, for once in their worthless lives, pull their own weight.But seriously, I believe we must "fall in" with the way crap getsdone in our modern society. We must build bureaucracy around the issue, thenit's entrenched with various interests. Let it meld somehow into the machineryof our inefficient agencies. That's the American way, baby.

I am for the industry calling for self regulation. I think it will help generate more public trust. And I agree with Guesto - cannabis is far less dangerous than alcohol. It's a shame that it is viewed with such suspicion.
