Occupy the Rose Parade's Octopus Float Is 70 Feet of Awesome (PHOTOS)

Update, January 2: "Occupy the Rose Parade: 5,000 Protesters, Giant Octopus Fail to Make Live TV."

Pasadena's annual Rose Parade is on Monday! To pre-party, we were totally planning to write about the Natural History Museum's first-ever dinosaur float, a gorgeous menagerie of T-Rexes and long-necks. Then we got a glimpse of a beast that could swallow those wimp-osauruses whole.

We're talking about Occupy Octopus (yes, that's his name; yes, he'd make an amazing beanie baby), a 70-foot-long crowd puppet made entirely of recycled plastic bags. The giant sea creature will hover over a band of occupiers for their Occupy the Rose Parade march this coming Monday. And though he's just going viral as of this morning, it appears the octopus was born over a month ago...

... for a protest outside L.A. City Hall. Those were better days for Occupy L.A., when their camp was still a thriving (if greasy) mini city, and their free speech wasn't restricted to a tiny little "zone" on the west steps.

But the octopus' big comeback at the Rose Parade can hopefully revive some of that pre-raid vigor (from within) and media attention (from the sidelines, and on New Year's broadcasts all over the world).

Here's the November 20 video of the octopus' rainy debut.

Gotta love how hard occupiers get into character -- bobbing up and down so Octupy's tentacles undulate just right. And float organizer Pete Thottam, a central figure in Occupy L.A., says occupiers just held another "dress rehearsal" yesterday.

The animal they chose isn't arbitrary. The uploader of the above video writes: "Fat cats and greedy pigs make great symbols of corporate greed, but multi-armed octopi speak to the ways in which corporations operate." More on that, from the Los Angeles Times:

The octopus, said activist Mark Lipman of Los Angeles, represents Wall Street's stranglehold on political, cultural and social life, with tentacles "that reach into your pocket to get your money and a tentacle to get your house."

Octupy's semi-rebellious relationship with the very patriotic, very feel-good event is a delicate one. Thottam tells the Times how important this Rose Parade cameo will be: "We recognize that this is a historic, iconic event geared toward middle America and the family."

Of course, Occupy the Rose Parade has not been granted an official slot in the parade, and will have to fall in line with the nutters in back. We won't get the police-versus-protester dramatics of the City Hall raid, either -- Pasadena cops say they've spoken with occupiers, and they expect everything to go smoothly and peacefully this January 2.

But all politics aside, he's a magnificent creature. Below are the best photos of him we could find.

(Along with his inanimate brethren -- a 250-foot by 50-foot blowup of the U.S. Constitution called "We the People," and a 50-foot by 50-foot "We the Corporations" spinoff. They'll also make a cameo at the parade.)

I thought the Rose Parade has a requirement for the flower content of floats. Where's the flowers?

ShakinBoots
ShakinBoots

The dilusional occupiers seemed to think they were a part of the parade. They were not. They were only given permission to march the route with that 70ft PIECE OF CRAP once the parade was over since the streets would still be closed, but they were NEVER part of the parade itself.

They, however, DID disrespect spectators and floats and bands before them by trying to out yell the bands.

LMAO respect them? You've got to be kidding.

NOEL
NOEL

why should ANYBODY respect occupy (and most don't) when they don't respect the areas where they build their encampments, the businesses surrounding those areas, and the public's right to have full access to those areas...they shout down speakers with whom they do not agree...where's the respect in that?

Jim Olson
Jim Olson

It appears your still getting your mis-information from corporate news, Noel. I am occupy. I am 71 y/o. I respect and care for all public space. I share it willingly with all comers. I always leave an area cleaner than when I arrive. I have never shouted down any speaker. In the actions in which I have been involved the police forcibly removed people. forcing them to leave behind their property. The police then destroyed that property and threw it into the streets, creating a mess. I personally witnessed this.Let me state that again, the police who are sworn to protect and defend all citizens destroyed thousands of dollars of other people's property and then told the media to report that the protesters left a mess. You owe it to me, a person who has worked hard every day of his life, and who is on the street protecting your interests whether you know it or not, to get your facts straight and stop demeaning my efforts on your behalf. Please educate yourself before shooting off your mouth and displaying what an ignorant tool you are.

ShakinBoots

So anytime someone disagrees with you, you call them ignorant or a liar? How VERY self righteous and uppity of you. Is name calling all you've learned in 71 years or are you just going senile?

Do you think non-supporters haven't read ows websites, supporter blogs, followed their twitter pages, or had personal interactions with occupiers? Many of us have come to our opinions based directly on statements and actions of the occupiers themselves. You can't forever blame "main stream media" as you all LOVE to to. Take responsibility for what you say and do and then maybe people could at least respect that.

All I've seen you do in these comments is call people names and ask for quotes and documentation while you offer NONE. Go ahead and give some facts to back up your opinion. Don't think we're going to believe you and respect you're nonsense just because your old. You still need to earn that, and calling everyone who disagrees with you a liar or an "ingoramus" earns you no respect and no willing listeners to your cause.

