Marijuana Juicing is The Next Big Thing (or a Big Waste of Cash)

Weed can be smoked, vaporized and eaten.

But a practice advocated by Dr. William Courtney, an M.D. from Willits, California seems to be gaining traction in 2012:

He wants you to juice your marijuana. That's right, put that valuable green stuff in a blender and drink it up like a banana milkshake. Mmm.

And the best benefit (allegedly)?

No high to speak of.

It's true. You don't get stoned. Only broke.

But before you tell us that you might as well put your paycheck in the blender along with that Mary Jane, hear out the good doctor:

He believes that Cannabidiol (CBD), a key cannabinoid in pot, has illness-killing healing power that can be destroyed by smoking marijuana.

But drinking weed brings out the good stuff while destroying the plant's "psychoactive" buzz.

In a video the doc says:

It's a vegitable. It's not psychoactive until humans heat it.

He has presented anecdotal evidence of the miracle of raw cannabis, claiming that at least one patient is all the better for it. We say go for it: Stop getting high and your life will magically get better:

You'll start showing up to things on-time, you'll stop eating Cheetos, and a new job will magically come into view.

It better pay well, though: Doing shots of certain strains of "Kush" (at nearly $300 an ounce) won't be cheap.

Marijuana leaf is'nt worth shit. Its the buds that will cost you. Alot of growers throw the leaves out. While the buds may have more cannabinoids, the leaves make a lovely juice!

Marijuana is one kind of drug and you have to consume it under the supervision of expert doctors. I heard that it is not harmful but you have to take precautions.

What I took away from actually watching the video (not sure the author did or paid attention while watching) was that the juicing is really just the broad leafs of the plant not the buds.

Therefore you are using a part of the plant that normally wouldn't be smoked anyway. It's interesting and definitely deserves more research.

Wonder if hemp milk which you can buy at many health food stores has the same properties.

The writer is very ill-informed. Obviously trying to poke fun at an important medical breakthrough!

I am not a patient of Dr. Courtenay's, but I have followed his research, and have tried his juicing regime using fresh raw leaves from a high CBD Cannabis plant.

I can state for fact that there is no high whatsoever using Cannabis this way. It is definitely not intended for recreational use, as it doesn't produce the effect 'stoners' are looking for. Juicing Cannabis is along the same as juicing Wheatgrass, to be seen as an essential dietary suppliment.

Since it is a fibrous leafy plant, it requires a Masticating juicer (one suitable for Wheatgrass). But one can add other vegetables to the juice, which cut the taste completely. I tend to add fresh ginger, carrots, apples to mine for a lovely taste!

I have a serious auto-immune disease (psoriatic arthritis) and have been on practically every pharmaceutical a doctor can prescribe to try and control the disease. I have noticed dramatic changes on this juicing regime, along with other general health benefits, so much that I am no longer on ANY pharmas! I am deadly serious!

Now I'm no doctor, so all I can report is what I personally see, but I find this approach is very effective at working at the root of the disease instead of simply treating the symptoms.

Just my 2cents worth.

"It better pay well, though: Doing shots of certain strains of "Kush" (at nearly $300 an ounce) won't be cheap."you idiot... it states that the actual bud doesn't have to be used and that most of the CBD is found in the leaves which is normally thrown away by growers anyway.

Im sorry .. this cat has a Job?

Raw Plant is what they're juicing, not Kush Nug's.

Where does LA weekly find this talent?

Feel free to do whatever you want but I would say the jury is still out on this one.  And the folk that did the video don't really seem to be for full legalization.  You also need an expensive juicer to do this else you will destroy it: leaves don't really juice like, say, apples: and tend to bind up the juicer.  I wrote them for advisement on an appropriate juicer and got no reply.

Raw cannabis doesn't get you high.  It needs to be heated or cooked before the psychoactive ingredients take effect.  However, juicing raw cannabis is still a healthy thing to do.  Lot's of great research being done.

Power of Prevention, what can this medication provide tomorrow by being utilized today?

CBDA doses, 600 mg, 15-20 leaves per day, juiced, fresh, local, and raw, could prevent the need for operations, medications, sick days, loss of years to quality of life, immobility, cognitive decline....

The toxic side effect is zero. The drug-drug interactions and adverse side effect or drug reaction or allergy to the green juice is remarkably low, by any standard of imagination.

Nurses and caregivers will praise the benefits this plant would offer, because it would make their jobs easier. Less to clean up, less pain, more sleep, and less stress.Ignorance is negligence, not bliss.

