1-Year-Old Baby Girl Dead, 5-Year-Old Sister Critical After Mom Allegedly Caught Trying to Drown Them in Bathtub in South L.A.

A 1-year-old girl died and her 5-year-old sister was in critical-but-stable condition after their mother allegedly tried to drown them in a bathtub, according to police and reports.

The LAPD stated this afternoon: "LAFD tried to resuscitate both as best as they could and transported to a local hospital. 1 yr old passed away."

... in the 900 block of W. 50th St. in South L.A. about shortly before 7:30 a.m., police said.
LAPD spokesman Cmdr. Andrew Smith told City News Service:
The girls' father was home, and he heard noises from the bathroom, and when he went in, it appeared that the mother was trying to drown the children.
The woman was detained for questioning.
[Corrected at 4:18 p.m.]: The Los Angeles Times says the tub was a baby tub for washing infants. The headline was changed.
