Academy Award Winners Haven't Included Latino Actors, Nonwhite Actresses in 10 Years

Updated at the bottom: The Oscars broke the 10-year spell.

Only days after the voters behind the Academy Awards were revealed as extremely white (94 percent), male (77 percent) and old (median age, 62), the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center issued a report indicating that Oscar winners seem to reflect the body.

The brief, "Not Quite a Breakthrough: The Oscars And Actors of Color, 2002-2012," deflates any notion that 2002's big year for African Americans at the Academy Awards opened the doors of Hollywood to further gains by minorities:

If anything, 2002, when Halle Berry and Denzel Washington won the top acting awards and Sidney Poitier was honored for lifetime achievement, was a symbolic high point that Hollywood hasn't seen before or since.

According to the paper, written by Russell K. Robinson, Su Li, Angela Makabali, and Kaitlyn Murphy of the Chief Justice Earl Warren Institute on Law and Social Policy at the UC Berkeley School of Law:

-All Best Actress winners since 2002 have been white.

-No winner in any acting category during the last ten years has been Latino, Asian American, or Native American.

-Oscar winners and nominees of color make fewer movies per year after their nominations than their white peers do.

-Oscar winners and nominees of color are more likely than their white peers to work in television, which is considered lower-status work.

-Oscar winners and nominees of color are less likely than their white peers to receive subsequent nominations.

Things are getting better, though:

From 1990 through 2000, about 9 percent of the Oscar nominees in the top categories were people of color (Munoz 2002). Our analysis shows that from 2002 through 2012, almost 20 percent of nominees were people of color, which is a notable increase.

But the researchers note that minority nominees are much less likely to be nominated again and are much more likely to end up working in television (72 percent of minority nominees end up in TV versus 36 percent of white ones).

Chief among the authors' recommendations:

-Diversify the Academy. Along with its overwhelmingly white, geezerly voting population, the paper notes that just one of the Academy's 43 board of governors members is not white. The researchers want the Academy to start a diversity task force.

-Develop young talent of color. The paper states:

Each year Hollywood executives select unknown white male actors (such as Armie Hammer, Chris Hemsworth, and Andrew Garfield) and cast them in big-budget action films and prestige projects, grooming them to become the next Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise. Actors of color are routinely shut out of these game-changing roles.

-Diversify the ranks of Hollywood executives: The authors contend that there isn't one minority who's able to green-light major-studio projects.

Not even Tyler Perry.

[Read the full brief here; check out additional research from USC at the bottom]:

CSRC Latino Policy and Issues Brief_March2012

[Added at 11:50 p.m. Sunday]: Another recent study (Asymmetrical Academy Awards 2), this one by researchers at USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, including lead author and associate professor Stacy L. Smith, looked at the Oscars from 2007 to 2010 and unearthed some similarly startling facts:

-Looking at 30 Best Picture nominees, women made up only 32.6 of the films' characters, which had a ratio of 2.1 men to every woman on-screen.

-78 percent of the speaking characters were white. Latinos, who comprise one of every two people in Los Angeles, made up 1.9 percent of the speaking roles.

-Women made up less than one in four producers (23.9 percent), 14.3 percent of directors and 12.3 percent of writers on nominated films.

[Update at 9 p.m.]: The Awards broke the 10-year dry spell for minorities in major categories tonight when Octavia Spencer won best supporting actress for her role as an outspoken maid in The Help.

The UCLA study notes that ...

... the industry channels women of color into supporting roles ... The Best Supporting Actress category is the most diverse, with women of color constituting 32 percent of the nominees. Most of these nominees, however, have been black women playing roles that embodied some combination of longstanding stereotypes: women who are sassy, full-figured, maternal, or non-sexual.

"Oscar racism", more doublespeak from the progtards.

