Occupy L.A. Cost City $1.7 Million: Report

Categories: Occupy L.A.

The LAPD reportedly spent $1.2 million on a midnight raid of Occupy L.A.
Updated at the bottom: One councilman wants to counter-sue protesters for the tab they ran up with taxpayers.

City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana was fed up earlier this week, waiting on long-overdue information from the mayor and L.A. City Council that he needed to compile an expense report for Occupy L.A..

Looks like they finally came through, the Friday before Christmas weekend.

Below, we've posted the preliminary report in its entirety. In it, Santana advises the council that of $2.3 million spent on Occupy L.A., just over half a million went toward "standard operating costs" that would have existed anyway. Making $1.7 million the running total "incurred as a result of the protest."

20111223 Cao Preliminary Cost Estimate for Occupy La Protest

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa had originally put the cost of restoring City Hall lawn at $400,000, and the police raid at $700,000. It now appears that both of those were undershoots, as outrageous as they seemed.

Update: The
LA Daily News
spoke with City Councilman Dennis Zine about how the city plans to make up for the costs. His solution sounds a little vengeful:

Zine said he will ask City Attorney Carmen Trutanich to look into a possible civil suit against Occupy L.A. "They are suing us, so I think we should look at filing a suit to try to recover whatever we can," Zine said.

"We had a lot of officers, police and General Services, who were watching the occupation," Zine said. "Most of them were on overtime and those costs add up quick."

Remember the good old days, when city pols handed out ponchos and told protesters to stay as long as they liked? Heh. Now, on top of all the cash stolen from the 99 percent by the banksters on Wall Street, our elected officials now want to fiscally punish the only Angelenos brave enough to complain about it.

Merry Christmas, y'all.

Send the bill to the 1%.  After all, everything was done on their behalf.  Now, stop whining.

The LA City Attorney's office under the "leadership" of Carmen Trutanich apparently should face additional budget cuts because he is wasting public funds by going after a losing proposition and gives the impression that his staff is "unoccupied."

The City Council passed a resolution supporting Occupy LA and its protest on the City Hall lawn.

Acting as President of the City Council, Eric Garcetti along with his colleague, Councilman Bill Rosendahl told the protesters to "stay as long as you want."

The Mayor of Los Angeles handed out raincoats.

The leadership of Los Angeles was well aware of the violations of Park hours and allowed the overnight use of the park for 2 months.

There is no case!

The Occupy protesters need an attorney such as Gerry Spence and counter-sue the City of LA if Trutanich continues to act against the best interests of the Citizens of Los Angeles and goes after Occupy LA.

Hello, One young woman with 70,000 signatures got the banks to not increase the ATM fees, that's better than all the protesters did together...

They would get better attention if they offered to plant a tree for each sign in the recent fire areas.

This is the new millennium, they did the walk ,now do the talk, better to get lobbyists than strike.

The whole point of the protest is that money must be gotten out of politics.  Why would lobbying solve things when there's always going to be more money lobbying the other side? That's the reality here.  And with the pepper spray still going full force (from a guy on horseback in Albany no less!)---it doesn't look like the politicians in our town or any other are in the mood to listen to protesters with the respect they deserve. And they're really not a bunch of hippies--I mean, on this video you have people like the retired economics professor from MIT who says "We're really in trouble if things don't change."   http://vimeo.com/31556859

"We had a lot of officers, police and General Services, who were watching the occupation," Zine said. "Most of them were on overtime and those costs add up quick." Why were they watching. Such protests occur all over the world without the police infiltrating and big brother watching every move. When will the media quit going to this big fat fake to get his dumb opinions. Toss this man out of City Hall and we'll recover millions in the long run. He is double dipping without adding any value to the city.

Anyone that falls for this ridiculous propaganda by the authorities is dumb. The cops *use* #ows to justify massive new expenditures, like 300 officers coming in on golden time to raid a camp where 15 people are sleeping. They are just padding their pockets at the taxpayer's expense and blaming Occupy folks for it.

How much does it cost the hosting cities when there is a Political Party National Convention? or when a city hosts a major convention or other festivities?  Does the taxpayer pay for that too?

Sounds like  City Councilman Dennis Zine needs a lesson in civics and the U.S. Constitution, in particular the 1st Amendment.

Zine is a former L.A.P.D. motor cop, and full-time "putz," double-dipping at the taxpayer's expense. He's like a bad cold that just won't go away. In fact, he's still a reserve L.A.P.D. cop who likes to play hard-nosed Copper, put on his official "Police" jacket, and parade around in front of the new's cameras like he's actually part of the solution. Sad indeed to witness such a sight. Imagine this cynical, stern, intellectually challenged, "my way or the highway," old toad as Mayor!

The idiot is running for City Controller.  A motorcycle cop who now pretends to know accounting,  financial management and fraud having done absolutely nothing about it during his 12 years tenure in City Hall.  Lose him ASAP.

