Boycott The Lots: The Dodger Fan's Guide To Avoiding Frank McCourt

Dodger Stadium
Thousands of Dodger fans boycotted the team last year out of disgust with Frank McCourt. Now that McCourt has sold the team for $2 billion to an investor group led by Magic Johnson, those fans are celebrating.

But there's a rat in the punchbowl: Frank McCourt will partner with Johnson's group to own and develop the parking lots. He's not going away.

What should Dodger fans do, if they still want to express their disapproval of McCourt?

Easy: Boycott the lots.

Dodger fans can show their love for Magic and the Dodgers by attending the games. But they can also vent their disdain for Frank McCourt by walking, biking, taking a cab, getting dropped off, or taking public transportation. Anything to avoid spending $15 on a parking space.

Imagine a full stadium and an empty parking lot on Opening Day. That would send a message.

How do you do it?

Dodger Shuttle. The easiest way is to take the Dodger Stadium Express bus from Union Station. The shuttle is free if you show your Dodgers ticket. Fans can park at Union Station for $10, or they can use any of the other park-and-ride lots on the Metro system (marked with a "P" on this map) and take the train to Union Station.

Coming from the Valley? Park at the North Hollywood Red Line station. Coming from the San Gabriel Valley? Park at Sierra Madre Villa. From the Westside? Park at the La Cienega Expo Line station, once it opens on April 28.

Fans can also get to Union Station by bus, Metrolink and Amtrak.

Last year, 116,000 fans used the express bus to Dodger games (or about 1,400 per game). Express buses leave Union Station every 10 minutes, starting 90 minutes before the game, and they drop fans off right outside the stadium entrance.

Bike. As Streetsblog demonstrated a few years back, they don't make it easy to bike to the games. There is only one bike rack, and it is well hidden. But if more people started bicycling to games, the Dodgers would have to respond.

Walk: When Frank McCourt jacked up the parking fee a few years ago, a lot of fans opted to park in the surrounding neighborhoods and walk into the stadium. This is not good fan behavior. The people who live in the neighborhoods don't appreciate it. But if you do live in the area, it is possible to walk to the games. The Dodgers could make it easier by providing more and better sidewalks.

Any means necessary. Get a friend to drop you off. Hail a cab. Stick out your thumb. Just don't park in the lots.

Would this actually hurt Frank McCourt financially? No. McCourt is on his way to being a billionaire. Nothing can hurt him financially. But it would send a message that he is still unwelcome.

Many -- perhaps most -- Dodger fans may feel that the message has been sent, and that it's not worth going to all this trouble to keep sending it. That's a valid point of view. But for those holdouts who still want nothing to do with McCourt, there is an option.

How incredibly irresponsible, Mr.Maddaus.  Did you do any research (investigation) into the streets surrounding the stadium?  How we residents cannot find parking in front of our own homes on game days?  On the west side, there's no way our streets wouldn't be permitted but being a poorer neighborhood, the city seems not to care about us.  Please don't encourage any more non-residents to park on our streets.

Not a bad idea on taking alternate transportation to Dodger Stadium.  Why turn your nose up at saving an extra 15$?  I wouldn't.  I think it's great Magic Johnson is now involved with running Dodger Stadium and the Dodger franchise.  Not so happy about McVampire still lurking about, but his role should be tiny, So I don't think it'll be that much of a bother as long as he keeps his face out of public view.  Things should be back to relatively normal after a while.

As for McVampire, I see him coming to a bad end sometime in the future because karma has to take a much bigger bite out of his backside.  It won't happen soon, it may take several years, but his luck will eventually run out and he'll fall.  He has to at some point.

Here is a great option:   We need to place a Citizen Sponsored Measure on the Los Angeles city ballot that will prevent any development of the parking lots, i.e. shops, restaurants, condos, hotels   TakeBacktheParkingLots.com   We are a grass roots organization dedicated to removing Frank McCourt or his "affiliated companies" from any ownership percentage in the parking lots.   The land belonged to the city and was given to the Dodgers to be used "for a public purpose" - NOT Frank McCourt's personal real estate development.    We need your help to get this measure on the Los Angeles city ballot, just like the original 1958 proposition B that OK'd giving the land to the Dodgers.

I'm just not seeing slime bag coming out a billionaire. Since he put up about 99 cents of his own money in the first place and chiseled out hundreds of millions in equity to finance his super-pimp lifestyle, how is he NOT up to his oily grifter eyeballs in debt that has to be paid out of the sale proceeds?

Better still, send a message to the new owners that they've done wrong by the fans and don't show up for any games in Dodger stadium until mccourt sells the parking lot or the team moves. They could have insisted on the parking lots or no deal. They didn't. Now it is the fans' turn.

*Dodger fans can show their love for Magic and the Dodgers by attending the games. ****Why would we want to show love to Magic when he just sold us out? Secondly, whether you use the lots or not McCourt still gets your money.

If you really want to attend baseball games go to Angels Stadium. AS far as I'm concerned baseball in LA has officially died.

you are such a sell out! You were never a true dodger fan then to begin with! Go right ahead and join the sea of red along with all the other sell outs

I hate McCourt more than anyone, but this article is so wrong. Magic's group has control of the parking lots during the games. McCourt has a minority interest in the parking lots. However, the Dodgers will have to pay to lease the parking lots from the joint venture that now owns the parking lots. So, McCourt and his joint venture get paid for the parking lots regardless if we park there or not. So if the parking lots are empty, the dodgers will have to take the money out of somewhere else to pay for the parking lots.

Efren is right. McCourt's not going anywhere so you might as well get used to him being around. And what's with all the hate toward's Magic. Dodger fans should be glad he's going to be the face of the franchise. I haven't been to a game in two years but when I heard Magic was going to be part owner, I bought mid-April tickets. Time for everyone to get back on board the train.

Zippy Frack

No.  Never get used to McCourt being around.  Will never go to a game as long as he is involved.  And after a 2 billion dollar price tag, the costs of that will continue to be dumped on the returning fans.  The Dodger fans are not winning anything here.

So the only real solution is the one I've made. I'm officially no longer a Dodger fan. 36 years and it's all over, just because of this Scumbag Frank McCourt and his grubby little hands. The new ownership group should have just bought it all out, instead they are still going to deal with this douche.

I stopped being a Dodgers fan as well. And I've been a fan longer than Dodger stadium even existed. But I stopped being a fan because of "other fans".  I could care less about the cost of  a ticket or the parking. However too many Los Angeles residents are now just low class beer swilling thugs. They would rather attend  a gang fight with other fans than even see the privelege of watching a pitcher throw a perfect game. Even if is a pitcher on the opposing team.  Los Angeles has become  a city of third world nation type loosers.

I wonder how long it will be before Frank sues his new business partner Magic?

True enough. It's really a secondary boycott, when you break it all down.

Nice try but most everyone will still use the lots. It just sucks that the Magic-led group couldn't negotiate Frank out of the deal completely.
