UCLA Graffiti Calls Out Latina Students: Police Are Looking for Idiots and Treating Case as Hate Crime

UCLA students living near campus were targeted with anti-Latino graffiti this week, prompting university police to launch a hate-crime investigation, according to reports.

The UCLA Daily Bruin says the graffiti on an apartment door, stairs and a nearby fence have messages such as, "you rude ignorant spic cunts" and "dirty Meximelt bitches." Nothing, apparently, was stated about the old-school Enchirito and the perfectly chaste women who love it, leading investigators to believe the culprits were both young and dumb.

Mention of other Mexican dishes favored by foodies were absent as well, so we now know these are not high-class haters. Irony?

In any case, Kristine Phan was the first of the apartment's dwellers to notice the messages Monday morning. She's not Latina. (Again, a clue as to the IQ of the culprits).

She told CBS Los Angeles:

Our institution, it's of its diversity and all the people who come here. We have exchange students who come here from all over the world and it's upsetting that this is going on.

It appears her roommates, including Myra Ramirez, who is reportedly of Guatemalan-Salvadoran heritage and who grew up in South L.A., were targeted.

Again, her background doesn't necessarily suggest a Meximelt diet (though a Malibu surfer's does -- discuss). The culprits were foiled again.

Alas, another roommate was reported by the Bruin to be Mexican or, perhaps, Mexican American.

Score one for the 'tards.

The Bruin says the Undergraduate Students Association Council condemned the artistes and will discuss the situation with administrators.

If the perps are caught they should be made to actually go to school to learn the differences between Asian Americans, Latinos of Central American descent and fast food with Inland Empire roots.

You spent the entire article berating the offenders for their ignorance in executing their racially insensitive acts by using irony as your primary method of criticism. But what I found the most ironic is that you go so far as calling them "'tards", which itself is an insensitive euphemism for individuals with mental handicaps. The motivations for the act you reported on were ignorance, anger, and insensitivity. It looks like you, as well as the offenders, need to learn a thing or two about what one should or should not say in castigating another person--in your case, about how to channel one's anger in a critically constructive way that doesn't perpetuate the same vices you're criticizing, e.g., ignorance of whom you might be offending when using certain words.

The only thing more disgusting than the graffiti is Dennis Romero's attempt at humor while reporting it. What ever happened to professionalism?

maybe you should read Daniel's remark down below.  Let me tell you why the students did that.  Because there is a double standard for illegals and for anchor babies.  They are taking away jobs and they are taking away students from attending UCLA...NATIVE CALIFORNIANS and their PARENTS who have been paying taxes for 3, 4 and 5 generations.,  It's okay to defend people who are illegals or children of illegals.  And you probably think it's okay for illegals to drive around without insurance because they are part of the raza.

But then you show your true colors with the 'tard comment.  You, Dennis, are the racist.

Where in the article does it state that the students targeted were "illegal"?

What jobs are they taking away exactly? Is there a specific study where you're getting your information from that states that Latinos (or immigrants in general, because believe it or not there is more than one nationality that emigrates to America) take away jobs coveted by other citizens? Are these jobs you're talking about those in the field, picking your fruits and vegetables? There are plenty of jobs on the field I'm sure they are not taking all of those spots. What does being part of the "raza" have anything to do with driving with no insurance? You are stereotyping "illegals" as latino and they are  not synonymous.  It's people like these students, and yourself, that throw out names and claims with no proof or validity. These students generalized and decided to degrade themselves to name calling. Educate yourself on the demographics of immigrants and their job status before you throw out stones

For the record, I staunchly don't agree with any of the views in US Times' comment or the way they are presented. Personally, I find the term "anchor babies" dehumanizing and offensive. Also, by using the pejorative term "'tard" Dennis was not being insensitive to a race. Those to whom the term is insulting, namely, those with mental disabilities, do not constitute a race. This is not a ground, therefore, to call him a racist. I share Dennis' anger and disappointment over what happened. What I don't agree with is retaliatory name calling that's offensive to a general population of people (again, not any general population of people constitutes a race).
