Albert Abrams, City Hall's Ex-Neighborhood Councils Chief, Indicted, Arrested for Child Porn
Albert Abrams, the former chief of the L.A. Department of Neighborhood Empowerment, was arrested this morning by federal agents after he was indicted yesterday as part of a child-porn case, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The former president of the City of Los Angeles' Board of Neighborhood Commissioners had said that his "split personality" caused him to view child porn.
A statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office in L.A. says the Tarzana resident "surrendered" to agents this morning.
The federal indictment, according to the statement, includes:
... five counts of distributing child pornography. According to an affidavit in support of a search warrant executed at Abrams' residence last summer, authorities looking into a peer-to-peer file-sharing network were able to download more than 150 videos and images depicting child pornography from a computer that was located at Abrams' house.
The indictment further charges Abrams with two counts of receipt of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography.
Last summer federal agents raided his home and seized computer gear.
Abrams told told CBS Los Angeles' David Goldstein that recent back surgery caused him to view or download child porn from a site called BoyWonderUSA. "I was watching myself from a distance watching it," Abrams said.
He quit as head of the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners, and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa accepted his resignation.
At the time David Bell of the East Hollywood Neighborhood Council told us:
I don't really know that having a growth on your back has to do with kiddie porn. But to me I think this sounds like a personal aberration. I don't think it has a bearing on leadership of Neighborhood Empowerment or City Hall.
