Gay Bashing Beat-Down by Club Bouncer in West Hollywood Caught on Video

Updated at the bottom with reaction from the owner of Fubar, where the doorman on the video worked. First posted at 9:01 a.m.

Video of a man being punched by a bouncer near a famed West Hollywood nightclub made the social networking rounds this week. One of his captors appears to utter a homophobic slur at the victim, who tells them he is gay.

The violent take-down and beating of an apparently inebriated man by at least one guy who appears to be a bouncer at Santa Monica Boulevard and North Edinburgh Avenue is reported to have happened Feb. 25.

The location, outside the Laurel Pet Hospital, is fairly barren, but it's across the street from ...

... the famed Voyeur nightclub, a spot frequented by celebrities. It's usually hounded by deputies who set up outside on big nights. Feb. 25 was a Saturday, indicating this was fallout from a Friday night out.

The video was tweeted by Weho Daily last night.

The bald-headed bouncer guy and another man hold down the victim while one of them accuses him of instigating a fight. (Warning: Foul language).

"Look at my face man," the victim says, "-they fucked me up."

One of two men holding him down says: "Fuck your face. I don't give a shit about your face."

Victim: "Trust me please I didn't start the shit. I was with my boyfriend. I'm a gay boy."

Face down on the ground, he tries to look up at his captors. One of them says:

"Yeah well your a fuckin' [unintelligible] ... Stop fuckin' struggling motherfucker. "

At that point the victim receives what appear to be a pair of punches, one to his back and one to the back of his head, by the winner in black.

"Stop resisting," one of the men says. "Stay still motherfucker."

Then one of the captors unleashes this: "Stop fuckin' moving you cocksucker."

Just then a security guard with a badge walks up, and one of the captors says, "Hey can we get some cuffs please."

"Stay where you are motherfucker," the victim is told. "Shut up."

We'll put a call into Voyeur this morning to see if any of these heroes belong to them.

No one has the right to assault you. Police can do what it takes to control you if you disobey their lawful orders. But that applies to police.

Being a bouncer can be a tough gig, as we've surely witnessed. And, in many cases, they do a great job of keeping idiots from ruining a good time. But some of them get tough-guy complexes and need to spend some time in handcuffs themselves.

This seems to be one of those cases. What do you think?

[Update at 12:39 p.m.]: A manager at Voyeur got back to us, saying the bouncer wasn't theirs but rather an employee of Fubar, which is down the block. The manager said that the only role of the venue in the incident was that a sheriff's deputy hired by the club called 911.

"We're definitely involved in the community," the Voyeur manager said. "I don't want to see stuff like that in the news."

The bouncer did not fit the description of any of Voyeur's door staff, the manager said: But he did fit the description of an employee at Fubar. We have a call into that venue.

A sheriff's official, meanwhile, explained to us when and where a bouncer can use force. Basically, they're the same as you and I. They can hold you for cops if you've clearly done something wrong (a citizen's arrest, essentially) and they can defend themselves and others with force. But that's about it. They punch you, you can punch back.

The source says:

Speaking in general terms a bouncer is a citizen, so the rules of engagement as applies to a bouncer are the same as any other citizen. You can be reasonable to protect yourself and you as a citizen can affect an arrest for something that happens in your presence. If a bouncer is pounding on someone, he better have some justification for that. He can be held accountable for his actions both criminally and civilly.

He added that deputies stationed outside night spots are hired by the clubs for special events but have the full power of sworn law enforcement.

There you go. We have a call into the West Hollywood sheriff's brass to determine if this incident is under investigation.

[Update at 2:01 p.m.]: Det. Mike Berbiar of the West Hollywood sheriff's station says the person we've been calling the victim here was the only one arrested:

The man, identified as, Timothy Reyes, is alleged to have assaulted five people inside Fubar that night before he was taken out and taken to the ground.

As Berbiar understands it, the fighting started over a jacket that the suspect thought was his but apparently wasn't. Some of those assaulted included folks such as bar staff who tried to break up the fight, he said.

Reyes was cited on suspicion of battery and public intoxication and released, the detective told us.

The detective wasn't aware of the video or of the action of the bouncer, however, and said he "would definitely be interested in looking into it."

We'll keep you updated.

[Update at 11:54 a.m. Wednesday]: Jay Krymis, owner of Fubar, got back to us this morning. He said, "I was really upset and disturbed by the video."

The doorman, whom he called Brad, was an independent contractor who would not be coming back to work for the venue until they can figure out what happened, Krymis said:

It was not handled appropriately. It seemed a little excessive to me [added] when looking at the video by itself. I'm going to sit down with Brad to find out exactly what happened. We're actively involved in the community and we're the ones fighting against this find of stuff.

