Anthony Almeida Harassed by Fellow LAFD Firefighters Over His Catholic Priest Sex Abuse Claims: Department Will Pay $500,000

Looks like the boys in the station had quite a laugh over firefighter Anthony Almeida's legal claims that he was abused by a Catholic priest.

And now the Los Angeles Fire Department must pay nearly $500,000 because officials failed to stop the razzing.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission today announced:

The Los Angeles City Fire Department will pay $494,150 and implement widespread anti-harassment training to settle federal charges of discrimination ...
The EEOC in L.A. says "fellow firefighters at his station" ... "employed deeply offensive comments of a sexual and religious nature" after learning that he had filed suit against the church alleging abuse by a priest:
... Several co-workers mocked him for that, using explicit and offensive religious and sexual epithets.

What's more, the EEOC alleges, the LAFD "failed to adequately halt or address it." On top of all that? Almeida faced "retaliatory discipline" for apparently cooperating with an unrelated EEOC inquiry.

The cost for the department is $494,150, plus it has to "provide widespread live anti-harassment training to all fire station chiefs and their subordinate staff, impacting every fire station in the city of Los Angeles," according to the EEOC.

maybe if more harassers and bullys are made to pay  for their cruelty they will stop.. would like to see some of the catholics who  harass child victims and others who make allegations against their "wonderful" priests have to pay for rallying around the perp and supporting him over those who dare to expose him to protect others..  they need a wake up call..the world outside the catholic church is outraged at these disgusting people who enable this to go on..

There are two sides to every story.  LAFD Engineer Anthony Almeida pulled a fast one on the EEOC.  None of his co-workers made insensitive remarks or any other remarks regarding his abuse to him.  Engineer Almeida has a long and storied history making allegations against his co-workers and supervisors.  It is a shame that he suffered abuse at the hands of a Catholic priest, but it is also a shame that Tonys co-workers have been the subject of false allegations.

It is bad enough that kids who have been sexually abuse by priests are given a life sentence of pain and trauma, but it is doubly bad for this victim's co-workers to make his life even more painful..

It is bad enough that sex abuse victims are given a life sentence of pain and trauma... but it is unthinkable that fellow workers would cause more pain to this victim.

Does anyone know of sex abuse reports in Los Angeles involving Jesuit Fr. Jerold Lindner, who taught at Loyola High School, Los Angeles from 1982 to 1997. Does anyone know if Fr. Lindner has returned for a class reunion at Loyola High. The Jesuit Order paid $2 million to settle lawsuits involving Fr. Lindner’s alleged sex abuse of minors. Fr. Lindner was also accused of making death threats.

Lindner had 16 years as chairman of the English department at Loyola High School, a prestigious Catholic prep school. There, he launched nearly two dozen after-school programs for students, including a chess club and renaissance club. Lindner also served as an assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 1193 at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, near the Loyola High campus and 4-miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles. Lindner has TESOL credentials.

We urge anyone who may have been harmed by Jerold Lindner at Loyola High or the Boy Scouts to call police officials, not church officials. Sex crimes, however old, should be investigated by the independent professionals in law enforcement, not the biased amateurs in church offices.

Congratulations to Anthony for pursuing justice in this case.  Insensitive statements, comments, and behaviors must be challenged, and those making such must be held accountable.  Now there are half a million reasons why sexual abuse victims must be treated compassionately.

I am surprised and saddened to hear this.  What is it about sexual abuse of children that macho males feel compelled to challenge?  Glad this survivor came forward and glad he sued and won!  He's a hero, as is every survivor.

This is so sad.

Those who have been sexually abused by a priest go through enough lifelong pain and embarrassment....they don't need anymore piled on top of it by their fellow workers.