In 2006 Forest Whitaker won Best Actor for The Last King of Scotland, Javier Bardem won Best Supporting Actor for No Country For Old Men, and Jennifer Hudson won Best Supporting Actress for Dreamgirls.  So that dry spell was considerably shorter than 10 years.  BTW, working in television is no longer thought of as low status.

The comment by woodymcbreairty and Prado totally ignore the heavy role production and distribution companies have on movie-making.  After you understand it you might feel a bit differently.

The road to an Academy Award (or most others) is a very long, hard climb.  It is not a question of affirmative action, but talent, perserverance, very thick skin, a high tolerance for rejection, and a demonstration of skills in many ways.  Some who seek the status of "star" do so, most do not, regardless of their color or ethnicity.  There are many variables that figure into the equasion. I don't think anyone has the right to demand an "award" of any kind from anyone, nor to be in a movie because of their color or country of origin.  People who  take the time, trouble, expense & endless headaches to get a movie made deserve to do it in whatever way they think will produce the most success.  I think it would be great to see more people who feel slighted in the movie industry  form production companies,  develop projects, write scripts that require the services & talents of their choice & help level out things, maybe open acting schools, talent agencies, online sites, for their promotion.  Noone is owed a movie part & noone is obligated to write scripts other than what their hearts direct, & above all noone is "entitled" to an Academy Award. People of all colors, stripes & persuasions are rejected by the movie industry by the 100s of 1000s on an ongoing basis.  Only the strong survive.

It's clear the Academy needs more diversity and I'll never get over some of the snubbing of major black performances and works of art, from Color Purple, to Amistad to the soundtrack of Waiting to Exhale, to X, I could go on.

But factually this update by the writer of the article is incorrect.  The study says no non-white actresses in the major category (Best Actress) have been awarded since Berry.  Since Halle's win (and don't get me started about how many performances Angela Bassett had given before that time that were Oscar worthy, but I digress), Jennifer Hudson and Monique had both won Best Supporting Actress trophies for Dreamgirls and Precious, respectively.  Also, the study conveniently ignores the male categories in which Jaime Foxx and Forrest Whitaker won the Best Actor nod for Ray and Last King of Scotland, and Morgan Freeman in Million Dollar Baby for Best Supporting Actor.

I think the lack of quality stories written for black actresses has a lot to do with the drought.  And that has more to do with the bias or racism or both in the industry, which is a much more far reaching and has a greater impact than one awards show.

Stop it ! Whatever color race you are , just create and put it out on the internet.  Those with the money invest in what they want and hire the people they want. They have the right because its their money. Not yours their investing. If they lose money, its their money being lost not yours.

So go create and invest in your own projects. Stop waiting for the powers that control Hollywood to notice you or give you a break.  If your content is good enough, people will talk about it, and maybe the powers may buy your film. Go to work!

How many Anglos were nominated for a Latin Grammy?  Oh that's different though, they get their own awards show and can exclude chinitos, negritos and gabachos.  Que orgullo?

Noticed some flaws in their stats. Penelope Cruz won for best supporting in 2009. But I guess technically she is not Latino but Spanish. And Mo'nique won in 2010. Plus I stopped at 2009. So not as bad as the title would lead you to believe.

The best part of this is that liberal Hollywood is the most racist of all. I've been to many social gatherings in Studio City where entertainment industry types talk about "the Blacks" and "the Mexicans."

What would you prefer they call them - "the jigaboos" and "the border hoppers"? Grow up!

Pointing fingers as usual when we only have ourselves to blame.  We are the ones who purchase movie tickets, buy DVD's and download movies.  If people were really that offended and upset, they would stop going to the movies, but they don't.  They movie producers cast who they think will make money for them, but of course, we always blame someone else.  Personal responsibilty has gone out the window these days.

Money is a poor excuse for racism. Try a better spin.

What planet are you living on?  All these producers and CEO's of companys care about is money.  They don't care what color the person is they screw over, as long as they get their millions.  It's people like you that keep racism alive.  The race card gets old fast.  I'm gay and never use that as an excuse for how my life has turned out.  Typical entitlement attitude.