However, Krymis alleged, in a story similar to that of the cops,' that the patron allegedly assaulted four people, leaving them bloody, including Brad, a bartender and two other patrons. In one case he allegedly bit the bartender as he tried to escort him out, the owner said.

I don't know if Brad was in the heat of the moment and trying to prevent the guy from creating more damage. He did his job to subdue the guy but maybe he could have done without some of what we saw on video.

He noted that Fubar is a gay bar and that it has a mostly gay staff.

Does anyone know where can I find the video. It has been taken down from YouTube.

Honestly, I believe at this point that gay people should beguin to carrie gangs to protect themselves in their "own territory" - Not only in West Hollywood, but in all places knowing as "Gay areas" across America - This is it! - And The Police?...Oh, they're just fine, Thanks for asking!

this is disgusting, what a pig. The sucurity had no right to use that kind of language or even punch the poor guy for that matter. He was clearly unable to defend himself and i am in shock.im going to start a campaign to help the poor guy if you would like to join and support. This is a dear  friend and a sweet guy.

I don't get it? This guy was maybe all of 5'3" maybe, and he assulted 5 men please?

I would say from my own experience: (situation) "The Abbey" during Pride -Most populat bar in West Holiday during Gay pride week on a sat night, My friend walks in drunk needing assistance-ready to get sick I being pro active ask the bouncer if he could let her in the bathroom next to us where the private party was taking place.

I then go back to my spot to wait for her, and the bouncer makes a scene asking me to step back and that I was trying to get into a private party. REally?! I then am moving to get my drink and again he takes my arm and man handles me (I'm a woman) and tries to escort me out.

I quickly wriggle out and get on top of the small stage with the go go dancer is asking for help b/c he is being aggressively STUPID on a parton ME! Before I knew it the guy behind me yells don't let her in our private party area and throws a drink over my head.

And mind you I was only moving to get my purse when this "knucklhead" Security for the night idiot took me by the arm and pushed me so hard my drink spilled on to another. I knew when I wriggled out of his grasp that this somewhat of a snowball had started to roll, and from there I was taken out by two bouncers, and then dumped on the sidewalked and ridculed by men half my age. I was then handcuffed and threw into a cop car. The cop emptied out my purse on the hood of the car and then asked me what happened. I calmly expressed the situation and offered to call my drunk friend but insisted that would be a waste of time. He released me and told me to go home!

NOw my point of sharing this story is this: tis' loud in a club, he probably started to leave and picked up what he thought was his jacket, somoene shouted, he got pushed by a bouncer, then moved away, all while saying what was wrong but no one listened, then he gets more pushed and pulled while the bar tender is probably throwing his opinion in, and meanwhile it's proabably another guy altogether he is referring to but since bouncers have a guy in their grasp he goes along and says yea that's him.

And all of this b/c it's loud, no one tries to handle it with words, and most of all no one stands up and says I saw what happened and it wasn't that guy who did all what they are saying he did. When you are suddenly picked up by two bouncers, told you are leaving, and your belongings and people are inside and you are insanely accsued of something outrageous you simply go crazy with "why is this happening and why is no one listening to me!" And again most everyone believes whatever was said in the bar and that's it! It is "allegedly accused of" is how they report on the news, but since this is a club everyone must be right? Including the bouncers???? Not!!!

Word of mouth will just hurt the bar, like "The Abbey" will are about my story... not! But hey this guy will be heard either way, since someone was nice enough to film it! And shame on you for someone saying why did'nt they get involved, they did by filming!

A man is face down on the sidewalk -NOT RESISTING - and Mr. Wannabe Fullerton cop wails on the back of the guy's head while screaming, "stop resisting" - Time for the fake pretend washout play cop to get booked for 242.

As a bouncer I would have to say I thought the guy was acting very appropriately. It ain't easy trying to cuff a guy even if he is on the ground if he pulling away his arms or tensing up. I prefer to pepper spray the s#$& out of them first then cuff them while they gagging. All in all tho handled pretty well by the door guy.

Jcollings
Jcollings

I post a lot of police brutality videos when I see them because I hate when law enforcement oversteps its boundaries.  But I don't see a clear abuse in this video as long as there was some real merit for trying to detain him in the first place. The guy on the ground was resisting to the degree that the bouncer was having difficulty getting the handcuffs on.  The bouncer got frustrated and lashed out.  IMO, the hits were not that powerful and you don't even see the guy on the ground flinch.  Could the bouncer of handled it better? Probably. Let's save our disgust and condemnation for the real acts of abuse that occur all to frequently.

