Pomona College Caught in 'Wave of Anti-Immigrant Hysteria,' Says Professor

Politics in paradise.
The illegal-immigration debate is on fire at Pomona College in far-east L.A. County.

"You'd think that if any place was going to be a safe haven for immigrants, it would be at colleges and universities," says Peter Dreier, a professor at Occidental College in L.A. proper. "But that doesn't seem to be the case at Pomona College. They've joined in that wave of anti-immigrant hysteria."

Dreier serves as a talking head in a new mini-documentary about the controversy produced by labor union Unite Here Local 11...

... which represents workers at Pomona. Here's why the union is so angry, from its original news release in early December:

Unprovoked by any federal agency, Pomona College fired today 16 dining hall workers who did not re-verify their eligibility to work. Several of those terminated had worked at Pomona College for 10 to 20 years.

The union's suspicion is that, when the Pomona College Board of Trustees issued a letter to dozens of employees in November demanding that they show proof of citizenship, the board was trying to drown out a larger protest for better wages.

"The decision came in the midst of a union drive that has been opposed by the administration," says a union narrator in the video. And, perhaps to rope Occupy Wall Street into the fight, the union also points out that Pomona College's board is "led by Goldman Sachs executive Paul Efron" -- who's pretty much as 1-percent as they come.

The college's president, David W. Oxtoby, tells The New York Times a different story.

Dr. Oxtoby said the board of trustees received a "specific, credible complaint" from an employee in early 2011 about the college's hiring policies and moved to investigate the accusations.

For months, officials said, lawyers from the law firm Sidley Austin combed through the university's records and met with administrators. By the time the investigation was complete, the law firm had identified deficiencies in the files of 84 employees, including dining hall and maintenance workers as well as professors and students working for the college. Each employee received the same letter asking for documents to re-verify their work status. Of the 17 employees who ultimately lost their jobs, 16 were dining hall workers.

The second craziest thing that's ever happened at Pomona.
Hard to believe that the administration was so blissfully unaware of its workers' status for the last decade-plus, but so go the "Don't ask, don't tell" hiring practices enjoyed by so many California employers (who then feign shock upon the big REVEAL).

U.S. Congresswoman Judy Chu jumps to the front lines of the union side, saying the fired workers "put their sweat, blood and tears into this college, and they deserve better."

But now that the ex-employees are known to be undocumented, the debate boils down to a more age-old one: Amnesty, or Sheriff Joe-style border policing?

According to the Times, that nasty debate has spread far outside admin-union negotiations:

The renewed discussion over immigration and low-wage workers has animated class discussions, late-night dorm conversations and furious back and forth on alumni e-mail lists. Some alumni are now refusing to donate to the college, while some students are considering discouraging prospective freshmen from enrolling.

Looks like some sheltered kids at a private school in manicured Claremont might actually get an education after all.

Most (if not all) of the fired workers were either hired by ARAMARK or Sodexos, companies the college had previously contracted dining services out to but had stopped using their services in 2001 (ARAMARK) and 2011 (Sodexos), so it's actually quite plausible that the college was unaware of these workers' immigration statuses.

When I attended the Claremont Colleges in the 1960's, no one cared whether the "help" was legal.  The schools did whatever one else did, they paid them low wages.

After graduation, I worked and lived in Claremont by by the railroad tracks. The 7 or 8 guys who lived in  the front house on the lot were all illegal, and we were all glad to have them in town.  [My family came to New Amsterdam in 1654 and were promptly thrown in jail. So we have a few century experience with immigration, legal and Illegal.]

For decades Californians had an unspoken deal. "We know you are illegal and that you will work for substandard wages and do an above-standard job."  It is a win-win situation as it is classic free enterprise and no one was forced to do anything against their will. . until the racists idiots showed up . . .  .