And being a "person of color" is a poor excuse for not being inventive, industrious and indomitable. Just ask the Jews who created Hollywood in the garden of the WASPs.

@Yvonne: I call bullshit on your claim that "Everyday is White History Day" because the REALITY is that no day could ever be white history day. Get over yourself. Are you claiming that your ancestors are weak and should have done more to get recognition for your race?

oaklandeasy

Every day is White History Day in every school in the US. Your people are so guilty of crimes against humanity, you've erased it from your mind. Wake up.

"Your people?" So you think you know who my people are? Dumbass! You can keep all of your "crimes against humanity," shit head, because my people came into this country in 1908 and never owned any slaves, so you might want to check yourself there buddy...

And YOU, Oaklandeasy, are still enslaved whether you are now in chains or not.

Wouldn't want to be ya....

"Your people?" Why don't you stop blaming others for your shortcomings and take some responsibility. Ya, look into it.

what is the black man's biggest enemy...the answer is simple...another black man. black men kill each other at such an alarming rate they don't even have time to worry about the white man's crimes against humanity. oaklandeasy is just a fuckin bigot (notice his use of the "your people" motto). it's time for you to wake up and actually read a history book.

So you want affirmative action for awards now too? What a fucking joke. Maybe it has nothing to do with race and more has to do with who sells well.

A.Lizard

Perhaps you'll get why racism and entertainment is a bad combination when you find a generation from now that Hollywood has turned into simply a bunch of brand names owned by Bollywood and if you don't speak an Indian language or Chinese, you don't get hired or invested in.

oaklandeasy
oaklandeasy

Or maybe you're stupid. The voters, producers and studios are all controlled by old, white men. AKA Male, Pale and Stale. They want movies about their own people unless the people of color are playing roles which put down their race or fit into a nice little pigeon hole that White America is comfortable. If you came out of your racist, little hole once in a while, maybe you'd be a little bit more amenable to the feelings of others. It's been my experience and you've reinforced it here that most racists are ignorant. There have also been studies done. People like you should not be allowed to post on the internet.

Spaniards = Latinos. They're the original Latinos actually.

OaklandEasy

Actually, while Spaniards ARE Latin, they're not original Latinos. Latin comes from Italy, not Spain. But either way, you're wrong because in the context, Latino is short for Latino Americano which is a mixture of Spanish and Indigenous people. So no, Javier and Penelope are not Latinos. They are Spaniards. Call them Latinos to their face and they'll slap you and then offer you some Rioja.

So what if Oscar is white? Didn't whites create and nurture Hollywood in the first place? Every year we have Black History Month and Latino History Month. For just ONE night white people get to celebrate themselves and their achievements. Let them!

That is quite possibly the most ignorant statement I've heard today. And what about the Women who are under represented according to the article? What do they get? What's messed up about you is that you're obviously a person of color from your name, yet you stick up for your master, instead of your people. Shame on you.

Yvonne Taylor

There is nothing wrong with being white and talented, in fact it is a great thing to be any race and talented. However, what I have a problem with is that they claim to be fair when they are not. I'm sure if you went and asked the producers if they turned away actors of color, they would lie. An industry that is exclusive and in a way racist, should not claim that it is not. At least let those of color know, so that when they don't get their deserved recognition, they are not surprised. Also, just the fact that the fact that there has to be a Black History Month and Latino History Month is offensive. It shows that their accomplishments are not highlighted as part of the regular curriculum, therefor they have to take a month and squeeze them in there, as not to upset those of color. Everyday, is "White History Day", not just the oscar night, maybe white need to take a break from celebrating themselves once in a while. Also, you can't say they get awarded strictly for their talent when others of color are not even truly given the chance.

herrE2001

White people everywhere be sure and apologize every chance you get for all your talent and hard work.Only in today's society will you be criticized for possessing these things, shame on you.
