The LAPD is trying to track down the shooter who killed a man and wounded three others outside the Mayan club downtown over the weekend.

Cops seem to be frustrated: They say the surviving victims aren't talking. That's to be expected though: The beef that sparked the attack was reported to involve gang rivals from the huge and hateful 18th Street and Mara Salvatrucha organizations.

It all happened ...

... about 2:45 a.m. Saturday at Hill Street and Olympic Boulevard, according to the LAPD.

According to an LAPD statement:

Witnesses reported hearing both sides calling out gang names. One man retrieved a gun from a parked car in a nearby parking lot and started shooting the apparent rivals.

A man who was shot in the head later died at a hospital, according to police. Another was shot in the leg and hospitalized. Two others showed up at hospitals later and received treatment for minor gunshot wounds, the LAPD states:

All the victims were uncooperative with police.

They're hoping security video and witnesses' cellphone shots might help detectives find the killer.

Cops are calling it an "after-hours shooting outside the Mayan nightclub," which makes it sound like the victims, at least, were around for the nightlife.

The Mayan lists its Friday night party as "Soundmachine" on its website; it's said to be open until 2:30 a.m.

LAPD Lt. Paul Vernon seemed frustrated when he said:

There were dozens of people around when this happened and we're sure someone knows who the shooter is. But, typically, few people come forward when gangs are involved, but stepping up is the best way to reduce gang activity.

The shooter was described as 5 feet, 7 inches tall, 180 pounds and wearing a black shirt and blue jeans. His weapon was a semiautomatic handgun, cops said.