We have ALL seen the destruction occupiers have left. It was THEIR choice to leave their crap everywhere as they were given PLENTY of warning and opportunity to pack up and leave. YOU sir are the liar here. We have all see the truth. PD shouldn't have had to carry ANYBODY out, if those fools would have just realized their time in the park served its purpose and it was time to m.ove on. Instead, they chose to stay, cost tax payers MORE money, and use whatever resources they had left to post unnecessary bail, all so they could high five eachother. NONE of that stopped corporate greed. You are all dilusional.

Well, it seems those involved with Occupy haven't read their radical history....The Octopus by Frank Norris is a class story:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T..."It describes the raising of wheat in California, and conflicts between the wheat growers and a railway company. Norris was inspired by the role of the Southern Pacific Railroad in events surrounding the Mussel Slough Tragedy. It depicts the tension between the corrupt railroad and the ranchers and the ranchers' League. The book emphasized the control of "forces" such as wheat and railroads over individuals."Norris also wrote The Pit which is about wheat speculation and the Chicago Board of Trade and the damage done by someone manipulating the market.

Or perhaps Mark Lipman rather than being ignorant of the book,is using the title without giving credit.

C.M. or B.M.?
C.M. or B.M.?

Small company can have many meanings. Saying "Tech Company"-- doesn't "illustrate" how simple or complex a business model is, or what "technical" aspects are involved-- unmanned drones-- B-12 Stealth Bomber parts-- desalinization-- solar energy-- microchips-- computer software programs? And to be "snarky," why should I think of it if you're thinking of it for me? Didn't Jobs steal everyone elses ideas-- and vice versa? (relax just joking) "You cited "recent college graduates incapable of spelling at a middle-school level"  as one of the "resons" (another bad joke) people are not hired at your firm. I don't care what your vetting process is; personally, if they just graduated from college, I'd give them a hundred word vocabulary test, and make them write an essay about their potential to contribute to the company-- but then that's just me. If they could pass that process, I'd then invite them to the actual interview. Then a background check. Then I'd test them in the real world during a probationary period with a signed employment contract stating the exact terms. What I did do was call into question the educational system and the probability or improbability of your statement. Possibile, impossible or improbable? By your testing process, you seem to employ logic, semantics, and spelling in one package. You did not originally state that. Based upon your original statement specifically relating to spelling abilities, I was merely engaging in probability theory, and found it improbable but not impossible. As you state, "there are jobs out there, not a lot, and they may not be easy to obtain"-- and your point?   That blanket statement doesn't address the very common issue of age discrimination, harassment, or unfair or illegal termination based upon the idea of generating more business profit at the expense of a worker's employment security-- age related or not. However, it has been my empirical experience that employers generally shy away from older workers unless they are exploiting them in lower level jobs, such as a "Greeter" for Wal-Mart, etc. They view them as higher risks on many levels-- health care, workers' rights, wage differentials. Many employers feel that it is wiser to hire an inexperienced worker or recent college graduate over a seasoned worker or advanced degree candidate because they do not have to pay them as much; they won't "jump ship" as readily; they are more easily moldable and unquestioning, and they are more willing to embrace a company's questionable ethics and still remain loyal. Additionally, compensation issues relating to health and retirement are less troublesome and are usually addressed further down the road.  If I offended you with the sketchy comment, I apologize. I just would like to be able to verify that a "small" company-- other than governmental-- could actually be in a position to hire 100 people in a year. I sure haven't seen it lately. In fact, I've witnessed the exact opposite in all sectors of the economy.  I wish you success.

Anonymous

What company hires more than 100 in a year....a tech company in California. How simple is that business model. What didn't you think of that? As for the spelling issue, I give everyone interviewing a simple test (here are 12 words, which 4 are misspelled). The people who show promise figure out there are actually 5 misspelled words. There are jobs out there, not a lot, and they may not be easy to obtain. Not so sketchy is it?

C.M. Or B.M?
C.M. Or B.M?

I wasn't actually buying it either. I00 employees hired in one year? What "small company-- outside of the war-driven, privatized military/industrial complex-- can afford to do that in these trying financial times? I want the business model. That in-and-of itself would be valuable. The recent college graduates who cannot spell at a middle school level comment seemed possible, but improbable. How did they even get into college? How did they write the many papers and essays required by the course work? It would seem either college professors/administrators are at fault for passing them in the course work, or they are on sports scholarships (joke for all the hyper-sensitive Haters). If this is actually the case, college should be redesigned. Conversely, I am sure many potential employees could be farmed from unemployed 40+ individuals who do have adequate language and computer skills, and are not Facebook or iTunes directed. Of course, many businesses shy away from hiring older, experienced workers with competent brains because they view them as potential problems and "un-moldable" precisely because they actually can reason and think. In a lot of businesses, that cognitive ability is viewed as a negative risk factor. It all seemed a bit sketchy to me.