Rick let me be the first to congratulate you; as you seem to know what color illegal aliens are as well as what race they are from.  Not being a racist myself, I can’t tell what color or race they are.  When the racist showed out, can you please tell what color the illegal aliens were?  Illegal labor is wrong.  Maybe you support slavery or child labor since you can turn a blind eye to this unspoken deal.

The school had no problems  keeping the workers when they made $8 an hour, but when they try to unionize they were fired.  This is union busting.  Scare all the workers and keep them at low pay with no rights. This is not just an immigrant issue, it is a class issue.  Those with the money are once again keeping the workers down.

How about a little personal responsibility from the workers?  Those workers were keeping themselves down.  I guess choosing to not following immigration laws and forfeiting the protections it affords is the fault of the school administrators also.  I am fairly sure working without legal permission is a felony.  Every employer tries to get the best labor for the least cost, that’s basic business.  The difference is the workers entered into their employment agreement knowingly violating the law.  We can only speculate that the college knew.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT APERSONS RACE, NATIONALITY OR IMMIGRATION STATUS, THIS IS STRICTLY ABOUT THERIGHTS OF US BORN CITIZENS, NATURALIZED CITIZENS AND GREEN CARD HOLDERS, WHOHAVE BEEN VIOLATED BY THE POLITICIANS, SPECIAL INTEREST LOBBYISTS, UNIONS, THECHURCH AND RADICAL GROUPS. THESE ENTITIES HAVE HIJACKED WELFARE ENTITLEMENTSFOR FOREIGN NATIONALS NEEDED BY OUR OWN IMPOVERISHED PEOPLE.

THE TWO IMMIGRATIONLAWS UNDER MENTIONED THAT CAN ADD COMMONSENSE TO OUR ENFORCEMENT POLICIES. BOTHLAWS IF PASSED WILL TRANSLATE INTO REPATRIATION OR SELF-DEPORTATION OF ILLEGALALIENS. ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION IS ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION...PERIOD!

1. DEMAND “THE LEGALWORKFORCE” BILL, BE INTRODUCED BEFORE CONGRESS.

Mandatory E-Verify will inflict fear into every businessthat hires illegal labor. Simple and straightforward that anybody businessowner caught after the nationwide implementation will face strict penalties, that includes huge fines, asset confiscation and prison. Whereas PresidentObama has been shown currently of weakening ICE raids on companies, who use elicitworkers. Mitt Romney is right—that once the job market for illegal job seekers, dries up thousands will leave. This is ATTRITION through Enforcement, withlittle or no dollars spent, with the deciding factor that has a right to work. The electronic Social Security program hooked onto Homeland Security data baseswill reject unauthorized labor. As an addition a special monetary reward fundfor informants or “Whistle Blowers” who report suspicious activity on companypayrolls. Use hundreds of millions of dollars in fines, to recruit more agentsfor our undermanned border and begin the construction of former PresidentBush’s “2006 Secure Fence Act” that was dropped by the elites in the RepublicanParty, with assistance of the Democrats. We need the double parallel fencingfrom San Diego, California to Brownsville, Texas.

2. DEMAND “THEBIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP” BILL BE INTRODUCED BEFORE CONGRESS.

An Amendment to the14th Amendment will discard this irrational law, that every babyborn in America has a right to citizenship. The amendment will rescind thislaw, instituting that only a baby born of a legal parent(S), has the status tobecome a citizen. With an estimated 340.000 annual illegal alien Mothers, surging into this nation by misleading the immigration authorities, this mustbe brought to an abrupt stop. Unfortunately the word has spread throughout theworld, that if a Mother of an unborn child can pass agents at entry points, then they can claim the misguided law that says they can award their baby withall the free benefits associated with citizenship. Billions of dollars areappropriated in this way for the whole family. They are very well versed thatfor every child they can birth, there is a cornucopia of cash payments andpublic assistance programs. Under The Birthright Citizenship Bill” we canfinally bring an end to these expensive deficits, laid upon every statetaxpayer.

