Remington Orr, Sheriff's Custody Assistant, Arrested After Allegedly Trying to Smuggle, Sell Cocaine Behind Bars
Update on Wednesday: He pleaded not guilty.
As if embattled Sheriff Lee Baca needed another headline about an employee gone-bad, department officials today said they arrested one of their own trying to enter the Men's Central Jail with cocaine.
Remington Orr was arrested at 7:30 last night -- get this -- "as he was preparing to enter Men's Central Jail to distribute cocaine."
So goes the allegation in a statement just released by sheriff's officials:
Props to them for getting this out in the open fairly quickly.
Following nearly a decades' worth of allegations of unnecessary inmate beatings inside the jail Baca only late last year acknowledged there might be a problem.
Sheriff's officials say Orr is a "Custody Assistant" whose been employed at the department for four years. According the statement:
Monday's arrest culminated a four week Sheriff's Department investigation into allegations that Orr was bringing contraband to jail inmates in exchange for monetary considerations. He was subsequently arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance with the Intent to Sell, Transportation of a Controlled Substance with the Intent to Sell, and Bribery.
Whew.
He was jailed in lieu of $1 million bail. They didn't have to go far to put him behind bars, either.
Orr is listed as a 23-year-old on the sheriff's inmate information database.
Just last month a deputy was arrested because he allegedly tried to smuggle a burrito filled with heroin inside the jail.
