Marijuana's Top 5 Uses, From Real University Research

Marijuana: It does a body good.
Here in California, marijuana is legal for just about any ailment you can dream up.

And while medical cannabis supporters have argued that the drug is a harmless tool for grandmothers with cancer who want to forget their pain and spark their appetites, there has been plenty of academic research on all the wonderful things weed can do too.

Yeah, we know most of you just make stuff up when you go to the doctor to get your recommendations in this pot shop capital of America, but behold, the bold claims of science when it comes to prime, grade-A bud:

5. Our top 5 marijuana-triggered cures starts with post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD). The pro-pot folks at the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies think that cannabis "can help reduce PTSD symptoms in fifty veterans with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)," according to a summary of a study approved by the FDA.

What we think: Giving weed of the uber-strong varieties (Michael Phelps, O.G. Kush, Blue Ivy) found in L.A. pot shops will only give veterans flashbacks and unpleasant visions. Really.

This article was so badly written and insanely biased. As someone using marijuana medicinally for depression because antidepressants make me nauseated, dizzy, tired and vomiting, it was ridiculously offensive to read. These aren't crackpot theories, real research does back up all five things you seem to be mocking here.

Now, if they could just find a way to deal with all the damage THC does to the neuron dendrites, we would be able to use it with complete confidence!

Personally it helps me with nausea, insomnia, stress, backpain, anxiety.  To think of all the drugs i'd have to take, and all the side effects I'd have to endure...

people have to sleep ,marijuana makes sleep ,i have new invention for marijuana which could justify its medical use not known to world before which could save millions of people from suffering death .is there any pharma company or research scientist to follow  who could come up .aftera all alcholics and other drug users are tempted to be criminals not with marijuana where it is hypnotic and sedative. it will be advisable to take the best side for medical use and not other side effects as is the case with any other drug used by us continously . in india people have a godly bend and use is to divinity by many sadhus who leave their sloidarity feeling .

The point about helping with cocaine habits is definitely true.  Actually, pot can help with A LOT of narcotics dependencies.  It's already been shown to help people get over alcoholism and heroin addiction.  People need to understand that drugs have good and bad effects, and that we should use them to our advantage - not just vilify certain substances and lock people in prison for using them.

For some reason, Mr. Romero chose to exclude the most important laboratory finding of all about cannabinoids, the active ingredients in medical cannabis -- that they shrink and prevent cancerous tumors. There has been far more peer-reviewed research on this aspect of cannabinoids than on any of the "top 5" cited by Mr. Romero, which certainly makes one wonder about his agenda, since pot curing cancer is a much bigger news story than anything else Mr. Romero has ever covered in his career, or is likely to.

Kalifornia - a the state full of dope-smokers that want to outlaw those evil cigarettes and woodstoves but then easily justify marijuana.  You are nothing but a pile of hypocrites.  Marijuana has been a known carcinogen for decades but you all choose to ignore the science.  There is absolutely no way that you drive as good or better while stoned.  Marijuana is nothing more than a mind-numbing or mind-dumbing substance.  Marijuana causes just as many problems or more than alcohol.  Marijuana advocates always want to paint this pretty picture of marijuana use or abuse, but in reality it is just another chemical lobotomy.

@NOYB LOL. I love when people tout science when they say something that couldn't be further from the truth. You certainly fell for 1940s propaganda nicely.

We can talk about smoking pot all day but as long as the government keeps it illegal to use we will still get fined if we get caught with it. So until the people of the U.S. finally gets tired of the government taking our freedom away and we start a civil war with the government all we can do is sit back with "KY" while they keep screwing us in the a@#. So do u still feel free? I know I don't. How can anybody say we are free if I can't smoke a jay without some cop busting us for it.

Nicely said Shawn Adams.  After reading this article I was afraid that my brain cells would never recover.  My marijuana will help, though.

Kind of douche article buddy, nice job of cherry picking the University info though...  Oh and the choice of stock photos was an especially nice touch.  I had to laugh that the sole piece of University research was held til last and almost like a side comment; up until that point I was scratching my head about what legitimate University data was even researched and from where.  What/where/who were your sources?

Seriously though, I mean talk about what appears to be a really biased piece, attempting to shoot out the credibility of Marijuana and Marijuana users.  If marijuana makes people happy, let them do it.  It is a choice and the federal and state govts can't make every single choice related to personal responsibility nor should it.  Cigarettes, Alcohol, Marijuana, these are all personal choices and shouldn't be govt decisions.

In closing...

