Los Angeles Corruption is Second Only to That of Chicago

L.A. Noire.
Sure we use a bit of hyperbole over here at LA Weekly. But we weren't kidding when we told you there's some corruption in this town.

Building inspectors have been accused of bribery (at least one was convicted). We have a mayor who took lots of valuable, free tickets to high-end events like the Oscars without reporting them as gifts. And now the county assessor is being investigated for giving favorable property value estimations to contributors.

Now, we're not saying we don't like a juicy story when we see it. But word, apparently, has gotten around that L.A. is a dirty girl (and we wanted her all to ourselves):

A recent University of Illinois study titled Chicago and Illinois: Leading the Pack in Corruption places L.A. in a solid second place as far as urban corruption in the United States goes. A summary states:

... The number of public-corruption convictions in the Northern District of Illinois (Chicago) leads all other districts with 1,531 convictions since 1976. The two closest contenders were the Central District of California (Los Angeles) with 1,275 convictions, and the Southern District of New York (Manhattan) with 1,202 convictions.

In your face, New York.

Over the weekend, Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez wrote that we should be the true champions:

We cannot accept this, folks. With just a little more effort, I think we can knock Chicago off the top of the leader board.

But if you look at the study's breakdown of numbers from 2000 to 2009 we actually beat Chicago and New York with 383 federal public corruption convictions during that more recent time frame.

Yes we can!

Read the whole study here.

The Current elected officials are not qualified to be the next Mayor of Los Angeles! Rev1 We must eliminate corruption in Los Angeles. A good argument against current administration officials running for mayor is that Wendy Greuel who has been in the city council since 2012 and is "all of a sudden" finding problems as controller and as a now mayoral candidate that she didn't seem to notice as a council member for over 9 years. That Eric Garcetti has been "at the helm of city council for over a decade of decline and deterioration." That Jan Perry is much like the others she has been in office since 2001. That Austin Beutner can't possibly escape blame after having run 13 city departments, with the position of First Deputy Mayor and Chief Executive for Economic and Business Policy, as well as General Manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power 1994-1996. (Austin Beutner has withdrawn from the race). None of them have objected or put up an argument while in office against the policies that have brought Los Angeles to the verge of bankruptcy and total economic disaster, the worst in 8 decades.  And that LA’s outgoing Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa makes a strong argument for letting a complete outsider give it a go. An outsider has no allegiance to the political machine.  Los Angeles must start with a clean slate at City Hall. From the current list of candidates, I can see only two outsiders that are qualified; YJ Draiman & Kevin James. We have an opportunity to elect and put in Los Angeles City Hall a new Mayor and 8 out of the 15 Councilmen that are up for election. This could change the face of the administration drastically and bring about a change of operation, where sound decisions and transparency will be the new mandate for LA City Hall. The mayor of the city of Los Angeles must be a leader like no other leader, he must be an exceptional administrator and trustworthy. He must have top notch advisers to advice him in bringing LA to economic health. A city of Los Angeles with about 4 million people and spans an area of 465 square miles that has an economic engine that by far surpasses many countries; it is an enormous responsibility and must be managed properly.  If LA keeps taxing its people to death there will be nobody left in the city to collect taxes from. Many people and businesses are leaving the city in droves.

No way! DC beats Chicago by a mile! No, by 30 trillion miles ... and growing. And Noo Yawk can compete for LA corruption any day of the week. We've got insider-trading puppy Bloomberg, who will not tolerate any slaves to be armed. Course, Chicago has the son of a middle eastern terrorist as mayor and a got-off-scot-free domestic terrorist as professor (who purportedly ghost writes books for 4teleprompter-reading puppets). Still, nobody can top DC for corruption of all varieties. Its beyond the imagination of even a Dante.

LA has some corruption...Even the FBI is dirty and that tells you the pulse of the city. Miami and Las Vegas share the same combination of private and public corruption. The problem in LA?This almost nerdy Hollywood theme world - of posers and wanabees.

L.A. is corrupt top to bottom.  This article does not include the abuse of city resources of lower level employeees, using city cars day & night, including handing them over to family & friends to use at all hours, employees drinking on the job, even in their vehicles, attending strip shows on city time, on & on ad infinitum.  And what about the city's "VIP yacht" that is being renovated to the tune of half a million dollars, or so.   I appreciate this little article, however it would take a major expose of L.A. city corruption to get people to pay attention to the scandalous waste of their money by self serving egomaniacs & opportunists of all stripes & persuasions. Villaraigosa is a major player in the personal publicity game - pity he chose politics instead of show business. He would have been the perfect reality show star

Villagrosa is the main culprit for the decline in our morality. Hispanics will bring down America.

That's because we Chicagoans have elevated corruption to an art form. Only the true morons go to jail anymore. The rest of us know how the game is played, and how to work the system.

Baca, Trutanich and Villagrosa should be tried for corruption. Really.