Darrella
Darrella

As I said in an earlier comment, takedowns are usually not pretty.  They can, in fact, sometimes look brutal.  But when the perp is crazy enough to do what he has already done and is putting public safety in jeopardy, he is capable of doing a lot more damage.  He has to be stopped.  The guard or police officer has to err on the side of safety.  A lot of what I have seen that was called police brutality I would call "doing his job" and keeping us all more safe.

Darrella
Darrella

I've read all the comments here and I am still in support of the bouncer.  I'm actually very grateful for him.  Reyes is the bad guy and I'm afraid he may get a pass here as the victim.  Pictures of Reyes need to be publicly posted so we all know to stay away from him.

Darrella
Darrella

The bouncer should get a total pass on using the word "cocksucker".  When someone uses the term "motherfucker" they aren't suggesting that anyone actually have intercourse with their mother.  Save the outrage on things that really matter.  So far, I'm on the side of the bouncer.  I was assaulted in a public place once by someone like Reyes and I was so glad to have had a guy like this bouncer to stop him.  Take-downs are usually not pretty and it amazes me how often the "good guy" in the scenario becomes the villain, and the "bad guy" get the sympathy.  If Reyes was crazy enough to do all that he did at Fubar, what might he have done somewhere else had the bouncer not gone out of his way to stop him?  Based on what I know so far, I hope Jay Krymis (owner of Fubar) not only keeps this bouncer, but gives him a bonus.

When did the LA Weekly become Fox News?  Sensationalized headlines?  What are the complete details of the incident from the West Hollywood Sheriff? The devil is in the details, not the search word tags.   News doesn't wait til people get their stories straight?  Apprently 5 gay men were assaulted inside the venue.  You caught the video of someone being apprehended for a violent action towards people he was protecting in the LGBT community.  Then you use Tags like gay bashing, and Voyeur - who apparently has nothing to do with the story, to create legs for this piece.  Are there police reports from the 5 gay men who were attacked by Reyes?  What's up next for the complete story, or did the hits and tag lines do the trick for traffic to your piece?  Award winning articles in the LA Weekly that were thorough and well informed is the reputation of the publication, what happened?

Darrella

Other than the jab at Fox News I agree.  I want to know more about those five guys who were assaulted at Fubar.  How are they and what is their story?

Avory Moore

Nice title but this is all twisted is someone does a Mike Tyson then turns around and punches 4 other people in the face, do you really expect to be held gently until the police come? Yeah I'll admit there was probably an adrenalin rush considered where Fubar is compared to where the guy was actually apprehended is about 2/3 of a block away.. but did anyone consider the fact that if he is "HIV positive" the biting could actually be considered assault with a deadly weapon.. we won't even think if he passed the virus to the employee who he bite..the can anyone say "Murder?"

Cookie4wookie
Cookie4wookie

It's highly unlikely that HIV could be transmitted through biting and if the allegations are true, then he should've been held at Fubar until law enforcement officers arrived.

This video only shows one side.  Reyes punched people in the face, bit the ear of the bartender, and then punched that bouncer in the face as he was exiting the club.  The idea that the bouncer is homophobic or a gay basher and yet works at a gay club is absolutely asinine. People should know all the facts before they post or blog about a situation.

Dennis Romero

I let the facts roll in as they may, and you can see all the updates above. But news doesn't wait for people to get their stories straight.

Jibi2632
Jibi2632

Get what story straight?  You were saying that the bouncer wasn't justified in how he was subduing Reyes.  The fact is that Reyes assaulted that bouncer first; Reyes sucker punched the guy.  I suppose you think the bouncer should have politely asked Reyes to turn himself over to the police for the several assaults he committed just moments prior.  Would that have been more practical?

Who cares about facts?  You jumped to a conclusion so why can't we all jump to conclusions? You assuming he's straight and homophobic is just as likely as me (hypothetically for the case of argument) no different than my assumption of him being gay.

Maybe he's an asexual transgender.  That would get some sensationalistic attention.

"Tags: Gay Bashing, Homophobic" Let me tell you something Mr. Romero - You are a friggin idiot!!! The bouncer said "cocksucker" so now you are trying to twist this into a hate crime?

You are messing it up for the victims of true hate crimes and homophobia. Your moronic dribble is akin to someone like Al Sharpton. After a while, your own people wont support you.

The title of this load of rubbish is "Gay Bashing Beat-Down By Club Bouncer in West Hollywood caught on video..." -- YOU have no idea what happened inside that bar.  So how is it that you can post this drivel without any context or evidence of your claim that the bouncer is a "gay basher"?  You're a disgrace to writers.