JUST REMEMBER WHENYOU VOTE--WHO BLOCKED IMPLEMENTATION OF IMMIGRATION LAWS AND REMOVE THEM FROMOFFICE. THAT ALSO GOES FOR GOVERNORS, JUDGES, MAYOR’S, CHIEF OF POLICE AND ANYOTHER ELECTED OFFICIALS. SHOW THEM YOU’RE VOTE COUNTS, AND WE DON’T NEED ANYMORE PRO-ILLEGAL MIGRANT OR IMMIGRANT THAT WE HAVE TO FEED, HOUSE, GIVE FREEMEDICAL TREATMENT, WHEN OUR OWN PEOPLE REMAIN IN POVERTY?

Now with Arizona's positive draconian enforcement policinglaws, illegal aliens are fleeing to the Liberal welcoming arms of Californiaand states that have disregarded the pleading message from their populations. Two main laws must find passage by the “THE PEOPLE’S PARTY, the growing TeaParty, and all Constitutional Conservative Americans are sick and tired ofsupporting people who broke into this country, from every corner of the world. Itis an unrelenting bombardment of dire poverty, which the courts have coercedall of us into paying for other countries desperate and poor. School fees, health care, prison cells and growing list including President Obama's agendaof food stamps for all. They slip past immigration agents at entry points asdisguised tourist with hidden fetuses and immediately apply for their baby’scitizenship. That then allows them to collect all the public assistanceprograms and get free treatments in delivery rooms, leaving the taxpayers tocarry the fees. They steal our Social Security numbers, which in itself is afelony, but under USICS (Immigration & Citizenship Services) thousands havebeen allowed to stay, even though they have used other people's ID. This is nota victimless crime, as unknown numbers of ordinary Americans have had theircredit crippled, by this serious violation.

I hope that California residents realize there being cheated out of billions ofdollars annually? Just ask Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Andronovichof not just millions, but billions of dollars annually being collected byforeign nationals. No wonder Los Angeles County has to folk out $48.000.000dollars in just the month of June 2009. Is there any record of what the costwould be currently, with the deluge already here and the 500.000 estimate thatappear each year looking for their free handouts?  Risk a few minutes of your time and find theWebsite “American Patrol”, and investigate the news that is suppressed by themajority Liberal Press. Also scan through NUMBERSUSA website and see thegrading system for Romney, Gingrich, Santorum and Paul and their stance onenforcement of immigration laws? Call your US Senator or House Representativetoday or even contact your State equivalent, and insist they sponsor E-Verifyand the Birthright citizenship bills and be prepared for indifference. Keepharassing them or otherwise, we will keep hemorrhaging billions of dollars. Thefuture of a Constitutional America is in your hands, not the route ofSocialized medicine and the different agenda of President Obama and his Liberalprogressive Czars in Washington.

Mexicans, GO BACK TO MEXICO! You are Not welcomed in Los Angeles!

First of all, it doesn't say anything about them being Mexican. Second, at least learn how to properly speak and write in English if you're going to be spewing random crap. Not only is your capitalization is all wrong, you can't even use verbs correctly. Weirdo.

With a last name like "Khan" I'm shocked you have the audacity to spew anti-immigrant hate when I can be fairly certain your ancestors were once immigrants.

This is not a nation of Immigrants. This U.S. is a SOVEREIGN NATION, of 310,000,000 CITIZENS. We are not a race, ethnicity and definately not Immigrants. We are AMERICANS. We do not refer to Mexican nationals, as immigrants. We call them what they are, Mexicans, citizens of the nation called Mexico. This Anti-American bigotry, to continue to deny Americans the same rights as the rest of the world, the right to their homeland, the U.S., is pure discrimination. When you refer to American citizens, as immigrants, you are saying, they have no nation. If Alexander Khan, is an American, he is not an immigrant. He is a CITIZEN of a SOVEREIGN NATION, called the United States of America. Stop your Anti-American bigoted hatred.
