Long Beach Federal Building Shooting: One Dead After ICE Officer Reportedly Opens Fire at Work

Two people, including a law enforcement officer, were shot on the seventh floor of the Glenn M. Anderson Federal Building in Long Beach tonight, according to reports.

Live television coverage from CBS Los Angeles indicated that the attack happened shortly before 6 p.m. inside the building, which is at 501 W. Ocean Boulevard.

More than one outlet reported that one of the victims was believed to be ...

... an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer who was shot in the abdomen and taken to a nearby hospital.

It's not clear what became of the second possible victim, but CBS said it was possible there was a DOA, or dead-on-arrival, victim. The station added it was possibly a case of a self-inflicted wound.

[Update at 6:44 p.m.]: Various outlets are reporting that an ICE officer allegedly shot two others, killing one and wounding the other.

[Update at 8:31 p.m.]: The Los Angeles Times reports that an ICE agent might have opened fire on a supervisor, prompting a shootout as another agent or agents tried to subdue the suspect.

Two people are dead including, apparently, the alleged shooter: The Times says investigators are looking at the possibility the alleged shooter killed him/herself. Another agent was hospitalized.

ICE released this statement tonight:

At approximately 5:30 (Pacific) this afternoon, two agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) were shot inside the agency's offices at the federal building in Long Beach. One of the agents died at the scene. The second agent was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in stable condition. The names of the agents are not being released pending notification of the next of kin. The shooting is being investigated by ICE's Office of Professional Responsibility, the Long Beach Police Department and the FBI.

[Update at 11:07 p.m.]: Officials now say only one person has died, the alleged shooter.

Here's part of what FBI Assistant Director in Charge Steven M. Martinez told reporters tonight after one "agent" opened fire on a colleague:

Another agent working nearby intervened and fired his weapon. This resulted in the death of the shooter.

Martinez said the shootings happened "in their office space" and that it was an "isolated" incident of "workplace violence" in which the original shooter was "acting alone."

The first agent who was shot was said to have been stabilized at a hospital. The second shooter was apparently uninjured.

[Update at 2:03 p.m. Friday]: ICE officials today named the suspected shooter as supervising special agent Ezequiel Garcia, 45. They said he shot his boss, 51-year-old Kevin Kozak, before he was gunned down by another agent.

Kozak was ID'd as ICE's special agent in charge for the L.A. region. According to the Long Beach Press-Telegram:

Officials said the Kozak, a head supervisor above Garcia, was talking to the gunman about his work performance before the shooting, officials said.