"You're judging this on tags?"  I totally get it Dennis, it's madness to think that the editor of a local weekly would deign to waste his valuable time evaluating what tags are linked in an article.

Step aside folks, the paragon of journalistic integrity - Dennis Romero - has entered the building.

The point TRUTH is trying to make lies in sensationalism without merit and accusations of socially touchy subjects with no proof.  "Cocksucker" does not equal gay bashing homophobia.  Especially given the nature of the fact that this bouncer WORKS AT A GAY BAR... lol.  I know the economy is bad, but a gay bashing homophobe working in West Hollywood?

OOO, OOO, while we're jumping to conclusions. I'm going to blow your mind:What if...

I'm not surprised how the bouncer was handling it. That shit happens everyday to anybody, and it bothers me every time they push around someone that doesn't want to cause any trouble.

The bouncer does his job for money and probably hates that he is working in a gay club. He can't wait to feel like a man and beat on a  gay guy. he is a piece of shit. The guy who helped him another one. Amazing that the video caught all this but no one will probably be charged because they will say he was drunk and it's his word against two straight guys.

DasMandrake
DasMandrake

The bouncer doesn't hate working in a gay club and he's not homophobic.  He's actually one of the nicest friggin' guys you'll ever meet.  He wasn't hitting the guy because he's gay; he was hitting the guy because he was acting like a bloody maniac and kept trying to get back up so that he could attack them again.  Brad ended up with a bloody nose, the bartender with a bite on their ear and a few other people (the guy who was helping the bouncer) got roughed up too.  It's very easy to sit back and judge a person who you know nothing about because of a 30 second video that doesn't show everything that happened beforehand.  If you were in the situation, you would have punched that asshole in the back of the head too.

He's ACCUSED of doing this. Doesn't mean he did it. We'll see. But even if he did, there's a difference between self-defense, defending others and controlling a suspect, which the bouncer is legally allowed to do, and assault, battery and retaliation, which he is not.

Dennis Romero

DW: You're a genius yourself. The guy has two men on top of him. At what point in the video do you see struggling? I see him get hit twice after he turns his head to look up and communicate with his captors. I don't equate that with struggling personally. I'm not sure he even had the capacity to "struggle" given the situation.

Just saw the update to the article and I'm glad LA Weekly is taking some responsibility for admitting that the 'victim' was actually the only person arrested. HI, WHAT DID I SAY?

You're all fucking butt hurt that a bouncer actually kept people safe?  Yea, he shouldn't have used the term "cocksucker" but lets get real here, thats a term used on all genders and races and sexual preferences. Plus, when you're THAT FUCKING AGGRAVATED, I feel like he should get some credit for taking care of business. He obviously isn't homophobic or else he wouldn't be working at a Gay Club....

I dont get you people... Did you not read the part where it says the guy assaulted 5 people inside the club, including bar staff before being subdued by the bouncer? If you dont want to catch an ass whippin dont act like an asshole. Easy enough!

And if the bouncer is out of line for calling him a cocksucker then I want the guy charged with a hate crime for each of the 5 people he assaulted if they are straight.

Unreal... Way to defend the criminal!

I'll admit that i find the cocksucker comment of interest.

Saying the term "co*ksucker" to a known gay man while violently attacking him makes you a vile, homophobic monster. Fubar better start explaining...West Hollywood residents now having to endure homophobia? Are you kidding me? I hope every concerned resident takes this matter to City Council and start flooding Fubar with calls. Evil homophobes have no place in Weho. You will be called out. and to you bouncers, just because you failed at life and couldn't be a cop and were a former bully in elementary school does not mean you are anyone of importance. You're an overpaid joke...and venue prop. Nothing more. Know that.

So if someone is violently attacking me and calling me a p*ssy eater, is there anything behind that?  Is it wrong and vile to accurately call out what someone does sexually?

You need to tone down your rhetoric.  "Evil homophobes have no place in WeHo."  To tell you the truth, evil homopobes have no place anywhere.  Quit trying to make the People's Republic of West Hollywood the only place where it is wrong to treat homosexuals, heterosexuals, or any sexuals for that fact.  When you try to put one group of people (in this case LBGT) ahead of another group of people (sexually correct, straight, whatever you want to call them), you become no better than the bouncer who was allegedly beating up the guy on the sidewalk.  Except instead of using your fists to land blows that physically hurt, you are using words and descriptions to promote one lifestyle as being better than another and deserving of greater/better protection.
