New Planet Found by NASA Could be Suitable For Humans (or Aliens?): SoCal Scientists Involved in Kepler 22b's Discovery

With reporting from Simone Wilson.

They're getting closer and closer to finding aliens in space, and not the kind who'll help you remodel your home for only $50 a day.

And while we here in journo land are psyched to get the occasional minor scoop or a mention in LA Observed (and that alone is worthy of a bender), our friends over at NASA's Caltech-bred Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena can say today that they helped to discover a frigging planet.

And not just any planet:

The oddly named Kepler-22b was the first to be discovered in a "habitable zone" in space and represents "a step closer to finding Earth-like planets," according to NASA.

Two people from Caltech/JPL worked on the project, including Kepler project scientist Nick Gautier, a JPL staffer.

Kepler photometer.

He told the Weekly he and his partner worked on data discovered at San Diego County's Palomar Observatory, which helped confirm the discovery and rule out nearby stars as the source of the light-based information that NASA absorbed through its Keppler satellite-based "photometer." Gautier:

The stuff we do at Palomar is really significant to make sure we get these planets right.

The discovery of a planet 600 light years away has gotten some news outlets all worked up about possible alien life (Yahoo News: "NASA Telescope Confirms Alien Planet in Habitable Zone"). The planet did show up in an area "where liquid water could exist," NASA states. And you know what that means:

Hot tubs. And that means procreation. And then life! Well, not really.

Whitney Clavin of JPL downplayed the earth-like qualities of 22b, telling the Weekly:

They do not know that this planet is habitable. It's one of the best candidates ... We're getting closer and closer to finding a planet with the right conditions to be habitable. This is the closest thing.

Sign us up for beachfront property. The discovery will be published in The Astrophysical Journal, NASA says.

Douglas Hudgins, Kepler program scientist, said, "This is a major milestone on the road to finding Earth's twin."

Let's hope she's just as pretty.

Of 1,000 potential planets discovered by Keppler, and of 54 said to be possibly inhabitable, 22b is the firstborn.

Gautier said the naming came down to the association with the Keppler project, a nearby star they call 22 (and thus "a"), and its planet ("b"). No Planet Nick.

"We haven't convinced NASA to name them after us yet," he said.

Our bodies may require a gravity that is equal to the Earth. If so, then it may never be possible to live on other planets. The future of humanity may therefore be in outer space, for example in rotating space stations.

this is amazing; but the thing is with all the tec that there is we havent even made artificial gravity so haw can peaple go ferther then saten with out running out of food water or fule.and with all theplents thats been found we can look but thats it the closest planet from earth isplanet gliese thats 20/25 light years thats imposable for us to travil that far without using all oue resouses up ,so we need help all this  about covering alien sightings ec why not spill the beans on everthing, the future wont change until we do ,hwo cares if peaple go nuts

i have question! why would be there's much land on the planet kepler than water?

do you think people can live in this planet without any too much water in to it?

people are so gullible. they saw a dot in the middle of some star 600 lighter years away, and now everywhere everyone is screaming ET. there is no evidence to support this this 'do on the sun' supports life.

Habitable? The universe has been dated to be 20 billion yo. The further we travel from the Big Bang, the likelihood of finding chill world, increases. Water is a prerequisite, not because it's good for us to drink, but because it has the strange property of, its solid state, being lighter than its liquid state. Ice floats, allowing locomotion beneath it. However, if, Kep22b( Keep2be? hope2be?) has an atmosphere, it might not be oxygen rich. It could be methane, CH4. Methane is one of the earlier atmospheres and on our planet, the ocean's bottom feeders, hang at the cracks on the ocean floor, to breathe in the methane. However, as we have learned from our own dinosaurs, there's a lot of junk out there and most of it doesn't care where it lands. When it does land, it generally results in an extinction level event. There might have been other life once, but all the cosmic activity would lower the odds.

Are there aliens on the new planet?

Joyce Russell Brocke

I think any life form on the new planet would qualify and probably there are lower life forms and plants at least , I think it would be wonderful to send a generational ship there with humans from here that could colonize it!

Joyce Russell Brocke
Joyce Russell Brocke

WE do not know what is on the new planet, it would require generational travel in order to get to it, a crew capable of having children starts out towards it as the older members of this crew age and die off the children are trained and educated in order to be the replacements for those crew members who aged out or else died off, it would be necessary for the ship to tow large barges that would be able to grow life sustaining food inside the barges and of course the plants would produce oxygen for breathing, a crew of about 160 would be necessary and the children born to the crew would be made into apprentices at an early age; ice that collects naturally on the exterior of the ship could give the necessary water, they already did have several projects  called biospheres but they cheated, so a diet would likely have to be a bit boring to our likes like eating tofu for most all the meals' and it may never reach destination in our lifetimes so I think we ought to send a probe first! but generational travel is the only feasible way to get there and the volunteers would have to know the risks that they likely will never return to planet earth and may not even arrive at the destination world during their lifetimes! i still think it would be worthwhile as an endeavor and I do not think this adventure should be for scientists only, mechanics and physicians are also needed and the crew should be primarily female; males are not as necessary because sperm can be brought in the frozen form, in the meanwhile we should still also try to get along on planet earth! I think computer technicians and some scientists should be the primary body of the crew!

Actually, Chris Blue, being a bit naive and not American, I just didn't understand it when I first read it.  I went back after reading your comment and have to agree.  Negative sterotyping/borderline racist I'd say and totally unnessary.

I completely agree! The first sentence was totally rude. there is no comedy in stereotyping people. I hope he didn't think that comment was funny.