Jim Olson of Maine, you called this person an ignorant troll, another a liar, another an ignoramus. What a miserable human being you are! And why would anyone give you the name of the company they work at, especially after the happy way you asked them? Obviously you are a wretched old man whose balls stopped working a long time ago. Can't you find something useful to do in Maine, like go milk a cow? And since you really don't like it when people post using anonymous....

Actually Dave, I hired over a 100 people at my small company this year, so I am not part of the problem, but thanks for your condescending comment. What keeps people from getting a job at my company usually involves recent college graduates incapable of spelling at a middle school level, writing a decent resume, or the inability to understand that the job requires knowledge of Word and Excel as stated in the offer. They think that being able to use Facebook and iTunes equates to moderate computer expertise in a work environment.

Occupiers are more like your neighbors then the media would have you believe. They are mostly lower and middle class folks who are mad as hell and don't want to take it anymore. They are the folks who have little left to give to the middle class squeeze.

ShakinBoots
ShakinBoots

"Occupiers are more like your neighbors then the media would have you believe." More blaming it on the media...smh. Do occupiers ever take responsibilites for their own actions? I don't know where you live, but my neighbors aren't shitting and peeing on our lawn, leaving trash everywhere, putting graffiti on our walls and trees, and they're not crackheads like half of the people were at OLA. I saw for myself, not through the eyes/filter of "the media".

ShakinBoots

How the hell do you think you can tell me how I "always see people". You don't know shit about me so stfu.

And you have GOT to be kidding with that ridiculous "honor" comment. A little full of yourself aren't you. Your precious little comments are not an "honor".

You try WAY to hard to sound like you know what's up, but the more you say the clearer it is that you don't know shit.

"Right" yourself dude. You don't know me or where I'm coming from. Your condescending, self-righteousness doesn't dismiss other people experiences.

And why the hell would THESE be the commonts I was talking about, when I said that refering to a completely different article. Smart!

My comments have been consistant. I do not support the idiotic counter-productive tactics of ows. Look at yourself...do you really think you're winning people over by putting words in their mouths and making blind assumptions about them?

I don't care how mad you get, you can not FORCE people to agree with you, and you definately won't win any by calling them childish names and liars.

Yes, the whole world IS watching and they're watching you and all your cronies bullying people, using dumbass tactics that everyone but you, knows won't accomplish anything.

As you proudly recite your ows resume, you ASSUME that I or anyone else put off by ows tactics, haven't done shit. You don't see a problem with that? You need to think about that.

I see these must be the comments your talking about and how your agree with OWS... right.

I occupied 80% of the total occupation I lived there i helped publish the paper. i spoke with parks and rec's the mayors office the news everybody. This movement as small as it is is attempting to address HUGE issues. doing so down the street from SKID ROW prolly didnt help but unlike some we chose to deal with it. they are people man like you and me they struggle with real issues. show some compassion. or you can keep running because it is convenient. one day you may not be able to run and will need someone to represent for you... it can happen

ShakinBoots
ShakinBoots

You do have a good imagination, I'll give you that, but your psychic and/or intuition is lacking...big time.

Not that it's any of your business, but for the sake of making my point that just because someone doesn't support ows paranoia, bullying, and other tactics, does not mean that person (or people) are government loving drones. It IS possible to agree with many of ows grievences while also finding them incapable of creating positive change. So with that said....

I was laid off from my job 2 years ago and it has been a struggle to say the least. I am born and raised in LA, never living in the valley, never considered "rich" or wealthy. I am an artist and a musician. Not exactly the stuff a rich conservative is made of now is it? I supported ows in the beginning and even checked out the camp. Talked with numerous occupiers, read countless ows created websites, followed their twitter pages, watched their ustreams, etc. It is the occupiers themselves, who have made me see they don't represent me. I will support REAL change and intelligent tactics. I will support wholeheartedly, any campaign who has the logic, strategy, forsight, and tactics to really effect change. It's as simple as that. In the meantime, I get called a conservative, a liar, a troll my countless occupy supporters, whic,h has only confirmed my choice to not support THAT particular group.

C.M. Or B.M?
C.M. Or B.M?

ShakinBoots is obviously an agent provovocateur. Probably, just another power-hungry and frustrated TO who likes to "ride Boots," and I don't mean in a good way. I'm guessing she doesn't even in live in the city where she earns her pay-- probably scurries to the safety of Simi Valley, Santa Clarita, or Thousand Oaks-- where she can live in her fantasy world of peace, happiness, and prosperity for all. And of course, she's pack'n.

CiMaFool
CiMaFool

What? Just.. what are you talking about? There is no point in discussing the actual sequence of words you have written and how crazy they sound, instead it is more imperative to discuss your reasoning. I am worried that you feel threatened by people protesting and think they "should be dealt with", which is a threat and implies the use of some form of violence - if you did not mean the use of violence then you should have written "they should be reasoned with". This is America. The People have a right to protest and express themselves. You, too, have a right to express yourself - but you do not have the right to threaten harm against others, nor do you have the right to deny others their freedoms or liberties through McCarthyesque tactics.
