Just another example of animal rights nuts insisting that their viewpoint ought to be the law for everyone else.  Walt Disney never met Mother Nature, and neither do so-called animal rights activists know what they are talking about.  "Rare-ish"?!?  Experts have been telling the people of Calif. that there are more mountain lions in the state than the available habitat can support.  That's why lions are snatching pets out of yards, attacking joggers, bikers, and kids year after year.  But when a lion hunt is put to a public vote, the Disney crowd votes it down...so the problem lions are killed by animal control agents instead.  What stupidity.

Richards legally hunted on a ranch accessing over 750,000 acres of national forest. No fences not a "canned hunt."  If the hunt was presented to him as a gift, he has no influence with his position on California's Commission for Idaho.  Seriously who would want Calfornia's game laws applied to Idaho?  I previously hunted in Calfornia but not  anymore.  Tired of seeing very few small deer.  I thank the lion, man's enchroachment, and the fact the state sells thousands of deer tags only to gain the revenue rather than actually manage the game to healthy population standards.  California is more concerned with the revenue from deer tag sales than the numbers of deer sustained in areas.

What does Richard's being a Republican have to do with his choice to hunt? Absolutely nothing. 

I trophy hunted for elk in Nevada a few years ago.  I had  several opportunities many times over  to  fill my freezer but I wanted a large antlered bull elk and set a standard for myself.  The result was I came home empty handed but had a great hunt with many challenges.  Those of you who do not hunt or who hunt and have never put yourself into a higher standard of  trophy hunting  which restricts opportunity even more so, will not comprehend my explanation.

Yet the beloved Lt. governor who is spearheading this attack was nailing his buddy's wife and none of you say a thing about his views, morals ethics.  Yet he wants Richards off the Commission.  People who live in glass houses should not thrw stones.

Hunting for trophy is wasteful. I am a gun owner and hunter. You hunt to supply yourself and family with food, not to decorate your house. Hunting for trophy is for cowards and individuals who have not respect for mother earth! If you want to hunt for trophy, hunt with your bare hands, not with a rifle from 100 yards away! If you win, then that would support bragging rights. Humans are just so wasteful and have not respect for other life! ....and I don't care if it is legal or not....it is wasteful. How would you like it if I hunted your family dog for trophy?

The only problem is if he purchased an out of state hunting license he did nothing illegal in that regard.  If he took a gift for his stay and is an appointed official that may not be kosher.  Go after him for that but not for doing something that isn't illegal in Idaho.  Also we aren't all blood-red hicks in Idaho and I find that slightly offensive.  I happen to live in probably the only Democratic County but nonetheless am a Democrat.

For all of you that think Mountain Lions are so, extra special. I invite you to bring a few of your young children up to the local mountains near San Diego, Los Angeles or Orange County and have them play a nice game of say, "hide and seek". You won't do it; and if you would you are a fool. The Southern California mountain ranges are loaded with big, hungry mountain lions that would take and eat a kid in a split second. There is less chance of that happening in states that hunt mountain lions. Partly, because there are less of them and partly because mountain lions are not stupid. In states like Idaho, they associate the sound of humans and dogs with danger. In California those sounds are just a dinner bell to them.

If killing a cougar is wrong, is it all right to kill a deer? How about a chicken or a catfish or a jumbo prawn? Is it wrong to kill a mosquito or a roach? If you can draw the line between acceptable and unacceptable, you must be God. I had 14 sheep killed on my property before I was issued a depredation permit. I found no satisfaction in killing the animal, but I have dogs as well as neighbors with children, and I was running out of sheep.

I did not realize there were that many ignorant people out there. It is well documented that the mountain men prefered cougar over most game meats. As far as a "canned" hunt it was not. He did nothing illegal. Way are so many Cali's worried about someone else and just take care of their own life!

He did nothing wrong and calling for his removal from the fish and game commission because he hunts is irresponsible. That is checks and balances our country needs not to mention hunters are the ORIGINAL conservationists. No one cares more about the land and animals than hunters. Our license fees and taxes pay to preserve land keep animal populations in check for generations of hunters and non-hunters to come. The level of hate from some people is disturbing and criminal.

You know, I am not arguing the legality of the act, but what bothers me most is that this person, who is supposed to represent the best the interest of our natural resources, took pleasure (i.e., the big smile in his face) in the killing of a species he should be beholden to protect.  Yes he needs to resign.

Whenever I see a photograph of some sportsman grinning over his kill, I am always impressed by the striking moral and esthetic superiority of the dead animal to the live one.

I would vote yes for gay marriage as long as gays would vote "yes" to kill mountains lions.  We should have never sent the killing of mountains to a state vote! Fish and game should make the call to kill or protect the large cats, not the liberals of California. Furthermore, what are the benefits of having 15000, 20000 or more large cats roaming the California Mountains? If they kill all the deer, what will they eat? Keep driving around in your precious’s car that was created from strip mining the land for its iron. Keep on living in your precious house that was built from clear cutting forest. Keep banging away on your computer keys that come from the bowels of the earth in the form of crude oil. Assemblyman Huseo is the one who should resign. How about when he illegally tried to funnel $25,000 in campaign funds to a sibling. Then thousand of dollars of taxpayers to pay his siblings former campaign workers to work in his office. And then he requested $11,000 in tax payer funded bonuses  to several staffers. He was fined $17,000 by the Ethics Commission for raising money for a 2006 election that never took place. You bash Mr. Richards for eating the meat? What was he supposed to do waste it.? Richards is a intelligent and articulate man and not afraid to voice his opinion and belief and stick to them. a trait that seems to be void in our government lately. Whether I agreed with him or not it seems when it comes to his job he makes decisions based on science and considers his opponents views.

Whats amazing is how out of touch people are with nature, mother nature is far more brutal than any hunter , animals suffer and die every day in nature, baby animals ripped apart within hours of being born by predators. Humans are part of nature and predators as well, however I don't know many capable of performing the atrocities performed by other creatures on the planet. The outdoor community has the biggest stake in protecting, restoring, and maintaining wildlife and habitat. They are the one group willing to put their money where their mouth is and their feet on the ground.

All you have to do is go on YouTube to find live footage of mountain lions and countless other species being shot for the camera. It's far worse than this still photo, with flowing blood and squirming death throes. The bow-kills are especially nasty.

YouTube's tolerance of those snuff videos (which clearly violate their terms of use) should be as big a controversy as this. Ethical adults - and impressionable kids - who go online searching for positive info on wildlife can easily stumble onto videos of animals being shot by grinning trailer-trash.

How about writing that up as a story sometime? Many complaints and petitions already exist.

Also, the fact that he ate the mountain lion is a specious technicality, since he clearly killed it for thrills. One wonders if he's lying about the meat aspect, anyhow. It doesn't sound very pleasant and it would take a whole lot of people to finish it off. I bet they dumped most of the meat.

I disapprove of hunting mountain lions. I also disapprove of paying guides to enable incompetent people to go where they don't belong and do what they'd normally be unable to do without help. That's as far as I'll take it. Dan Richards' job is overseeing hunting and fishing in California. To many, these activities are wrong, just as many feel eating meat is wrong. That's a personal moral choice, just as religion is a personal belief. Keep it to yourselves. His letter strikes me as one written by an intelligent, articulate man. I don't know anything more about him. I'm sure there are plenty of things to like and dislike about him but I'm not picking up this political football. Chill, folks.