Cokeheads and Marijuana?  I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you are a moron (not mormon so we are clear) for even mentioning both in the same article; they are nowhere near the same thing, cocaine is incredibly addictive and can cause heart attack, stroke, and death.    Saying that people are successfully using Marijuana to get off Cocaine is like saying that someone was using cigarettes to help them kick Heroin, it is just ridiculous and sounds like bullsh*t.  In addition your PTSD commentary was for a lack of a better way to put it, also just as useless as the cocaine thing (really?!  cocaine?!) and insensitive in nature.  I know you aren't a doctor and that you are just some hack writing for the internet portion of a newspaper, but why write this article in such a way, unless your point was to demean the efficacy/legitimacy of Medicinal Marijuana or to cast aspersions about those that use Marijuana?

What exactly was your motivation for writing this, something like: "Marijuana is hot topic right now, I think that I will try to be clever and put together some slap and smile bash piece to make the rag/my boss/whomever proud"?

More to the point...

Where do you stand personally in regards to legalized or medical marijuana Dennis?

I don't live in California, I like my Guns too much.  Unfortunately, Marijuana and my personal chemistry do not agree, I did it once in College as an undergrad, and I just had a bad reaction to it, anyway, now I'm still in college working on finishing med. school. I don't think I've seen a single objective article on this website. No, I'm not an M.D., yet. So this is not an expert opinion, or a opinion from a doctor. Just from a regular guy....Yeah, some Dr.'s say that for everything marijuana is good for, there is a pill that does it better. IMO, that should be for the person/patient to decide. Benzodiazipenes such as Xanax and Valium may relieve stress but are HIGHLY addictive. Depending on the dose and how long you've been taking them it is extremely dangerous to stop them "cold turkey" this can result in seizures and worse. BTW, how many prescription drug recalls have you seen recently? Prescription drugs that are killing people? While I am not saying that people should smoke pot solely for the sake of getting high, but I am saying if I had PTSD and lived in Cali. and it helped me with the stress, I would definitely purchase it legally.  The whole "90percent of people who do hard drugs smoked marijuana" That's like saying, 90% of alcoholics had an alcoholic drink before the age of 21" back to marijuana. Seriously, who is going to have a moral dilemma about marijuana, but not have one about crack?

Is Dennis Romero a Mormon or something? It's one thing to dismiss some stoner's claim, but this is real university research that he is mocking. And why are you writing this article for idiots when one of the studies cited suggests that some of the most intelligent members of the populace use marijuana? If you want to gauge the intelligence of the opposition view, just check out Chuggle's comment.

Dennis...you were a little over the top on the sarcasm.Do you know that the main reason the NIH will not do comprehensive medical research onMJ - is based on "fear" of the medical benefit/results? It would paint the US Gov into a corner on the issue and that's why they simply avoid it. There's plenty of reputable European research that backs-up these claims....especially PTSD.

nixon gave money for research and decided not to use the results which proved that it was v3ery beneficial for cancer patients! The pharmaceutical companies would lose out big time if people could grow th remedy in their back yards

people who smoke weed are such outstanding smart individuals(*well except for the cokeheads, right?) every person I ever bought weed from had "other" drugs for sale as well, and were total complete retards when comes to life(*broken families, addiction, live in poverity/ghetto)

Your comment doesn't make much sense, I don't live in cali, but, your talking about purchasing marijuana illegally. Your first comment "people who smoke weed are such outstanding smart individuals" that sounds like you were trying to be sarcastic, but, you yourself smoke weed. Maybe I misunderstood and your buying it and then throwing it away. Marijuana is not legal at all in my state, but, as an undergrad in college I tried it, and just didn't enjoy it(everyones chemistry is different).I'm now attending med. school, but have not yet finished.  I knew alot of people who smoked in College as an undergrad, much more than now, as at the time I lived in the dorms.  MOST illegal drug dealers(you know the ones who live in would sell you pepsi if it were illegal and they could make money off it. However, alot of people who buy from people like the ones YOU buy from, also usually sell a little on the side.

BTW, IMO, Marijuana should be completely legalized, and I know at least a dozen medical Dr.'s(most Ivy League grads) who agree with me. I believe if smoking marijuana increases the quality of your life without harming others, I don't know why it shouldn't be legal.BTW, it's Poverty, not Poverity, and this is coming from someone who absolutely stinks when it comes to grammar, Math is my language.

You're talking about drug dealers who are a whole different breed of people, they're not that way from smoking pot, that's the worst kind of generalization you can make. Why are you even buying weed illegally? get a fucking prescription you wasteoid.