Nothing against 10 mg THC it just becomes uncomfortable around 20 mg and by 30 mg most  cannot get out of the couch a swear they will never eat 3 brownies again. On the other hand or concurrently if you prefer, the sickest just eat the raw flower, those less ill blend it to improve palatability and therefore compliance. With new 20+% weight to weight CBDA strains a small amount of bud will provide the 600 mg of CBD approved of as an Investigative New Drug / IND by the FDA. This correlates with the low end of the "Effective oral human dosage schedule" detailed in the US Dept of HHS patent 6,630,507 in 2003. A review of the 'oxadative associated diseases' listed in that patent reveals a wider range of utility for cannabis in addition to recreational.  It is true that the dispensary system prefers to sell 10 mg does of THC and that with a Harlequin strain that is 8%w/w CBDA to 8%w/w THCA, use of enough cannabis to provide 600 mg of CBDA would also include 600 mg of THCA not psychoactive but with a street value of $600. From over 10,000 patient interviews I have acquired quite a bit of anecdotal evidence from a group of individuals the majority of who grow their own otherwise they would not be able to consume cannabinoids at the level recommended by the DHHS, FDA and myself.  One of my anecdotal groups suffer from Dravets, or Severe Myoclonic Epilepsy in Infancy / SEMI who suffer from multiple seizures daily and have been treated with a very wide range of traditional and experimental medications who are finding relief from this condition for the first time in their life. The vast majority of the benefits are not associated with the traditional 10 mg of THC but occur when the plant is used at the dose recommended in the patent Cannabinoids as Anti-Oxidants and Neuroprotectants. The issuance of patents is classically based on the demonstration of Utility and market value. Additional research can be found in the ICRS abstracts and at Cannabis International, http://cannabisinternational.o...

What a snarky for the sake of being snarky "article" written by someone who adheres to stoner stereotypes (You'll start showing up to things on-time, you'll stop eating Cheetos, and a new job will magically come into view) and writing platitudes. Shame on you LA Weekly. Next time, consider credible and unbiased writing instead of something superficially clever.

clueless article. you're not supposed to juice the buds, dude, you're supposed to juice the fresh leaves. which are generally otherwise discarded. And btw Dr. William Courtney isn't from Willits, either, although he has an office in Willits, he's from the coast.

"You'll start showing up to things on-time, you'll stop eating Cheetos, and a new job will magically come into view."

I'm hardly ever late, and always make early. I eat healthier than most people, I am a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu athlete, and I work 50 hours a week. I smoke and vaporize marijuana 3-4 times a week. So your opinion is full of shit, sir.

Extremely biased view, great journalist to hire LA Weekly, well done. (you guys might want to look up 'journalism ethics')

"It's true. You don't get stoned. Only broke."

So you're saying that emptying your pockets on perscription drugs that are made in a factory and never guaranteed to work, as opposed to spending your money on a plant that grows from the ground, with confirmed healing qualities is better?

"He has presented anecdotal evidence of the miracle of raw cannabis"

If you did your job and researched, just a small amount of information, which is pretty obvious you didn't, you would know about the numerous proven scientific studies of the healing qualities of cannabinoids.

I also noticed that you chose to dupe people into thinking this is WAY too expensive for them to even test as alternative medicine.

Look at this FACT, "In 2006, per-capita spending for health care in the U.S., US$6,714."(this rose in 2007) Now I would assume that the majority, if any, of this $6714 is not made up from the purchasing of pot. $6000+ to spend on pharmacuticals? Seems excessive, Why would you spend so much on a drug from a factory that may not even benefit you or help you in any way?

Pharmacuticals are NEVER guaranteed to work, so why not DO YOUR FUCKING JOB and write this article as an alternative to pharmacuticals instead of giving everybody your biased, unresearched views. Although from reading some of your other articles it's pretty obvious you won't do this. Love that racism in your Mitt Romney article btw.

"The use of prescription drugs is increasing among adults who have drug coverage." FACT

P.S. LA Weekly, fire this guy, he's hopeless.

next time have someone who is not biased against cannabis write the article ,or at least a journalist who has some common sense to write about the facts and not his own personal opinion...honestly how does this writer even have employment >>> ???

Dennis: the *leaves from the raw plant* are juiced, not the dried and manicured buds - so it wouldn't cost $300/oz

Pretty sure if you ate/drank a load of weed you would be mashed off your tits. You certainly would be if it was hash.

Morph

Slow down Dennis.  Smoking destroys a lot of THC and CBD, but that's not the point of the video.  According to one study almost 75% of THC is destroyed when cannabis is smoked in a joint.  But the 25 or so percent that survives and is inhaled by the user is what is responsible for cannabis' psychoactivity.  The point that Dr. Courtney makes in the video is that THC exists in the raw plant in its non-psychoactive acidic form: THCA.  Heating THCA decarboxylates it into THC and it becomes psychoactive. Raw cannabis may provide the medicinal benefits without the psychoactivity, though that's yet to be proven and the current evidence is merely anecdotal.  Too bad cannabis research is so restricted in the US, because it would be pretty simple to test Courtney's claims.
