John & Ken's Whitney Houston 'Crack Ho' Remark Inspires L.A. Council to Act

Update at 11:39 p.m: According to Daily News columnist Doug McIntyre the council approved the resolution. First posted at 4:15 p.m.

The rantings of conservative talk show hosts John & Ken and their colleagues at KFI 640 AM have caught the attention of the L.A. City Council, which is considering a resolution decrying the station for its "racist and sexist slurs."

The council is referring to John & Ken calling the late Whitney Houston a "crack ho" and to syndicated talker Rush Limbaugh calling a reproductive rights advocate a "prostitute" on KFI's airwaves.

The body will ...

... take up the resolution tomorrow.

Interestingly, the proposal has been backed by recent archenemies of council President Herb Wesson, who has been accused of helping to carve up new voting districts in a way that punishes folks on the council he doesn't see eye-to-eye with, namely Jan Perry and Bernard Parks.

All are African American, however, and all seem to agree on this one.

The resolution argues that the station has a "long history of racially offensive comments as well as deplorable sexist remarks, particularly towards women and Black, Latino, and Asian communities."

Of course, this being the L.A. City Council that it is, the resolution wouldn't actually do anything concrete. It would just make headlines (see above). This is so like the body: all bark, no bite.

In any case, a statement on the resolution sent to us by the Black Media Coalition says that feminist attorney Gloria Allred and former KFI host John Ziegler are on-board with this.

The resolution calls on the station to check its hosts' language and to diversify its staff.

We'll make a far out prediction and say it will pass unanimously.

Let me begin by saying that I think what they said about Whitney was very uncalled for, and extremely rude to her family, and friends. This however is absolutely ridiculous. At the end of the day it is freedom of speech. People should be allowed to say whatever they want. That is their right. If you do not like what they are saying then do not listen to them. Do not support them. Just because you are angered from what they are saying does not mean you have a right to tell them to stop. Simply do not turn on their channel and move on. I think it is absolutely ridiculous how our city council cannot act like mature adults in this matter. That is the main problem with our country. We feel like we have to protect people when at the end of the day those people simply have to never tune into that channel again, and they would never be offended again.

Oh yeah, Ziegler is nothing but a FRAUD himself no matter what he says about JnK. Not only that but he's a bitter ex employee who is still, after all this time crying like a little baby about being put in a closet at the end of his tenure at KFI. So any chance to come down on KFI or John and Ken, he jumps at it! Don't believe him!

This is all a bunch of crap. The L.A. City council is a joke!! It's a council overseeing a cesspool of a city. KFI and The John and Ken Show still are rated number ONE in the latest arbitrin ratings for Febuary which means that still over 750,000 people listen everyday!!!! Which also means that there is a lot of people who agree with what they say!!!

The L.A. City Council can take their "resolution" and stick it where the sun don't shine!!!!!!

when we target what hurts them the most their advertisers that keep on supporting them and also keep speaking out against anything offensive said against any clear offensive thing that anyone from any of their radio stations say. its time that we REALLY REALLY pay attention to what right wing hate radio says over the airways because clearly they have people listening. We already lost one person because of it. The MURDERER of a teen in FL might never be convicted because of a right wing FL law that might protect him as a shooter of this young man. we need to wake up the war against our rights as human beings has already begun.

Jarred, the top of your piece begins with one doozy of a run-on sentence - it makes no coherent sense. As for the point you are trying to make about the impact of conservative talk radio hosts, there is no evidence that the shooter in Florida was a listener. That being said, let's execute him and his whole family.

I know your heart is in the right place but if you actually listen to John and Ken as I do, you will hear that there is no racist speech—only calling out corruption of L.A. City Councilmembers who happen to be African American