I know where we can get the funds: cut the LAPD budget. They simply do not need high-tech military grade equipment, as having it encourages its use. Little boys will always want to try out their new toys.     Also, anyone wanna bet that LAPD is grossly overcharging the city? Cops lie. Look at the claimed street value of any large drug bust, then do the math for yourself; it's easy to see that they routinely use misinformation to try to convince us that they're "heroes."     The police like to tell us that they are "held to higher standards." B.S. --- as if they are held to any standards at all.

Maybe they shouldn't have had so many police there? Occupy started a modern movement thru social media, I'm sure they could use a phone to call the cops if there were any problems.

Wow, what a bunch of jackasses. Merry Christmas! How many homeless and mentally ill people did the LAPD and Sheriffs bring down to the Occupy site---where the people were fed and sheltered?  How many meals did they feed people for free?  How much does the city owe the Occupiers for providing these social services? How much does the city owe the Occupiers for smashing apart their library (How many books were in it? Two thousand?)  You  know personally? I can't understand where's the coverage of the fact that the protesters are actually suing the city--as they SHOULD--for the city's unlawful detainment of them, sometimes in solitary for days, on misdemeanor charges!!  Or how about the city's questionable representation of taxpayers who might like to see less than 200 MILLION DOLLARS lost to fraud in two years (As the Controller reported)! Or how about if the taxpayers would like to see our money not held by the very banks the city is suing for fraud?  Where are the representatives of the people to speak up against this? They were at City Hall--where they belong!! Every night! Serving food for the hungry and GIVING PEOPLE A FORUM TO SPEAK about civic issues.  They ought to get a medal! Teachers ought to be bringing their kids down NIGHTLY to see what real civics in action looks like.  And for this 80-year-old women get bound in zip-ties, left on buses and told to stay their old asses home.  This is what this city has sunk to---and yet the taxpayers are expected to put up with (as the Weekly's reported) a glaring feild of electronic billboards blazing at the 10/110 interchange; the construction and insane cramming of a NFL *used 8 times yearly* stadium that oh, isn't supposed to cost the taxpayers anything....just whatever it will cost to mop up all the dead bodies from the accidents on the freeway interchange, right?  Thank GOD for Occupy LA.  I feel represented for the first time in ..well, maybe ever! Because I know I won't get ignored (like when I write or call representatives now)if I've got something to say; because I know people will talk about the stuff they won't talk about on the Teevee or apparently even here at the Weekly; dear god has the entire world gone completely f'in bonkers that they really think it's OK for the banks to steal from us (as they are ....29T says Ford Found study..?!!!) and the protesters are the criminals because they did what it took to get the word out---camp?! What were they supposed to do? You know how long people have been protesting?  SINCE 2003 when millions of them got into the streets over the Iraq war.  They've been protesting, wrighting books, speaking on radio, being kicked off the TV (a la Donohue) and NOTHING WORKS. So all of you jackasses who think protesting is something you should do without any kind of civil push-back (nonviolent resistance like refusing to move) ---what are you, high?  Too much of California's finest?  Someone had to do something to get attention! Occupy is doing it! And I can't thank them enough.

People who find a typo or misspelling and then point it out as an invalidation of an otherwise sound argument whether they agree with the argument or not are really doing nothing more than showing their own ignorance and insecurities regarding their own critical thinking. Thanks for the laugh. Maybe you should write a book? You seem to have the grammatical nuances down.

The decision to put the Police in orvertime status was not made by OccupyLA. The money that was spent in degrading and harassing people could have been better spent in providing housing for the homeless, food for the hungry, and creating meaningful way to build civic engagement.Where are the adults in the room? Where is Justice and Love in all of this? Have we lost our collective hearts and souls throughout all of this fanfare? Do we have to engage in lost contradictions towards each other? Will the real humans please stand up?

Eiko Huh

Yeah well I'm sure #OccupyLA could come up with their own estimate of how much they have paid in taxes and how much has NOT been done. Increases in salaries and endeavors that favor the politicians financially over decisions in the interest in justice & such

Hey, they caught the hippie freak who poured the paint on the fountain; he should have to pay out of his own pocket for its restoration.

Making him pay out of his own pocket will actually help him to mature and behave like a grown up in the future. It will be doing him a big favor.

Once LAPD officers start paying out of their own pockets for their crimes and abuse and civil rights violations I'll support this position

Expected response from typical (limited intelligence) occupier mindset: "Make someone else pay."

Hey Mr. Info, while speaking of taking responsibility: How much did the Tea Party cost taxpayers? ZERO!

Mario Brito said he would pay to re-sod the lawn so he should be held to his word.

The bill for Occupy LA should be sent to SEIU Local 721 at 500 south Virgil Ave, Los Angeles.

I support this position.
